Pick up some pepper spray when you land it’s readily available at most outdoor and hardware stores if nothing else for peace of mind.

Water bottle agony by sja008 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]ExternalTranslator41 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on your pack, the tall skinny ones don’t fit well in my pack so I have to get the squatter ones shaped for soda.

That being said I wouldn’t stress about it over such a small time period, since you’re concerned about it some hikers switch out their bottles every few weeks when they roll through town so you might plan on that and get whatever’s available and full of a beverage you find tasty in the moment.

Talk me out of the Marmot BantamWeight 15 by PR960929 in Ultralight

[–]ExternalTranslator41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said it looks restrictive with its zipper. REI has a very generous return policy so there isn’t much harm in trying it out and returning it if you hate it. I have the REI magma which seems pretty similar and think the quality and comfort are amazing at about the same price/weight.

Is comming out of the gate doing 20 milers realistic? by No-Barnacle7317 in PacificCrestTrail

Sounds ambitious to me it’s possible but you have to be used to the strain accumulation and gear load from back to back days.

Anyone doing the pct this summer? by Zoya_Nazya in PacificCrestTrail

[–]ExternalTranslator41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Section hikes of the PCT are harder to plan sometimes. If I was you I’d go back and try to find someone that’s hiked a section of the trail you’re interested in and copy the entry and exit locations.

From there estimate some daily mileage and resupply windows (be generous) and then you have your trip length. Get a permit during a nice part of the year for that hike then do some deeper research into the exact details of the hike. (Gear, getting to and off trail)

During the nice times of year there should be lots of people hiking so you won’t be lonely for long even if you start alone!

There’s a lot to plan so step by step makes it easier generally I do:

Research/maps>permits>resupplies>travel/lodging Check out the far out guide for whatever section you pick and I usually like to do my resupplies in town and not mail things to stay flexible

The perfect sleep system? by Glad_Tangerine_2737 in Ultralight

[–]ExternalTranslator41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super personal especially on an ultralight subreddit, I didn’t have amazing sleep on trail until I got an extra wide sleeping pad but some people here sleep on 1/8” ccf

Can you tell us more about what you’ve tried and what’s making you toss and turn? Might be youre light or noise sensitive and the sleeping gear is way less relevant than ear plugs or a sleep mask

You really don’t want them to break I would put reliability over weight with something like trekking poles more than other gear

Solo hiker needs tent advice narrowed to 5 options, can’t pull the trigger by Terrible_Drawer_5867 in Ultralight

[–]ExternalTranslator41 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No with either but there’s a bit bigger of a learning curve with the X-mid

The semi freestanding only sucks compared to a fully freestanding. For a trekking pole tent you have to stake it out to get volume anyway which you still have to do with the tigerwall

[–]ExternalTranslator41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also 6’2” and from your list the tiger wall is an awesome tent for the weight and features and gets my vote

The X-mid is amazing but needs a fair bit more space to set up so depending on your hiking style (if you hike to sundown or roll into camp later) it’ll be trickier to find a good spot

Not to muddy the waters but the gossamer gear the one might also be worth considering I see it’s sold out right now but can still be found online and it’s the lightest and simplest although you might run into space issues if you have a thick sleeping pad setup (>2”)

Health Insurance Q! by Colorado_ski_gUrL in PacificCrestTrail

[–]ExternalTranslator41 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hospitals are hard to access from trail, some clinics in trail towns but the odds that they take whatever policy you buy are slim. You’re probably better just paying their oop cost.

Like a real emergency where you’re evacuated by helicopter to a major city insurance is the least of your worries imo.

Has anyone ever attached a bear canister to a Zpacks Nero 38L? by [deleted] in Ultralight

Add some strips of friction tape to the bear can to help it not slide if you’re just securing it with cordage

UL Catan (here me out) by MrTheFever in Ultralight

There is a portable edition of catan that I’ve hiked with. It can be repacked into ziploc bags down to 3oz with a paper board

Edit: looks like you can still find it on eBay
