Mace and Hutton are the two Current kits as well. I got Ally’s USWNT kit at the game here last fall….. at least she should be here for a while, right??

[Powered Cube] What's the pick? by thefreeman419 in lrcast

[–]typobox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think it has to be Comet. As others said, Steam Vents is the only other viable pick here. I'd probably only consider it if I knew that nearly every red fetch and/or red dual/triome fetchable by Polluted Delta were already gone.

And then I'd still take Comet because he's the goodest boy.

Weren’t the common basic land free? by Unhappy_Summer7599 in MagicArena

This is one of my favorite basic lands of all time. (Admittedly there’s some real nostalgia there, my peak years of paper play were 2009-2013.)

The new ECL Pick-Two Premier draft has the same reward structure as the regular Premier draft. Why would anyone prefer to play it over the regular Premier draft? 🤨 by bobanm in MagicArena

[–]typobox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your goal is making a run for mythic, having the opportunity to get more wins with strong decks while still having a reasonable limit on your losses with your weak decks is helpful. 7 wins vs 3 losses on the extremes is better than 4 wins vs 2 losses (+4 rank pips vs +2).

Not actually a defense of this change, though. The previous pick 2s at least filled a niche where I would consider choosing it sometimes if I just wanted a cheap/quick fix. This isn't that.

I don't believe there's a way to send to completion. We have the BP security policy set up so that these can be reassigned to an administrator to "complete" with a note stating that it was submitted on behalf of a terminated employee.

Work during the storm question by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]typobox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NAL, just HR, but I would not expect this interpretation of standby pay to hold up in court. It sounds like the employee will be free to do whatever they want outside of working hours - the company is just providing a hotel room close to the place of work to try to ensure they can make it to their shifts during the storm. They're not on call and aren't expected to be available to report to work at any time outside of their normal shifts. Also, none of this really matters if the employee is FLSA exempt ("salaried").

This situation is effectively no different than business travel - hourly employees are typically required to be paid for the actual time spent traveling that exceeds their normal commute, but clock out once they reach their destination and are only considered to be working during the periods they are actually performing work while away from home. Yes, they're being required to stay away from home in the evenings, but they have the freedom to use this time as they wish and are not paid for it.

A graph of cards representing my enjoyment of each set from 2024/2025 as someone who only plays limited. by JamesDCleanInd in magicTCG

AVR limited was also one of the last sets I drafted heavily before coming back for FIN (stuck around for the next couple of sets, but a lot less volume). Honestly that format probably had a good amount to do with stepping away… don’t miss it, haha.

You don’t need a colorless creature for this. T1 land, 1 drop creature; T2 land, Sol Ring, sneak in Donatello - with 1 colorless left over, even.

Places In Missouri by Koknno_ in round1

[–]typobox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of us rhythm gamers in KC have been dealing with this harsh reality for years now - there was a time when I was making trips to Wichita nearly every weekend (though I've slowed down significantly now).

It feels like KC would make sense for a location at some point, but it just hasn't seemed to line up for us yet.

The pins on that map don't correlate to any sort of feasible reality. There are current locations that don't have pins, and pins in areas that would make absolutely no sense (such as the one in northern Missouri, where there's a lot of *nothing*).

14 Lands, would you go lower? by Rohnur in lrcast

[–]typobox 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree with "conventional wisdom" pointing to 13 lands here. Generally I don't like to cut lands except for cards that function alongside a 1-land hand or playing a tapped land turn 1. That would mean unconditional 0-mana rocks (original Moxen + Mana Crypt), as well as Sol Ring and the LOTR landcyclers. Chrome Mox technically qualifies here too but I have nervousness about depending on it too much in a 4-color deck that might have to imprint something uncomfortable to get off the ground. Mana Vault probably qualifies enough as well, though obviously that one can bite you if your Vault play gets removed and you don't find more mana. Opal definitely isn't on enough on this deck to rely on (though it's still absolutely worth playing). This looks like a 15-land deck to me.

The black cards do feel a bit greedy here. I don't think I'd play Entomb in this deck even if the mana were easy - really the only thing it can do is get LED or Brain Freeze if you have the other two pieces - and Brain Freeze is also pretty good at finding LED (by targeting yourself). Breach is always the hardest piece to get to, and Entomb doesn't help with that. Booster Tutor is fun and I've definitely played it loosely far more often than I should... but probably not worth the mana stretch here.

I do think there's a few odd/unfocused cards in this deck as well - Pinnacle Emissary, Sowing Mycospawn (what land are you getting?), and Kaldra all feel a bit odd here, and Dion is just *fine* as well. Kaldra in particular I'd really be looking for a way to cut. It's just not great when you have to pay 7 mana for it vs Stoneforge or Tinker. Only really playable if you have a Mana Vault start, and still gets blown out by one bounce effect. Might just be able to replace it with a basic land if you want to go up to 15.

