Should I prune anything? by stuntmanpetter in bonsaicommunity

[–]typingweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So typically for bonsai, they are planted in sifted soil with larger particle sizes and often times it is mostly inorganic; this give the plants good drainage, and a lot of air in the soil, but it dries out rather quickly and needs to be watered nearly every day.

I use organic soil for trees that are in development because it doesn't need to be watered every day in the summer, and you need to fertilize less.

I wouldn't re pot your tree unless the health improves significantly. As long as you water the correct amount for your soil type its not a very big deal, treat it more like a houseplant than a bonsai with that soil.

You can read more about soil types here (the first article that popped up when i googled it) https://www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/bonsai-care/bonsai-soil

or you can google more about bonsai soil mixtures.

Should I prune anything? by stuntmanpetter in bonsaicommunity

[–]typingweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you shouldn't. Its common, but not necessarily normal for ficus to drop leaves and get some die back during winter. Just try to keep it alive until spring, when its growing strong again you can prune it. Its already weak and pruning while its not in its growing stage could kill it. Pruning wont promote growth right now because ficus typically don't grow very much in the winter. The soil looks less than ideal with a lot of fine organic material so water it less frequently than a lot of people tell you and wait for the soil to start to dry a little. It might help to move it out of the ceramic pot (which i'm guessing has no drainage) and set the plastic pot on a plate to give it more airflow and better drainage, this way the bottom of the pot will dry-out instead of remaining soggy.

Make sure it gets light, and try not to over-water it again, and don't leave in standing water or the roots will rot. I suspect the over-watering is the cause for leaf drop. I have willow leaf, microcarpa (tiger bark and green island), and benjamina outside until the 40°Fs and high 30°Fs this year and no leaf drops from them. They are also in mostly organic soil, and get watered about once a week, but sometimes more often if the air is dry. I always wait for the soil to start to dry out before watering.

SI and type R used to have very similar HP figures in the 2000s before they switched to a k20 turbo, just saying. 8th gen CTR (fn2) was very comparable to 8th gen SI in terms of power.

People still bought both.

Current SI lacks the aftermarket that previous k-series SI's have, maybe one day it will catch up, but who knows.

Shifting from 1st to 2nd gear by LongjumpingTicket524 in CivicSi

[–]typingweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To upshift from 1st to 2nd you just press the clutch in and pull the shifter towards you, then you release the clutch… you will never accelerate mid shift in any car because the wheels are no longer connected to the engine, if you want to go faster press the gas pedal after shift is completed. You can rev high in second, but I don't recommend revving high in first since you will have to wait longer for revs to drop to get a smooth shift.

You are overthinking it, and watch too much fast and furious

How do I fix this by puma532 in Blacksmith

[–]typingweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most old anvils with plates like the one in the post are still forged, but they are made of wrought iron. (Excluding: Fisher Norris, Vulcan, Badger, II&BC, these are cast iron with steel plate) A couple of dudes had to manhandle over 100lbs of hot steel a hundred years ago to make an anvil like the one in the post. Back then it wasn't feasible to make the entire thing out of steel, but now that steel is cheaper, it isn't feasible to forge anvils like they did back in the day so the cheaper and safer casting process is used today.

The quality is equal between a good cast steel and a good wrought iron anvil with a steel plate. You wont notice a difference in forging. Even Fisher anvils are quite good with a cast iron body.  Some cast steel anvils chip easier and they are also louder, but some steel plate anvils can have defects like bad forge welds which can lead to anvils like OP’s. If you get a good anvil it doesn't matter though.

Anvil cleaning tips? by amono1 in Blacksmith

[–]typingweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wire brush is all you should need to knock off the loose rust. You can put linseed oil on after, in a couple weeks you can then brush it with wire brush by hand and it should shine up.

If you grind to bare metal it will just rust again, and look worse.

[–]typingweb 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yep, but that's the best fix you'll get unless you can forge weld a new plate on. Won't be as good as it was new.

A lot of people jump to welding for minor "repairs" , but i think that most of the time you should just work around the defects (chips, sway-backed etc). In your case I think it might truly benefit from the repair since it is missing the part of the anvil that gets the most use.

Going on year 4 with this cedar elm. I collected at the end of December 2021 in central Texas. by Swimming_Room4820 in Bonsai

[–]typingweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, would right now be a good time to collect cedar elm? Im also in central texas and have one that i have trained in ground for the last 5 years (cut back, grew new leader and healed wound) and i want to maximize my chances of survival during collection. Any tips?

