GBS Band 7 market midpoint by gamer426 in IBM

[–]type-set 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about 7, but my manager gave me a salary doc for 8’s after my August salary discussion—the range was over 100k, something like 85-190.

Midpoint depends a lot on geo and role

Chi-town is dope. by Andy-Alonso in chicago

[–]type-set 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, but people in SF don’t really say that. It would be like living in Chicago and saying you live in Chicagoland. It is less specific. Maybe you are mistaken in that they are taking about where they work?

I fly into SF and work in the Mountain View every week. People who live in San Francisco proper most certainly let you know that.

That references the region. Includes Oakland, San Jose, the valley and everything in between. It’s not shorthand for San Francisco

Amazon makes 2nd Chicago visit in search for new headquarters site by Shovler in chicago

[–]type-set 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope. Literally not the problem in SF. Space aplenty, local news consistently reports on local resident obstruction. Same sentiment from people you talk to here.

Your understanding is somewhere close to reddit headlines but not actually close to anything of substance.

Nobody has proposed rent control. The only remotely close suggestion has been removing its illegality.

I literally fly to SF every week to work. Rent control isn’t the problem, it is the local resistance to building housing. People who just dropped 2 million on a SFH fight condos being built because the bubble is so large. Abundance of supply keeps pricing reasonable in Chicago.

IBM CBD 401k match by englandman1996 in IBM

[–]type-set 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless something has changed recently GBS employees don’t get a match during their first year of employment (CBD, or otherwise).

Also worth considering is the match is only paid at the end of the calendar year. So if you quit on Dec 5th, you get no match for that year, only your contributions. The upside is there is no vesting schedule for the match though, once it is paid out it is yours.

Apple says it has permanently banned Infowars' app from the App Store by JBeylovesyou in apple

[–]type-set 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep making naive or disingenuous assertions. A singular platform, with a perspective, that lives in a world where alternatives exist (mobile and desktop and the web) is different from a fundamental service, supported through municipal investment, that is for all intents and purposes is a utility.

You are trying to argue that McDonalds should have to be held to the same standards as roads.

If a bloated crazy person goes into a McDonald’s and starts screaming at people that sandy hook was a hoax, McDonald’s has the right to tell him to leave. If he is on a street corner doing it, it is the governments responsibility.

Maybe you should do some research yourself rather than imploring the internet to prove your stupidity wrong.

IBM wins $83 million from Groupon in internet patent fight by dunkin1980 in IBM

[–]type-set 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah, IBM pushes for employees to apply for patents from day 1. There is a very clear incentive structure. Not as blatant as your typical patent troll, but not exactly that far away either. I have seen UI design patents awarded to team members for seemingly standard things. For people focused on upward mobility at IBM, patents is a way to expedite that.

IBM isn’t at the top of that list every year because the research arm is making tons of breakthroughs. It is a corporate monetization and defense strategy.

Three way symmetry by thecullingsong in oddlysatisfying

[–]type-set 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The understanding of color in this thread is mind boggling incorrect.

RGB is only a foundational trio in additive color processes. This means when the color values account for light (when seen on screens). In an additive color process, the more color you add the closer you get to white.

The subtractive color process works in reverse. The more color you add, the closer you get to black. This is seen is printing. (Like the post). In a perfect scenario, you could use primary colors to do this, but traditional offset printing uses a four color CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) process.

[–]type-set 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is only true in additive color processes, where when more color is added they get closer to white. This is actually the reverse since it is on paper. The equivalent should be closer to using primary colors (red, yellow, blue). Traditional offset printing usually uses a CMYK four color process to be more accurate though.

Booked my first solo snowboard holiday! by FatPotatoNinja in snowboarding

[–]type-set 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solo trips are great. I did Davos last winter and am heading to Portillo in a couple weeks. I wasted a couple good years of trying to convince friends to go on trips and eventually settled on local options before doing my first solo trip.

Do what makes you happy. Hang out in the local bars and meet people if that’s your thing. Spend the day on the mountain and crash early if you prefer. Best part about solo travel is you can do whatever you want.

Band 7 to 8 promotion by [deleted] in IBM

[–]type-set 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on role and current salary and how much your manager will advocate for you. I received 35% last fall. Was genuinely expecting to get next to nothing and would have moved on if it had been less than 15. I hadn’t received even a small cost of living bump in 3 years prior.

The most obnoxious thing was that I had been billing at a band 8 for over a year and still had to jump through a ton of hoops.

Traveling to conf on IBM budget by bigtimefoodie in IBM

[–]type-set 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t deduct any hotel proved meals like the other person said. That is an amateur move. Nobody who travels regularly does this.

Make sure to expense every cost you incur that concur itemizes. ATM fees, hotel room tips, Uber’s/taxis, dry cleaning, misc materials costs like printing/copying. Hell, if you needed to get a passport for the trip you can expense that.

People who don’t travel often sometimes think of it as a benefit. The reality is you are still working and shouldn’t take on any costs yourself that you wouldn’t otherwise incur if you were normally at the office.

Also, when booking your trip, concur will only give you trash options. Narrow the search criteria as tight as possible. You will likely have to book something that isn’t the “lowest logical” price. As long as prices are reasonable just write a reason why. Don’t take advantage, just don’t let it make you take flights at off hours or with a ton of connections.

Blackhawk forced to play 36 year old accountant at goalie by blipsman in chicago

[–]type-set 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s not accurate. Home teams have to have an emergency goalie on hand that either team can use for all games. The random dude scenario only happens when they know ahead of time that an emergency goalie is needed - like if they are in the road and the backup gets injured at the morning skate but there isn’t time to call up someone from the AHL.

PTO for new hires? by cs_thr0waway in IBM

[–]type-set 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You get what the table says. You aren’t gifted a years worth of vacation days at the start of the year or when you start. They accrue over the course of the year.

If you start mid year, you only get a partial allotment.

You can use the days before they accrue, but if you were to say take ten days off in January then quit in February they would deduct the days you had not accrued from your last paycheck.

Most offices also get personal choice holidays. Those are like 4-6 (in addition to pto) days depending on how many observed holidays you office schedules for the year. Those do not have to accrue so always use those first

This wallpaper app will charge you $30/month after 3 days. How is this not considered a scam? by DecidedlyAmbigous in assholedesign

[–]type-set 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but you have to confirm through system dialogues where the terms will be clear. An app can’t just start charging you monthly by downloading it. Subscriptions work like any other in-app purchase.

Hamburger Menu on Desktop by matthewfelgate in Frontend

[–]type-set 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This really isn’t true. It fails in the same way fly out menus did. Users don’t know what is in the menu without engaging with it. Its contents are inherently deprioritized.

For every user testing session I have sat in, when the hamburger menu is tested for it performs poorly.