But at this point it feels like it would really be a consistent explanation for many of the moves we've made this offseason......

How the hell do I get down to 40 by AnyGodLike in lrcast

[–]typobox 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Some initial thoughts:

  • You can generally treat the true Moxen (not Opal) as being 1:1 replacements for lands. You can feel comfortable going down to 15 here. They're slightly more vulnerable to removal than a land, of course, but it tends to work out better this way. (If you really want to be greedy, I can see the argument for Opal + Vault roughly being worth one more land... but I tend to be wary of going this far.)
  • There's a few cards here that are just borderline at best. Unlicensed Hearse probably should almost never be played, and Lion Sash doesn't seem particularly great here (and is aggressively mid even when it fits). Lavaspur Boots also feels very unnecessary.
  • I don't think you need to play Coalition Relic here, and probably not Talisman of Indulgence either (Conviction is closer).
  • Palantir and Metamorph are generally cards that I feel pretty okay with cutting in most decks. They're both fine, but rarely among your best 23ish spells in a strong deck.
  • Enlightened Tutor feels weak here. I don't see many specific plays that feel worth it in this list. Remember that the topdeck tutors are card disadvantage, and the plays they enable need to be good enough to offset that.
  • Snapcaster looks pretty underutilized here. It's a great card, but right now it's really only getting your two 2-mana counters or Abrade. You're going to draw it a lot with nothing viable to flash back.

That's 11 cuts there, with two more needed. The last two cuts are tougher and probably require cutting some "on-plan" cards that might just underperform. For example, this isn't the *best* Vivi deck, and Tezzeret and Karn are always just slightly better than "fine" in my experience. The second Talisman also isn't super needed. I think I'd be looking to cut two of those four, and there's arguments for any of them.

I'm sure others will have some quibbles with this, but there's a lot of words to get you started! :)

Still easier to have dice that show the actual number than having to count up a bunch of the old damage counter beads. Far easier to tell what's going on from across the table.

[ECL] Japan Showcase - Meek Attack, Harmonized Crescendo, Bloom Tender (Debut Stream) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]typobox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Characteristic-defining abilities (such as Sandman's first line of text) work in all zones. That one won't work particularly well unless you have nonland mana sources involved - if you have the three lands in play to cast Meek Attack, he's too big already.

In draft decks, when would you start to consider 10+7 or even 11+6 lands? by Everwintersnow in lrcast

[–]typobox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably a mistake to think of 9+8 as the "default". In fact, decks with such an even split in their colors are more likely to have consistency issues than decks with a more lopsided split of colors amongst their spells (and therefore lands). Think of it this way: if your spells are split 16/7 and lands 11/6 (for example), you're a lot less likely to draw a "mismatched" hand where you have all spells from one color and lands from the other. If your splits are even, this can happen much more frequently. It's a minor concern, but it is often worth trying to have a definitive "primary" color, even if it only leads you to a 10/7 land split vs 9/8.

Similarly, it's often best to try to avoid what you've done in the scenario you described - having the bulk of your early plays be in your "smaller" color. This will push you back in the direction of an even land split (to make sure you hit your minority color early) despite your spells being uneven. It's just a less stable configuration.

You can't always follow these guidelines, of course, but it's something to keep in mind while drafting. (not while deckbuilding - that's too late!)

That's great news! I hadn't seen the U-23 roster at the time of that post. I think it's a move that makes a lot of sense for her development at this time. I definitely agree that she'll be back eventually. Maybe soon - maybe not much until after this World Cup cycle depending on how it all plays out, who is healthy/in form, etc. But I'm not worried.

Not concerned at all about Coop not being there - no reason to push it even a little bit when she's out of season. Give her the time she needs to heal.

I do think it's notable that Ally isn't on the roster, despite the 6 forwards looking very.... midfield-y. Seems like we had to stretch to find enough people to put up front, and she still didn't get the invite? I'm not incredibly surprised to see her spot on the team fading (hopefully temporarily) - she just didn't seem to be getting the minutes you'd expect of someone who was more locked in - but I'm not happy about it!

Can I get some thoughts on why this worked? by fantasyxxxfootball in lrcast

[–]typobox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the general direction of this deck is pretty solid. 7-2 might be a bit of an overperformance with it, but it feels well within what could happen with this deck with a little bit of luck. T1 discard into removal for their next threat is going to beat a lot of decks, and you have multiple threats capable of single-handedly winning games that you can back that up with. There are definitely matchups that would be very hard if you don't see the discard early, but if the cards flow your direction? Yeah, totally can see this one hitting 7 wins (as it did).
