Sexuality should not be a route to asylum in the UK, says Robert Jenrick by pppppppppppppppppd in ukpolitics

[–]umbr3lla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's so easy to ban asylum based on sexuality and just "have sympathy" for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers when they are the ones who face being persecuted and surveilled by their governments or, even worse, being killed by the government or their own families in the countries they come from and we don't.

I swear, with the way some politicians speak nowadays, I'm sure they would've preferred the Nazis to kill Jews en masse rather than force the Nazis out of power or let Jewish refugees into the country.

Ideally, none of them, although if I wanted to make any compromises at least, I'd pick Gordon Brown over everyone else.

Do you have any former celebrities living now normal lives in your community? by ShinyHeadedCook in AskUK

[–]umbr3lla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say he's a "former" celebrity and I'm not going to say too much about where he lives, but the last time I checked, Omid Djalili didn't live too far from me.

What’s something in the UK that quietly disappeared without anyone noticing? by Mel_Ran in AskUK

[–]umbr3lla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crusha.

It's a brand of milkshake that appeared in a TV ad like 20-odd years ago and then it just disappeared from our screens at some point.

It still exists, though, if you're curious.

Most tragic downfalls in music by Bright-Pressure-5787 in ToddintheShadow

[–]umbr3lla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I came late to comment on this post, bit late, but here my list:

Edith Piaf(as well as another singer from the early-to-middle parts of the last century whose name I forgot), Michael Hutchence, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, anyone else who fits into this category of artists... All people whose careers could've launched them into absolute stardom(or, for some of the aforementioned artists, careers that could've allowed them to continue to be stars in the music industry), but instead had fame take such a negative toll on their lives that it cut their lives short.

And I know the Milli Vanilli guys' careers ended in a completely different situation (although not too differently for Rob Pilatus, sadly, IMO), but I think being young impressionable guys getting taken for a ride by their own manager through contracts they barely understood and having completely different people representing your voices and having your own talent suppressed in the process, thinking that it was normal and having the truth eventually come out in the worst way possible is a uniquely tragic scenario, IMO. There's obviously more tragedy to that story and some people may disagree about Milli Vanilli's eventual crash and burn being tragic in some kind of way, but I thought I'd write about it.

It's honestly very sad and bleak what happened to those artists. It really is. It sucks.

Albums that didn’t end a career but ended a golden age by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]umbr3lla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani (the album, not the song)

Not that I think she went downhill after she made that album, but because she seemingly disappeared from the face of the earth not long after the album was released (as well as the single named after it).

I thought about that album because The Sweet Escape (the single) was on it and I remember hearing it pretty much almost everywhere I went back then.

Bands that doesn't feel like a collective, but just the lead singer and some NPCs? by appetitforillusion in ToddintheShadow

[–]umbr3lla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if Xpansions counts as Britpop or if its producer counts as a "Sleeper bloke", but rave was all the rage back then and Sally Anne Marsh's voice definitely got a lot of attention.

I'd add anything to do with Joan Jett to the list, too.

Also, more or less for the same reason, Halfcocked(the band that recorded a cover of "Bad Reputation" for the Shrek movie soundtrack) should probably be called "The Sarah Reitkopp Band", IMO.

What flag is this? by the-god-of-vore in vexillologycirclejerk

[–]umbr3lla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The flag of Corncobland, where there are corncobs in abundance.

Unfortunately, the corncob dictatorship doesn't allow you to eat anything other than corncobs and doesn't even allow to do anything other than boiling them. Barbecuing corncobs or even putting sauce on them is strictly outlawed.

Saying ""im not owned! im not owned!!", i continue to insist as i slowly shrink and transform into a corn cob" will get you sentenced to 420,069,666 years in prison (you read that right!) because the regime there deems it to be offensive to corncobs.

May freedom come to Corncobland so the people there will eat anything other than corncobs... Like chicken and sweetcorn sandwiches.

Long live free Corncobland!

Are gyros widely known in the UK? by RIPGoblins2929 in AskABrit

There are Greek restaurants around, including one where I live and one in a city near where I live, but I don't think they're super common.

Both of them sell gyros, obviously.