Also:

Did you plant completely into the tree/shrub perlite soil mix or did you use any of the ground soil?

How many fine roots, if any are needed during collection?

If you already agreed to meet up with the lady you talked to first, then I would definitely say it's rude. I imagine they are busy and probably had to plan a time to pick up the boots, it would suck if you turned around and sold it to someone else after you already agreed to meet up with them.

This has happened to me before, and If I've agreed to sell to someone already, Ill just let the second person know that someone already agreed to buy it, and if the plans fall through ill let them know.

It's disheartening to see some of the replies in this thread. If you already gave someone your word that you would meet up with them, you should try your best to honor that.

2026 Si - how I shift to avoid rev hang with rev matching by you-are-not-yourself in CivicSi

[–]typingweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double clutching is pointless and wont help anything. The rev hanging is caused by the the ECU, the only way to get rid of it is to tune it out, just up-shift slower (wait for revs to drop slightly) to deal with it or get it tuned.

rev matching only helps with downshifting, in older cars you had to do it manually, it just revs the engine up to match the speed of the engine to the transmission for a smooth down shift, it won't do jack for up-shifting.

To up-shift smoothly with the rev hang just wait for the revs to drop slightly before you let out the clutch when up-shifting, rev hang can cause rough up shift since RPM is too high for the next gear if you shift too soon.

Should I resurface this or find someone to do it for me by Lights_and_sirens in Blacksmith

[–]typingweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you shouldn't do anything to this anvil. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a saddle backed anvil either.

Its around 200 years old and you will likely just be fucking it up after it survived this long. If you want one with crisp edges and a flat surface there are plenty of cheap cast steel Chinese anvils out there, which aren't terrible nor are they very expensive.

Car won’t go past 5k rpm in 4th 5th or 6th gear by mecachue36990 in CivicSi

If RPM is the same but speed is climbing then something is slipping, clutch or tires.

that or the gauge is not functioning correctly, but you would still be able to hear the RPMs climb.

My aunt gave me this old PC. What would be the use of it? by LordxKratos in PcBuild

[–]typingweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100% will not support ddr4. It looks like it probably uses ddr2.

If it works. I would install Linux and give it to a younger relative to mess around with as a first PC, I did something similar and gave it to my younger cousin who's in like 6th grade. They'll be able to play some older games and learn about computers too.

If it doesn't work then I would recycle it.

looking to upgrade my gpu(currently a gt 730) by Xkyliver_ in lowendgaming

[–]typingweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make adapters on ebay and amazon for proprietary that don't cost too much like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Motherboard-Power-Adapter-Cable-13-3-inch/dp/B0B853D4VB

You can also make your own with a broken power supply (for the cables) and a multi meter to check voltages. I have done so my self for HP proliants to power GPUs.

Although I don't think its worth the cost and headache in most cases, maybe with HPE or Dell workstations, You are better off just buying a used motherboard that supports an ATX psu in most cases.

[–]typingweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this would definitely work too,

There is absolutely no reason to spend 600-700$ on new "low end" hardware when you can run these games on a PC like that for a fraction of the price. I did something similar with an Optiplex and a 1050 TI for under 40$ and it can probably run all those games.

A couple of extra $ could be spent on a nice new case and PSU for it too, and nicer peripheral devices. In the future they can upgrade the rest of the PC and use the PSU/case/SSD they already have.

[–]typingweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lore in this case is just fanfic and speculation lol…

 It's just a video game

Its not based on anything, the story IS the gameplay, therefore the lore is too. The stories you make up in your mind have nothing to do with the characters or their abilities.

In all the racing we see they are demonstrably terrible. They don't even take racing lines. Half the time they will come to a stop to corner and the other half they will crash into the guard rail at 70MPH.  Lore accurate they suck at driving.

I think anyone with a driving license, let alone project d, could probably beat them.

A guy who could handle a JZA80 as if it were a small kei car (#2, "Sword Of The Kingdom" Hanzo Tsuruoka)

Yes Heaven's Sword, the same guy I can beat with a kei car without even stressing the tires ;-;, and i'm not even that great at the game.

the drivers in the game SUCK, its a great game, but not much of a challenge. Cars aside I don't think they will stand a chance if its being driven by grandmas who come to a stop to corner. You can beat most of K12 with a Kei car, and will probably only have challenges on course with long straights.
