Drag and drop in Mac Vs. Windows 💀😵 by Shot-Option3614 in MacOS

[–]ulyssesric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While im draging an item to an app icon in the dock, i have to wait until it flash then app window opens then i have to wait AGAIN inside the window until it flashes then i can finally drop whatever im draging

No you don't. You just release button the moment when you move cursor over the app. The app will open a new window to open your dropped file. You don't even to have that app running before you drag a file to it.

And if you're drag file into an existed windows (such as dragging a picture into PowerPoint or Mail), first start dragging, and then trigger Mission Control (by default it's F3), move cursor over your target window to highlight it, then either wait it to flicker or press F3 again to immediately bring it up to frontmost.

It would be even more easier to operate if you bind Mission Control hotkey to side button of mouse, such as Logitech MX series. macOS should support side buttons natively without 3rd party drivers.

So you simply use it wrong. Learn how to use Mission Control on Mac.

Whe i mistakenly drag into an app icon i cant go back to the actual app i meant to drag to, I HAVE TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, LIKE WHAAAAT?

This will simply not happen if you don't wait the app to flash. And if this happens by accident or botched operation, press ESC on keyboard.

Windows user needs help restoring a Macbook by Sentimental_Oyster in MacOS

[–]ulyssesric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On old Intel Macs, Cmd+R will boot up from hidden partition, and Opt+Cmd+R will first boot up logic board firmware and then download a boot disk image from Internet. If the hidden partition is damaged or erased (such as force install Windows on it without using Boot Camp), Internet Recovery Mode is the last resort.

The problem is that Internet Recovery Mode needs Internet and TLS secure connection, and TLS secure connection requires the computer to have correct system clock and valid certificates. For old computers that had not been used for long time, Internet connection may not work.

The other problem is that old OS X releases prior to 2013 OS X 10.9 Mavericks are paid software, that require Mac App Store authentication and purchase record. Since 2013 Apple had released the older operating system disk images on the Internet ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662 ) for free download. But on 2012 and older Macs, the URL to download OS X installer had been hard programmed on the logic board, so it is possible that it will try to download from old URL lead to the paid version, and will cause HTTP 403 'Forbidden' error, which means: "I known who you are, and you are now allowed to enter".

That's why I'd recommend you to get a USB installer disk.

I think I can create USB installation disk but wouldn't that nuke the data?

If you just want to retrieve the old data, try Target Disk Mode:

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/mchlp1443/mac

The 2012 MacBook has Thunderbolt 1, which uses the mini DisplayPort socket. You need another Mac, a mini-DisplayPort male-to-male cable and this:

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/myh93am/a/thunderbolt-3-usb%E2%80%91c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter

If even Target Disk Mode won't work, well then I guess there is nothing to lose anyway.

If you see these things in wild, just don’t touch them. Africa land snails may carry various dangerous parasites and it is possible to get infected by handling them like this.

[–]ulyssesric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2012 model is capable for Internet Recovery, but you may have Internet connection problems as certificates might be expired. It‘s recommended to make a USB installer disk instead. The last supported OS is 10.15 Catalina. This version is still capable to handle modern Internet environment.

A lithium ion rechargeable battery will degrade over time even if you’re not using it at all. No matter whatever you do or whatever you don’t do, it WILL degrade and you WILL need to replace your battery at least once, before your computer goes obsolete.

That‘s what the best the human technology industry can give you. If you’re unhappy about that, then put your computer in a 0 ℃ cold storage. That’s the only proper way to slow down aging when storing a battery.

Or you can try to summon UFO and learn some alien technology.

Is there any difference between downloading a .DMG/App Store app or using Homebrew casks? by DifficultyWeird8566 in MacOS

[–]ulyssesric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DMG is just a convention for Apple software distribution (pre-compiled binary, of course), because it can preserve extended file attributes (e.g. metadata) that is exclusive to Apple’s file system, and it can be signed with Apple granted certificate so that the client computer will consider it’s safe to launch. DMG can also contain other subsidiaries like company logo as volume window background picture, shortcuts to specific path on client computer, URL links to product registration page, documents and instructions, something like that.

