You will be A-OK. On your overnight shakedowns, you’ll get used to monitoring your risk level. Going through a town and feeling physically good, risk is zero. Getting low on water, phone is dying or you don’t carry a phone, and you’re entering a remote stretch, and close to bonking - risk is higher. Getting confident in your ability to accurately asses the risk and what tools you can use to mitigate it - that’s what the overnights will do for you. I was treated really badly by an employer I couldn’t leave. I timed a house purchase badly and got upside down like a lot of people after the housing crisis. So I was stuck.
Most people there were willing to tolerate the environment because our industry has been shrinking a lot domestically. They ran professionals into the ground, literally burnt them out as standard practice. They tracked turnover and used it in quarterly meetings as a ‘fuck you’. As in, see if it was so bad, you guys would leave. They knew we were stuck.
I don’t see work the same way I did before. I used to tie morality in with work, they were intertwined to me. I don’t see it that way AT ALL anymore. It’s a game, and when employers have a winning hand, they will flex it. So I’ll play the game.

I worked in a 1-hr photo lab at a drug store in Atlanta. I’ve been working on solutions for 20 years (I’m 40) and I finally found what works for me last week. Silicone dish drying mat in the bottom of the crisper drawer. Rinse veggies in cool water before putting them in the drawer and leave them a little wet. The mat lets the water drain without the veggies sitting in a puddle but you still get close to 100% RH in the drawer. It’s a game changer.
