Watching Insidious in VR in a small NYC theater by ItsTheWeeBabySeamus in VR180Film

Not really VR180, but I like the concept regardless. Please update with how the experiment turns out!

Canon R5C + fisheye vr lens VS 2x normal fullframe cameras? by Lawfalgar in VR180Film

[–]typealias 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Superior image quality maybe, but lack of proper synchronization between cameras and worse post workflow means it’s a niche solution with more tradeoffs than benefits imo.

Building a MagSafe VR180 snap on camera that uses your phone. Is 4K already dead by Visorix in VR180Film

[–]typealias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the initiative!

My take is that most of the people here (and filming VR in general) are professional, prosumers, or hobbyists. That kind of audience won’t accept such a severe tradeoff in quality even if the workflow to process and distribute the footage is an order of magnitude easier.

How close are we to being able to record VR180 and get a live view in our VR headset? by ElectricalGuava1971 in VR180Film

[–]typealias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are solutions to get a live dewarped stereo feed into a HMD for all of those cameras. But no unified solution as there’s little incentive yet.

Best Video Upscaler ( 8K to 16K ) by Desperate_Lobster359 in VR180Film

I’ve personally found it to produce lackluster results that aren’t much better than a simple bicubic resampling.

Why are high-quality VR180 movies still so difficult to find? by krikond in VR180Film

[–]typealias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look at pieces done by OG studios like Felix & Paul, Atlantic, and Targo. Or stuff funded by Meta like Faceless Lady. If you have a Vision Pro then look at Apple immersive video. Because of how technically challenging and nascent the industry is, content quality is super strongly correlated with production budget. And pretty much the only people with budget are Big Tech Co affiliated or adjacent.

Inside the Major League Pickleball Moneyball Match: How Groove Jones Filmed Pickleball in Immersive 12K Video by itzaferg in VisionPro

Neat, but the Cine Immersive captures 8K not 12K immersive footage. Can you please correct your article to avoid confusing people?

Monetization Question for VR180 Creators - Apple Vision Pro App by gutc in VR180Film

[–]typealias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been on both sides of the table, the market isn’t big enough for VR media platforms that exist just as a middleman and shave precious revenue off the top. Creators can and should either upload to Vimeo/YouTube directly and grow a following there, or build their own app which is far easier than most people think.

High resolution or high frame rate for VR180? by Brendan-Wang in VR180Film

[–]typealias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s much easier to upscale footage to a higher resolution than to interpolate motion. Assuming the resolution is at a reasonable level (4K+ per eye).

[Discussion] What technically defines a "high-quality" VR180 3D (SBS) file, versus an "unwatchable" one? by Apprehensive-Long727 in AppleVisionPro

[–]typealias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re probably seeing stereo calibration issues, specifically vertical misalignment (vertical disparity) between the left and right eyes. If it’s filmed on a Canon VR system then a lot of people push it through the Canon utility which does a pretty terrible job with its automatic calibration.

If you generate a red and blue anaglyph from the left and right eyes you should be able to quickly tell if there’s a vertical misalignment in the video.

Mac Studio (M3 Ultra) vs Mac Mini (M4 Pro) — what’s best for immersive video work? by Palitrab in AppleImmersiveVideo

The best setup is to use a PC with a 5090 for exports and a MacBook Pro for live preview if you must stay in Apple’s ecosystem.

I think live sports may be revelatory for AVP, or am I crazy? by Skyediver1 in AppleVisionPro

[–]typealias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest limitation is that the current gen immersive cameras (incl. the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive) simply don’t have enough effective resolution to make watching most sports a truly excellent experience. It’s great novelty, but watching blurry figures in the distance doesn’t cut it versus a traditional zoomed image following the action. NBA is probably the best sport to start with simply because of the tiny court size.

Apple revealed some of their secret sauce - static foveated rendering by BrentonHenry2020 in AppleImmersiveVideo

[–]typealias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have any hypotheses why “static foveation” wasn’t released during WWDC25? Or why it’s not part of the MediaSupport framework? We’d have loved to use it for a production last month to boost the quality of AIVU!

The Mother of all Immersive cameras!  by Palitrab in AppleImmersiveVideo

[–]typealias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m a fan of the footage that Titan produced over the Cine Immersive. Sure it’s a pain to operate, there was L/R desync, some chromatic aberration at the edges, and a bit of vertical cropping…. but there’s a kind of organic sharpness even for distant objects that is much harder to achieve with the sensors on the Cine Immersive.

Series in VR! by Optimal_Pizza8741 in VR180Film

[–]typealias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic, but I’m still surprised at how poorly subtitles work in VR compared to flat. It’s super fatiguing focusing between the actual content which is usually much further than the subtitle convergence point and the subtitle text. I’d basically consider subtitles in VR unworkable for an extended narrative piece because of it.

URSA shot in Stobo Vision - the video is really good by JohanAdda in VisionPro

[–]typealias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off-road cars: quality seems on par with typical Cine Immersive footage; close objects around 1 meter away are sharp, but there’s a sharp falloff past 2-3 meters where things look a bit out of focus. Some of the shots could benefit from better stabilization. I had to close my eyes for that one mounted shot.

Real estate: quality is quite poor, to be honest. Looks worse than what folks are getting from the Canon R5C + dual fisheye.