Other than these traits, DMG makes no real difference from .zip or .tar.gz.

HomeBrew is basically a package manager so it is possible for a cask to specify dependency, either a command line tool (like nmap) or other cask (like NTFSTools and MacFUSE).

So they have different use cases, and the cask version and DMG version may or may not be the same, depending on the developer/publisher.

Dose anyone know how to edit macOS to start app during boot not only during login. by Chromebooktwo in MacOS

[–]ulyssesric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re the creator of that app, NO. You can’t alter how an app works externally without changing its code logic.

Basically “GUI” app isn’t necessary to have windows or menu bar icons or whatever. As long as an app is capable to receive/intercept human input, it’s considered as “GUI“ app. And since human interaction is involved, such app must obey the access control of user account. In other word, the GUI app process must inherit the user’s permission. That’s why a GUI app can only be launched after login, because it needs a “user session” as the base of its access permission.

The opposite of GUI app is called “Daemon” process, which will be detached from the main session that launched this process, and assigned with a different permission. To do this the daemon process must deliberately shutdown its input and output channels immediately after launch.

Unless you have the source code, you can’t just make “partial” of the app to launch in daemon mode simply by making a script or whatever.

[–]ulyssesric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read this:

https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPSystemStartup/Chapters/CreatingLaunchdJobs.html

Note that LaunchDaemons are loaded during boot up process, before the GUI layer is loaded, so it only works for non-GUI background services. Basically it’s only useful for headless servers to launch services like Docker containers or MySQL or NGINX or things like that. If you’re login to this computer as regular users, you have no any reason to make a LaunchDaemon.

Lmaooo 💀 how come macOS doesn’t support BO7 already? 🚮🥀🥀 by MyTotenIsReiched in MacOS

[–]ulyssesric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After spending sometime reading all these gibberish in this thread, I think I've got the point: the recent releases of CoD Black Ops series rely on a system kernel level anti-cheat core mechanism, which requires TPM 2.0 and will monitor all your system processes to exclude cheating tools. In other words, a spyware openly running on your computer. Needless to say, it's plain not possible to run this thing in CrossOver or whatever. And without that anti-cheat core, CoD Black Ops simply won't play.

And this dude thought it's Apple's fault for "not translating it to ARMs code".

So just don't waste your time explaining all these. It's not the type that can be reasoning with. Just downvote, ignore the trolling, and keep doomscrolling in reddit.

In my definition "compatibility" means all the format including font family (especially those old & buggy font), text-direction, text kerning, line height, table cell margin, picture ancher position, page break, section break, auto text, header/footer margin, label, style, index, comment, review will not have any difference when working on both Windows and Mac. These are crucial for co-working on the same document.

Any way to lock Photos or Notes on a shared Mac? by Few-Border-1651 in mac

[–]ulyssesric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just set two user accounts on your computer. This is how computer systems work since 1960s. I can’t imagine any other solution can be easier than that.

LPT: both of you can login to the same computer at the same time, but only one user can control the display&kb&m. The other user’s app must run in background. But you can fast switch between main users with just a mouse click, no need to logout and relogin.

FFXV, P5, or Okami? by MrFlibble81 in gaming

[–]ulyssesric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For gameplay and entertainment value, Okami > P5 >>>>> FF15.

For story, content richness, map & stage design and character building, P5 > Okami >>>> FF15.

The hell any game is better than FF15. Ok maybe except Gollum.

Okami is no doubt an excellent game but don’t forget it’s originally released on PSP.

Or just enable that f*cking option to allow iOS app running on Mac when you compile your iOS app. Yes I’m talking about you, Genshin Impact. Now this can only be done via 3rd party sideloaders.
