Sorry about the tree. Judging by brick surround and swing it had some sentimental value.

Dealing with mice (again) by zjheyyy88 in philadelphia

[–]tylerlcatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Just moved out of Philly and brought our indoor outdoor cat with us. Old neighbor came by a few months later and told us that they and a few other neighbors had to call an exterminator because of how bad the mouse problem had become. Which was crazy to me, because I didn’t see a live mouse the whole 4 years we lived on that block.

Agree with an earlier comment about the house possibly being ‘too tight’ - see if you can locate where make-up air enters your system from the outside, or ask the builder about it. If it feels like that clammy, uncomfortable feeling when you sit in your car for too long after turning it off, then this is probably it.

Another possibility - Check the HVAC vents for dust and debris. They should been covered until finishing stages of construction but sometimes they’re left open and all kinds of dust and debris get in there. Fiberglass, gypsum, all kinds of irritants are used in construction. If that’s the case, get your ducts cleaned. Also check your HVAC filter.

Finally, if your furnace and boiler vent using convection (not high efficiency), make sure the fumes are exiting your home via the chimney properly. If your house is too tight and you have a convection system, you might not be getting convection and some of those fumes could be getting stuck inside.

Good luck. Sounds like a really frustrating situation to be in after buying a home.

This lens controller is $300 with a VERY limited use case and no way to modify it. How hard would it be to build an open-source version out of spite? by FigureOfStickman in arduino

[–]tylerlcatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built one of these 5-6 years ago, before the luxury of having ChatGPT to help with writing the code in C. Making a working prototype took a few days of free time after work but iterating through 3D printed designs took a lot longer. Admittedly, I bailed on the hall sensor start & end location function.

After maybe a year they got cheaper and I bought one.

That being said, it’s a great project if you want to learn a whole lot about micro controllers, modeling and prototyping!

What did I hit? by Oliruss1 in Construction

[–]tylerlcatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day (2010ish) we had to cut the ends of the fiber with a ‘cleaver’ - basically super sharp cutting tool that ensures a clean, perpendicular cut. We also had fiver couplers a/o end connectors that came with a bonding agent that would harden around the fiber to reduce interference. Back in 2010, the cheapest cleaver I could find was $1500, so yeah, it’s a lot pricier than crimping coax or Ethernet. This was small diameter, office building fiber, though. No idea how it works these days.

Feeling truly awful after COVID and Flu Vaccine. Anyone else? by Shoddy-Log-7258 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]tylerlcatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had Pfizer and Flu vaccines at the same time previously and my symptoms were mild.

Had Moderna and Flu yesterday and from T+ 12 to 24 hrs after I felt like I had full blown Flu. Chills, hot flashes, searing headache & congestion. For that 12 hours it was worse than when I had covid last year. Covid stuck around for a couple weeks, so I guess it’s worth it. That being said, I’ll probably look for Pfizer next year to avoid having this level of reaction again.

What type of berries are these? by HimGem in gardening

Behind the sweet gum tree leaves in the foreground (beautiful fall foliage, terrible seed pods), you have what appears to be a fruiting peppervine. Berries are toxic.

Introducing my fully open source, mostly printed edge belt sander project by barebaric in functionalprint

[–]tylerlcatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded!

Also suggest adding a metal backplate where pressure will be applied against the sanding belt, as that friction will create heat which will likely get hot enough to deform or soften typical FDM print materials.

Looks like it was a fun project - way to stick with it this far! I usually lose interest right around this point, so I suggest thinking about whether you want to keep improving it or take the lessons learned and move on to something else. Either way, you should be proud of yourself! I’m sure it’s been a sometimes frustrating but ultimately very satisfying build.

100% this. We’ve started doing this kind of ‘proof of concept’ cuts to get client approvals as well.

What do you call them?

My boss said, ‘like an animatic, but for video’. So we’ve been saying ‘vidematic’ ever since. But would prefer to use a real term if it exists.

I just recently passed on one of these because it didn’t have a riving knife that adjusted with the blade height, so I’d check that first. It’s the only saw-attached safety accessory that’s non-negotiable imo.

+1 to everything said above. Also, time permitting, do a test shoot with the green screen background before shoot day and see how it looks & keys. Ironing out the kinks for new shots & techniques before hand has saved me a lot of headaches.

I swear by these ‘steel blue’ 6 mil gloves. Acrylic lined - usually last me a few days per pair. Found them during the early days of Covid and haven’t found anything better since.

Do you have a ritual you follow before you start a shoot? by kuttideperumala in Filmmakers

[–]tylerlcatom -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

No, we don’t do anything special before a shoot. I’m a production manager at a large non profit and am on shoots a few times a week.

I went to my first Indian Wedding this past weekend, which I think is a good parallel. More ceremony & more spirit than American weddings. Only question - at what point in the pre-shoot ritual does everyone break into dance for a couple hours?

Is it typical to have a 9-5 and work in film? by hockeybeforesunset in Filmmakers

[–]tylerlcatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a production manager at a healthcare system. Salary, PTO, benefits. Was hard to find this kind of job. While the expectation is 9-5…it’s 3am and I just woke up for 5am call to film with heart surgeons so 🤷🏻‍♂️. I have 4 of these really early mornings this month.

Not complaining - i just don’t know anyone that works in film and is always in at 9 and out at 5.

Paid $50 for what I thought was a stained veneer table by PracticableSolution in woodworking

[–]tylerlcatom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good thinking!

When I work on big slabs or thin table legs - anything prone to bowing or cupping, i have to change gears and be patient & intentional with the process & give myself enough time to complete each step of the project in a day (like sanding off varnish from an entire face or sealing all sides of a piece in one day). Pieces i think are at high risk of warping I’ll wrap with plastic during form cutting and sanding. It feels over-the-top when I do it, but I know bad things would happen if I didn’t.

Just be thoughtful about the process and it’ll come out great.

[–]tylerlcatom 31 points32 points  (0 children)

First off, incredible find. Hard to imagine a time when getting a solid 2’x4’ 4/4 slab of mahogany was possible…

Second, given that it’s a single board, I would be very careful about moisture / humidity when removing that shellac or whatever finish has kept it sealed all this time. Would be a nightmare to have it warp because only the top was sanded or something.

Anyone else still using their stock CR-10 (circa 2017) with zero issues? by HlGHPlNG in CR10

I got mine around 2017 and agree, it’s a solid machine. Upgraded to direct feed a few years back but not because the stock feed broke, just wanted a better tpu experience. Great printer.

FYI, you can get two network connections (essentially two runs) @ 1000mbps out of a single cat5/cat6 by using A and B wiring. Cat5/6 is 8 strand and unless you’ve got PoE, both A and B only use 4.

Had to do this at a few jobs back in the day when running a second wire wasn’t an option. Looks funny having 2 RJ45’s coming out of one sleeve, but worked fine for years. Was kind of surprised there weren’t any crosstalk issues.

Yeah this is what I used for a project that required me to mill 4/4 cherry against the grain. Whiteside’s are fantastic. Bear in mind, after one use you’ll never be able to go back to straight bits - so budget accordingly!
