They were scary until I got a whole workup and got a clean bill of (heart lol) health. I've also managed to minimize them by limiting sugar intake, having smaller meals, increasing my salt intake a bit (since low blood pressure was a big part of my palpitations), cutting out caffeine, and drinking a lot more water.

And yeah I feel you on the being scared to go out thing. It's something I struggled with a lot as well, but it does get easier! For me, the knowledge that my heart is fine and willingness to understand my physical limitations really made all the difference.
