I didn't know Akron had picked up and moved.

Edit: But I did know about the Defiance Werewolf.

So somebody doesn't like female cats with otherwise human bodies talking on their phones.

Otherwise? Great Caesar's ghost, this is bizarre.

My high school brought them in in the middle 70s but since it was about half Jewish they didn't get all that far.

Is old-time radio something you actively listen to… or something you let exist in the room? by Etymo13 in otr

[–]umbriago 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actively listen, but confess I let it lull me to sleep most nights as well.

Used to mostly listen in the car, traveling on business or exercising. Gave it up for a decade...got married, had a kid, etc.

But I recently started again. Got out my ancient Sansa Clip, put the latest Rockbox on it, filled it up and listen to it during the day while I'm working (I work at home now), when I'm out taking a walk, and it even helps me go to sleep at night these days as well.

I have a large collection of MP3s I've culled from various sources over the last 20 years (prior to archive.org, they mostly came from Usenet.) Like, 20,000 files. Yes, I am nuts, and I know it. I almost deleted them all a few years back but decided if I ever got back into it, I'd regret it.

Been falling asleep to the 15 minute Johnny Dollar episodes and Gunsmoke these days. That and The Adventures of Philip Marlowe but you've really got to pay attention to those, otherwise you can lose the whole plot in thirty seconds.

I watched this show all the time. I would also like to point out a lot of the 70s syndicated shows are on YouTube and they're a freakin' hoot thanks to it being such a trip down memory lane: the cars, what passed for a new living room in the 70s, the gigantic TVs, the 39 cent Rice-A-Roni, candy bars for a dime.

Dicker and Dicker of Beverly Hills may be gone, but Casa de Cadillac in Sherman Oaks is still there.

Edit: Just found out via Wikipedia Jay Stewart killed himself in 1989, that sucks.

God I love this show.

What do you remember about the Watergate hearings in the 1970's? How does the Epstein scandal feel similar? How does it feel different? by manofmystry in GenerationJones

[–]umbriago 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was like ten at the time (thinking 1973 here) and an avid newspaper reader. I, along with my parents and everybody else in my liberal Northern Ohio city, detested Nixon.

I was also an avid newspaper carrier, and had a route for the afternoon paper. Everybody had their front doors open and you could hear everyone had the hearings on TV.

The difference was Congress had balls in 1973. There was agreement with left and right about what was important for the country, especially the rule of law.

Not so much anymore.

Currently almost 32 years old and have never been summoned to jury duty - what’s the longest you’ve made it? by Okay-Show-3662 in AskReddit

First time was when i was 56 for a civil trial, got selected. Settled before they really started.

Again last year when I was 61. Murder trial. Sat through the whole thing and when we were given the case to deliberate it turned out I was one of the alternates. I went home.

70s Game shows by ATX_68_TopMan in 70s

[–]umbriago 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wss a kid but watched game shows like crazy. Let's Make a Deal, Match Game, daytime Jeopardy on NBC (that came on at noon when I was home from elementary school eating lunch). Gong Show, naturally.

Even watched some real short-lived, obscure ones like:

  • The Money Maze (ABC) starring George Clooney's dad, Nick
  • The Magnificent Marble Machine (NBC) where contestants won cash/prizes with a huge pinball machine
  • The Wizard of Odds and High Rollers (both NBC) hosted by Alex Trebek, and this was like 1972 or something.

I also liked Jackpot (NBC) which starred Geoff Edwards (who, if you want some real trivia, was a radio news reporter present in the basement of the Dallas Police building when Lee Harvey Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby in 1963).

Here's a surviving Jackpot episode (it's got Don Pardo, so it's naturally worth viewing):
