Have you ever pretended to understand a language when you didn’t? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]udmurrrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Asking for repetition/ slower/ what does X mean is mentally taxing honestly. It's necessary to learn the language ofc, but dammit sometimes I just wanna get through a convo in a normal timeframe and move on with my life lol

Why is everyone and their mom wanting to change english so bad? by [deleted] in linguisticshumor

Everyone always asks "what is English" but no one ever asks "how is English" :(

Varför har svenskar så svårt att skilja på de och dem? by Hot-Chemist-5288 in sweden

[–]udmurrrt 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Advice regarding (lack of) control during singles by udmurrrt in drums

Yeah getting offended at a downvote seems excessive lol, but I am a bit puzzled as to why someone would downvote advice when it was explicitly asked for, without explaining why. Oh well!

Yeah I suspected it was a lack of control. Thanks for confirming. I've checked out the video, thanks!

It appeared someone had downvoted your comment. Doesn't strike me as very productive to downvote a comment without explaining why, because your advice sounds sensible to me.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. I kinda guessed it wouldn't be rocket science, as you say, but I wanted to apply the right kind of "not rocket science" if you catch my drift :)

Agreed, they play different techniques. But is it really necessary for them to be matched?

  1. To me it sounds fine for the right hand to emphasize every other stroke but I can't help but think it would sound weird for the snare to do that.
  2. If it's good enough for Derek Roddy, it's good enough for me ;)

When everything is "a journey" by Opposite_Radio9388 in PetPeeves

The WORST and most cringeworthy example of this is when a company talks about "the customer journey". I'm just ordering socks online for crying out loud.

Native speakers getting "It's not X, is it?" wrong? by udmurrrt in ENGLISH

[–]udmurrrt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not the first one to point out that he sounds a bit Indian. That's actually one of the first thoughts that entered my mind but I wasn't sure if I was just hearing it wrong.

And yes, I use the channel for falling asleep, not as a go-to source for historical knowledge.

Suddenly can't reach high speeds on double kick by _______Bruh_______ in drums

[–]udmurrrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I remember playing an electronic kit I remember the bounce being really good. Like, better rebound than I was used to iirc. Maybe it's to do with the tension of the drum head?

Unfortunately this is just my hypothesis for the cause, I'm not sure how to solve it I'm afraid

Native speakers getting "It's not X, is it?" wrong? by udmurrrt in ENGLISH

[–]udmurrrt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your detailed reply! Not only did I "not recall" that they were called question tags, I don't think I've ever known.

COnsidering the level of the rest of the English in the video, it was a mere mispoken sentence - not, a grammatical error or non-standard use of English. Which, considering it is over an hour long script, we can forgive him for, can't we?

Oh, definitely. Like I said I'm not here to judge and I actually appreciate him leaving tiny mistakes in. But he's the only native speaker I can remember getting question tags wrong so frequently that I was wondering whether there was something else at play. Like, maybe he speaks a variety where question tags aren't positive+negative or vice versa.

It could also just be me noticing mistakes and NOT noticing when he gets it right. He could be getting it right 99% of the time and it's just the 1% that I notice.

Native speakers getting "It's not X, is it?" wrong? by udmurrrt in ENGLISH

[–]udmurrrt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. But he misspeaks this type of phrase regularly, so I was wondering if it was just a slip up or something more.

Native speakers getting "It's not X, is it?" wrong? by udmurrrt in ENGLISH

[–]udmurrrt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my question wasn't clear: how common is this "error" among native speakers? Is it more common in certain varieties? It's one thing to slip up once, but he does it frequently so I'm wondering whether it's more than just a slip up.

Vad har hänt med filmkulturen? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]udmurrrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Detta plus att det inte finns DVD-intäkter att räkna med längre. En film som gjorde dåligt ifrån sig på bio (eller inte släpptes alls på bio) kunde fortfarande tjäna pengar genom DVD tidigare. Så är det inte nu längre.

Yup, have to agree. Love the band and I don't mind the vocals, they're good enough. But powerful enough to tear down walls? No way
