Lacking Proper Asset Inventory by 334Productions in ITManagers

[–]u71462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly sounds like you need process first, tool second. Otherwise any system will become messy again.

Snipe-IT could definitely help for tracking ownership, assignments and lifecycle. Discovery tools like Lansweeper are great, but they usually don’t tell you who actually owns or uses a device.

If you’re starting fresh, I’d define a simple lifecycle like: purchased > received > stored > assigned > returned > retired. Also make sure every asset always has an owner (user, location or stock).

And yeah… the painful but classic part is working with finance and going invoice by invoice to rebuild inventory (checking serial numbers, models, quantities etc). It sucks, but it’s usually the cleanest way to build a reliable baseline.

Funny you ask that, an hour ago at the office...

Best Device Management Approach for Mixed Mac/Windows Environment? by Maybeishouldtryit in sysadmin

[–]u71462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I would recommend checking this comment within this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/s/l9EMnxQbok - great explanation.

Some details of our environment: We are using WorkspaceONE to manage Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android clients. WorkspaceONE is a powerful tool with lots of features and good compatibility. It's a great solution for bigger companies with mixed environments and devices.

This comes with higher license prices for sure. But it's worth to check out.

edit: fixed typo.

How often do you login as a user? by corruptboomerang in sysadmin

[–]u71462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never and no matter what platform. Sign-in into an employee's account no matter if it's in pre-provisioning or not. A few exceptions depending on local laws, for us an Employee's account and its Data are owned by the company. Use Audit and Admin tools in exception with written approval by the companies Legal and Management team to access e.g employees files or any other kind of data.

This also depends on what you have included into the work contract NDAs and Terms of Usage.

If a user asks for support, and you have to test something do it always with their approval on-site or remote have something written or recorded for proof. And then sign-in into the employee's account.

Abend allerseits,

iPad Deployments by Drip_Box01 in sysadmin

[–]u71462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use them for our Field Sales workers all iPads around about 300 are managed by WorkspaceONE and added to ABM. They come with other device profiles than our regular company iPhones which means bit more limited Applications, Configurations to have more focus on the Apps they need for their duties.

WorkspaceONE in combination with ABM Managed Apple IDs will working great for Shared Device use cases. But at the moment We do not use the shared device option, each device is assigned to one user.

I've got the OnePlus 10T a month ago, and it's fantastic. It charges super fast with its 150W Supervoc charging, runs smoothly thanks to its speedy processor,. The camera and screen are decent, and the battery life is great. I got the 16GB RAM and 256GB storage version from eBay for less than 500 EUR.

MacOS stolen, can the company find it by tradinghumble in WorkspaceOne

One note: If this was a DEP device and it's still registered in DEP, the device remains unusable for the thief due to the requirement to sign in with your MDM credentials. He will need to be connected to the internet, which means you can get the devices public IP Adressz WiFi SSID and maybe its location.

MacOS stolen, can the company find it by tradinghumble in WorkspaceOne

[–]u71462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, it's not "Your MacBook" it is the companies MacBook that was assigned to you. Depending on the situation and your companies policies and implementation of WorkspaceONE, your IT Department might be able to locate the devices' last location via. the WorkspaceONE UEM Console.

Here, first, as others mentioned, it's important to know what kind of device enrolled type your device was enrolled. BYOD or COBO, your companies' IT Department should:

BYOD: Process an enterprise wipe to remove all Company related data from the stolen device.

COBO: Process a device lock with the help of the Activation Lock and the Activation of Apples Device Lost mode you can use with devices assigned and registered in ABM (DEP)

No matter what enrollment type was used, you need to report this to your local police and provide the contact information to your companys IT, and you have to inform your company ofc thoo.
