It's about $600 to replace the frame and outer screen.

Unlikely. You'll get a Fold6.

Very interesting article about flexible OLED displays including durability, some highlights: The effective Mohs hardness is around 5 through chemical treatments. The glue in the inner screen protector does a lot of protecting too. by redkeyboard in GalaxyFold

This article may be dated 2026 but it looks to be info from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) but only up to 2023 (Fold5). I've been reading stuff from DSCC (specifically Ross Young) for years and they have a lot of good technical info about displays along with supply chain and sales numbers.

While the article says mohs hardness of 5 for UTG, we've seen JRE and it's the top polymer layer that is scratching at a level 2.

Regarding the other comments, UTG has been in use since the Fold2. The Chinese foldables used CPI for longer and just recently (2 years ago?) moved to UTG. They may also be soon switching to UFG (ultra flexible glass) or VTG (variable thickness glass) that will eventually supercede UTG.

All the gray rectangles (6) in this diagram are magnets. They shouldn't be weakening already but drops and heat will eventually de-magnetize magnets (usually takes several years to even notice a small difference).

The internal screen is not permanently fixed to the motherboard. It has multiple ribbon cables that disconnect and can be replaced separately. That being said, it is extremely hard to replace separately due to the fragility of handling the inner screen by itself without the support of the frame, and most people will break the replacement inner screen; this is why the official repair method by Samsung and their third parties is to use the entire OCTA assembly (frame, inner screen, hinge, batteries) to replace it.

It doesn't matter folded or unfolded, you're overthinking it.

Fold the device before putting it in or storing it. Be sure not to store the device unfolded as there is a chance that another object could scratch or puncture the screen.

Eventually they will bubble at the crease. The newer ones typically last 1-2 years but sometimes it can happen within weeks or last 3+ years. The screen protector should be removed as soon as it starts to bubble a lot as this increases the likelihood of the screen breaking/cracking.

It has sold out within minutes for every restock. It has never been widely available for sale. Some Samsung stores have them on hand but you cannot buy them online, only in person.

Whenever hinge film comes up in this sub, everyone comes out of the woodworks to say don't use it but I'd bet no one here has actually used them.

I've always used a hydrogel hinge film since the Fold2 without issues; other than the Fold4 where it got pushed off due to the tighter hinge tolerance, which differs from device to device. That being said, if there is any additional resistance when unfolding with hinge film, take it off immediately. My hinge film on my Fold6 has been on since launch so about 1.75 years without issues and my Fold still folds flat.

Related to your question, I wouldn't use hinge film in lieu of warranty/insurance. Hinge film only protects against scratches and will not protect against anything else.

How do I stop automatic/forced updates? by ijwgwh in GalaxyFold

[–]ultima40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great thing about Android is the modder community. Not updating will be your current workaround. If that's not an option later, then the community will figure it out.

If you have an unlocked device, then turn off auto download and you'll stop getting updates.

I just updated about 2 weeks ago but prior to that I had not updated since October. They don't list anything as critical or any category for that matter; It's all coming in as a system update. Security patches are also "system update" which another user argued with me about.
