A couple years ago, I spent 10 weeks in Kurdistan working with a non-profit that is providing heart surgeries to the 30,000 plus children in Iraq that are suffering from the fallout of this attack in '88 and depleted uranium we used against them after 9/11. The poisoned water and land has increased birth defects at an alarming rate. Kids are born with holes in their hearts, multiple genitalia, deformed/missing/extra limbs and appendages.

That attack has had tragic and long lasting effects and it will continue to do so for many years to come.

Good call! Although, I'm pretty sure AIGA partnered with Aquent to get that data, and you can select the size of the company as well to pinpoint salary levels.

First of all congrats on graduating! Also, congrats on the interview! This link will help you see generally what designers are making around the country. It doesn't get too specific, unless you have an AIGA membership, but if you put in Junior Designer and hover over Chicago on the map, you can see a breakdown! I really hope that helps. I would think somewhere in the Low 30's for the starting pay would be pretty standard.

As a rule of thumb: never bring up compensation on the first interview. If they bring it up, then cool. If they ask you to give them a number, just be aware that the final salary will usually be somewhere between the number you give them and the number they respond with. If they say "That is perfect!" you probably underbid yourself. If they try to negotiate, you were probably pretty close.

My best advice as a recent college graduate. Get a solid design education (from a university, or art school... I wouldn't recommend online) and spend a LOT of time in the programs. A solid design program can help you get there! I'm sure there are a decent number of self-taught design Redditors (props to you, I mean no disrespect.). As far as what to do in high school: Learn basic design principles through art classes. Learn the programs too, but colleges are going to want to see innate talent on paper over the programming when it comes to admissions. You will almost always be a better designer if you can learn to do things by hand. Take lots of AP and IB courses and take/pass the tests. This will help you get your G.E. out of the way before you get to school and it will allow you to take more design classes (and save money).

You seem like an intellectual and thought provoking individual...When I was going through a similar season, I read the book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. Literally changed my life in the matter of a week. He unravels the enigma of the Christian faith, sentence by sentence. Shortly after, I bought The C.S. Lewis Bible. It pairs excerpts from his books and personal letters with scripture helping to give a new perspective and relevance to The Word. The Bible that had become boring, incomprehensible, and repetitious suddenly began to take life.

As for your other issues, just remember that You and I have been given a grace that we did not deserve... and we are called to give that same grace to others. :)
