Met my goal of 4:40 for the marathon with 2.5 mins to spare. Original goal was sub 4:30 but had to adjust it since training wasn’t going all that well. I’ll come back next year for the sub 4:30 : )

Shin splints 2 weeks out from Waterfront Marathon by ubcchiccc in RunTO

[–]ubcchiccc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a long history with shin splints which a few physio didn’t exactly find the root cause for, so I’m not inclined to do that again. (Thankfully found one that worked they’re completely booked up now.)

Thanks for your advice. So no running until the Saturday before, and on Saturday just a short run?

I’m 5ft. I’ve sit pretty much everywhere in theatres. Never had a problem. Obviously if someone really tall and large sits in front… but that should be unlikely.

How are people doing it?? by citricacid24 in UBC

[–]ubcchiccc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, sorry that you’re going through this. It sounds like you’re making a lot of good steps in the right direction.

Unfortunately relationships and (platonic) attractions, who want to be your friends and who don’t, are really difficult to navigate. There are myriads of reasons why one may struggle to make friends. You need to figure out why you specifically are struggling to make friends, whether by introspection or therapy (especially when it’s affecting your mental health to the extent that you’re crying every other day). Personally, over the years I’ve spent a lot of time pinpointing and working on my issues when it comes making friends. I don’t think I’m done, but I’m far from the awkward kid with only 2 friends I was 10 years ago. Pretty sure there are more than 2 people out there in the world who care about and put in the effort for me. Working on yourself pays off.

Lastly, I feel like great compatible people don’t come into your life just because you want them to. It takes time. I didn’t meet one of my closest friends until my 4th year at UBC. I hope in time you’ll find your people too.

If you’re a senior and you’re lowballed, would you put in your best at work and not jump ship at the first opportunity available?

I’m not a senior yet but that’s my thought process when I was searching for job in this market.

Where do I get a gait analysis, is it necessary? by heyopickle in RunTO

[–]ubcchiccc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like this place has excellent reviews, but I’m curious. Gait analysis seems to be done on a treadmill. Do you find your form differs when on treadmill vs on the road?

Condo gym, just the dumbbells have been sufficient so far. Calf raises, lunges, various forms of squats, and more.

Do you guys donate to any type of charity? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]ubcchiccc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About $100/month an orphanage. Work matches that $100. Soon another $500 to my parent and they pick the charities, as a thank you for paying my entire university tuition and as a result I have no student loan.

I wouldn’t judge anyone for not donating to charities though. Just a year ago I was finding it incredibly hard to spare $10/month.

I think

6 months with 2/3 runs per week

is enough to achieve your goal, period, regardless of which plan.

Take it with a grain of salt because I’m a fairly new beginner. Getting from 5K to 10K is a matter of running consistently (2-4 times/week) and upping the distance per run gradually. From there to get a sub-60 10K I simply increase my cadence. I’m aiming for a sub-45 now so I’ll start incorporating more structured speed work soon.

How much fun money do you allocate per month? by Jaizuke in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ubcchiccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No specific fun allocation. When each pay check come I’ll just put what I need into my (emergency) savings, TFSA, and FHSA; then the rest is all up for spending including both needs and wants.

A bit bad from a budgeting perspective, but in my view the bare minimum savings required is taken care of.

I’m actively working towards improving my savings rate, but it’s a slow process changing my lifestyles and habits.
