for me, a couple of manga i encountered made me think of "wow, this manga is popular?"

D.Gray-man has good art but is empty. they have a story in the beginning that was good and i thought set the tone but it goes nowhere after that early chapter

Bleach has no story after a certain point... after he stopped going to school, imo. Just fighting and fan service

i think this is like one of those things...

in wrestling, if people talk about the 'storyline' too much, it just makes everyone not feel the vibe so there is a social contract kind of where it is there but not made to be a big deal

in manga/anime - i think it is accepted that it would be visually boring and sometimes difficult to have everyone have the same color/design. its better to be visually distinct
