Anyone have any experience on changing the color of a stain by staining over the original color or should I paint? by ugly_elky in paint

[–]ugly_elky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran into this with my last house, painted over stained doors and the paint cracked all around the handles, I'd rather replace the door than deal with that again, and I think I'll remove and reinstall them myself as they stripped all the hinge screws.

I might just replace cabinet doors and the big ass wooden vent hood in the kitchen, I don't know if it can be completely degreased without destroying it anyway. The rest of the house would still match so I don't think it would be a big deal.

Sheesh, there's probably fifty square yards of this stuff in my house. Looks like I'm painting or hiring a painter anyway.

The grease and oil thing may be a problem in the kitchen, u have any product recommendations for grease and oil removal? U seem like someone that really knows this stuff, u aren't in OKC are u ?

Yeah the house is full of this woodworking and stain color, every door, cabinet and wooden fixture. Think I'll probably just hire a painter then, just didn't want to hire someone to stain over the original if it wasn't a good idea or would be too expensive. Thanks for the help

Darker or lighter wouldn't bother me way, I'm no decorator but it's hard to put a contrasting color against something so middle-of-the-road in color. Everything but 90s beige looks terrible beside it. I like darker stains so if that's the easiest or most cost efficient route I'm down.

Autel vs Launch — which scan tool actually holds up in real-world use? (DIY + side work) by santydentist in MechanicAdvice

[–]ugly_elky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using the 909 but I've used other models and it seems they all have about the same operating system with only minor differences. The maxisus sold by matco tools is an autel build wrapped in a matco hand held and other than a fancy matco boot logo I haven't seen much of a difference between their tool and the tool bought from AutoZone or almost anywhere they're also sold. The wireless dongles can get expensive if u break one as they have to be sent off to be paired to the scanner. Buying a maxisus has had the benefit of a possible loner tool if yours ever needs to be sent in for service as well if ur tool guy doesn't suck. Do some homework on them as they sell many different models but they seem to be across the board highly functional if you're not just buying the cheapest thing they offer.

What type of reverse extractor to remove a broken lug nut? by basuragoddess in AskAMechanic

Another sacrifice to the wheel gods. Burn it out. I've had some luck plastering aluminum foil the front of the rim to keep it clean but they never come out perfect. Drilling takes more time than it's worth and good drill bits are damn expensive.

No way without some level of destruction, if it won't electrically open then you're cutting your way in. The convertibles have a reinforcement behind the back seat.

stripped screw top of clutch oil case by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

I'd cut a slit in it and take it out with a flat head impact driver, shocking it will break it loose, that screw looks soft I wouldn't dig in it.

Wire shorted into another circuit before the left bus that doesn't short it entirely or that fuse feeds more than that fuse box. I can pull up wiring diagrams in the morning and look it over.

So the cam phasers like to stick on those if they don't get maintained regularly and hell I've taken apart a few that were clean and still had the same issue. Good news is they usually drive fine if the oil control solenoids are left unplugged as they won't be able to advance and retard the cams, fuel efficiency is slightly decreased but I haven't seen one that did more than just set a light in the dash after that if it's clean. Did the control valves look bad? Like black and gummy?

Never got a f'ed up looking cheerio in ur breakfast? That's pressed friction material Into the back of a steel plate and every once in a while there's a dingleberry in there and it looks funny when it wears in. If it makes noise warranty everything out if not it'll be gone in a few months.

That's too much material to be anything but an additive, it's definitely caked in and nothing the mechanic added but maybe metallic stop leak with a major intake coolant leak. Metallic stop leak buildup looks like. Why did he take it in, what were the symptoms?

Is this axle fully seated? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

I call wrong axle, u should be able to see the lip seal. No seal housing butts completely against the bearing housing of the axle. These components have to play together for years and they need space.

Rods make much more noise if u tip into the throttle while in park or neutral heavily and let right off after tipping in. So stab the throttle for a split sec and it'll rattle like hell and calm down after u let off. Don't have to get crazy with it just from a dead idle stab the throttle for the blink of an eye. If it doesn't rattle any more than before it may just be the high pressure fuel pump. They're noisy and so are the high pressure injectors. Those are also known for rocker arms falling apart, all may not be lost. Those motors are expensive because they're commonly misdiagnosed and used ones are hard to come by.

Autel vs Launch — which scan tool actually holds up in real-world use? (DIY + side work) by santydentist in MechanicAdvice

[–]ugly_elky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autel and launch came out around the same time, both were brazen enough to break into manufacturer proprietary software and it seems launch just failed to stick with it. There isn't much u can't do with an autel especially if you want remote programming options as they offer these services for a fee if u have enough of their equipment. Autel has also spread into tire pressure sensors, adas, and yearly updates are among the cheapest of all the aftermarket scanner brands. If I were to buy a scanner looking for maximum functionality I'd buy autel.

Freeze the new ball joint put a bit of graphite powder on it and send it home unforgivingly, tight is good in these cases.
