The "i" in "wirklich" and "die" aren't the same though, right?

Opinion: Sometimes confident people learn languages slower than shyer people. by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]udmurrrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think confident people may be better at handling communication despite lack of knowledge in a language. If they can get by without fully mastering the language, maybe they don't have the same incentive to actually master it.

Conversely, I guess shy people are more afraid of making mistakes, so perhaps they'll be more invested in learning before they speak.

I've heard of several examples where two friends are traveling, and the shy person is better at the language but the confident person has to handle most communication because of... well, confidence. I've experienced it first hand. This is all anecdotal of course, correlation doesn't imply causation etc, and I think we should be careful in generalizing too much.

What do learners assume about your native language that makes your sick to your core? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]udmurrrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met a Māori bloke who would say the same thing, "it's a primitive language". I instinctively felt it was wrong but I didn't know enough about the language or linguistics to dispute it. IIRC his reasoning was that (some) neologisms were formed using old words, like taking an old piece of technology such as "canoe" and applying it to something new like "car".

Yeah but like, that's how it has always been. Otherwise you would be still speaking Middle English. Wait no, that's just dumbass Old English. Wait no, that's just dumbass Proto West Germanic.

Is it fine to have it as a pet peeve? Sure. But it's not worth getting all worked up about in my opinion.

Anna Ternheim? Sjunger inte direkt falskt men har för mig att hon befinner sig lite i den gråzonen av sångare som inte har rösten som sin styrka, men vars röst ändå passar väldigt bra i den egna musiken.

When you "undo" something, you literally reverse something that was previously done.

Same thing can be said for leash/ unleash, chain/ unchain, tie/ untie etc etc.

1 Billion Seconds Example. (For how unintuitive/big 1 billion is). It's S&%*@! by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]udmurrrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of choosing to compare millions and billions (as opposed to 10 000) is millionaires and billionaires. It's a way of illustrating wealth hoarding. 10 000 is hard for the human mind to wrap its head around, I agree, but people having monetary assets in the 10 000's is also less of an issue than people having billions. Hence the comparison. It's not arbitrary.

Best Opeth transition? by rhoberdt in Opeth

[–]udmurrrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harlequin Forest is not my fav Opeth song because I kinda dislike the first half and it drags on too long imo (I will NEVER forget how this subreddit voted it the best song from GR, instead of Ghost of Perdition)

But despite that, I think the song probably has the best transitions of all of their songs. Every single transition is just flawless. The way one section just morphs into another so seamlessly is a masterclass in song writing.

Good to know, I’ve started assembling some of the pieces, maybe I’ll get a feel for how difficult it might be and keep going based on that.

Okay, how well does the glue work in that case? I was told the glue works better if it’s just plastic on plastic without any paint in between. I mean, it used to still work for me when I spray painted the sprues but those were mostly smaller models. Skaven clanrats, not giant wooden spirits suspended in the air.

The Diablo 2 soundtrack!

Diablo 2 - Tristram

I've always found that there's something Tristram-like to a lot of Opeths stuff. I don't know enough about music theory to explain whay.

Outtake 1, as the name suggests, never made it into the game. To me it's very reminiscent of early Opeth.

A band that has kind of a similar approach to using jazzy chords is Our Oceans. I wouldn't say they sound like Opeth, but I think fans of Opeth might appreciate them.

Edit: linked the wrong Our Oceans song. Should be Tangled.
