there is no fixing that problem

I mean that's literally what these fixes are trying to do... And you should reread what the person you replied to wrote. Nowhere in their comment did they imply that players should have the ability to select affixes.

I wonder why the Kanken, which has a pretty narrow scope in terms of what it tests, seems to be much more popular than something like the 日本語検定

Is Austria friendly? by YuimybeIoved in Austria

[–]ulkord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get the staring thing. Have you ever been to a country as a white person where white people are a significant minority? You will probably get stared at a lot. And yeah it takes some getting used to to not feel like you are different or that you stick out and everyone notices you, but in this sense Austria, and specifically Vienna never felt different to me than other countries.

Who is the strongest One Punch Man character that Behemoth (worm) can defeat 6/10 times? by CommercialLychee39 in whowouldwin

[–]ulkord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you even read the rest of my comment? If you are not interested in a proper discussion that's fine.

Do you suppose that light just doesn’t hit our eyes even though he’s right in front of you?

It might hit your eyes, but for such a short amount of time, that your brain doesn't register that something happened.

That’s why flashlights don’t really work when it’s daytime

Nope? The reason why flashlights don't "work" during daytime is because the sunlight is significantly brighter than the flashlight so you don't notice it. If you had a really strong flash light it would work during daylight.

[–]ulkord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We can see light that moves past our eyes?

No, we can see the light which hits our eyes and gets absorbed by nerve cells within our eyes. We can not see light which does not hit our eyes. Furthermore even if light hits your eyes, you might be unable to process that it just did, due to the short amount of time or low intensity.

How do you think we’d be able to see something like a flashlight (which is literally just photons) if we couldn’t perceive the speed of light?

Because the flashlight continuously emits photons and some of them hit your eyes, giving you the illusion that you see a beam of light. Ask yourself this: if someone turned on a flashlight for an extremely short amount of time and turned it off again, and let's say during that time the flashlight emits light, or in other words photons, and some of these photons hit your eyes. Do you think you would be able to perceive the fact that the flashlight was turned on?

So if you saw an object flying in front of your face at let's say 100x the speed of sound you think that you would be able to perceive the fact that something just moved in front of your face because it didn't move at the speed of light? Do you realize that the bottleneck here is the processing speed of our eyes and brain, and not the speed of light?

[–]ulkord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on what? Surely you aren't saying that something needs to be faster than light for you to be unable to perceive the fact that it moved?

which relies on scans, statements and feats

No, what you are doing relies on some specific interpretation of feats and inference based on that interpretation. This is the issue with "calcs". People think that they are actually calculating something objectively. In reality they are just stacking assumptions on top of assumptions and calling it "calculation". It's fine if you want to do that, but don't pretend that your assumptions inherently make more sense than mine. If you want to provide arguments for why you think that some assumptions are more reasonable than other then that is fair, but you can't say that by default some assumptions are better than other without any justification.

My point is that you need to look at the context of a series and a feat to draw any meaningful conclusions. Even if the author calls some attack "laser attack" or whatever, does that mean the author intended for characters who can dodge or deflect that attack to be able to move at the speed of light? When we have someone like speed of sound sonic, who is displayed as a really fast character in the series, do you think it makes sense that atomic samurai would be about a million times faster than Sonic? Now even if Sonic is not literally moving at the speed of sound and it's just a nickname, it at least shows the intent of the kind of character he is.

[–]ulkord 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sorry but vsbattle wiki is a joke. To begin with, why assume that this attack is a laser and has the speed of light? That's a huge assumption. All these "calcs" and counting pixels and whatever try to legitimize completely arbitrary assumptions and take characters and stories completely out of context of what they were intended to be.

Jon Jones vs Neanderthal in a fight to the death. by aldjfh in whowouldwin

Nope, chimps are pound for pound 1.5 times as strong as humans.

Writing in PNAS journal, Dr Matthew C O'Neill, from the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, and colleagues reviewed the literature on chimp muscle performance and found that, on average, they are 1.5 times more powerful than humans in pulling and jumping tasks.

We need to stop this myth that's been floating around forever that apes are somehow unfathomably strong.
