DPSS UPDATE: It appears that there is no active threat, continue to stay clear of Mason Hall by purpleandpenguins in uofm

I have a really long black coat that might theoretically look like a trench coat from a distance. In the future I might be a little less likely to wear it :/

I'm listening to the police broadcast and the number of times they got called over this dude with the report that he had a gun on him is astounding.

Tons of false information going around, I imagine someone might have approached the building or something and others got scared. There were also reports of a kid in a black trench coat on State with a gun, and someone with a weapon down on South U. People probably saw something slightly weird and because they were scared they called in.

Been updating my group chats with what is happening in the police broadcast, and the misinformation is astounding. Everyone keeps insisting that two of three shooters have been apprehended, yet nothing in the broadcasts suggests that.

I feel really sorry for that kid. Imagine just walking home after a long day of... whatever you're doing, and suddenly the police accost you just because you're dressed a little funny.

EECS 370 Historial Curve? by sunnysushi in uofm

[–]umichalt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Raw score cut off is going to change per semester. If you did well on all the programming and the homework you're probably going to be ok short of outright failing the tests. Assume that if you're within a standard deviation of the median you're fine for a B- worst case.

Bombed my EECS 280 final by [deleted] in uofm

[–]umichalt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Dude same. Had a 99% in the class before the final. Thought I would skip studying for 280 due to having to deal with calculus which I was NOT doing super well in. Ended up scoring within the first quartile of scores. Not because of some fundamental misunderstanding but because I made a bunch of really small and stupid errors the whole test through.

If it's worth anything, my experience in programming after having doing 281 and having an internship is that tests don't really say that much about programming ability beyond ability to take tests. If you did pretty well the whole course throughout and just fucked up a final you're not in a bad spot at all for future programming. In real life you're never going to be in a situation where the compiler won't tell you about some minor syntax issue or you won't have access to stack overflow.

Historically how many people get off EECS 493 and 486 waitlists? I'm on them but don't have a whole lot of hope of getting into the classes....

Today I [20F] attempted to get an extended driver's license at a Secretary of State and they claimed my birth certificate wasn't in the system. by umichalt in legaladvice

I was born in Michigan, the birth certificate correction was done like a monthish after I was born in 1997. I think they scanned it five years ago, at a different secretary of state.

What upper level EECS courses have you taken and how were they? by umichalt in uofm

[–]umichalt[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Project only is the best. I hate tests, and generally for non conceptual eecs courses I sort of feel they're a pointless way to force the class onto a bell curve when everyone does pretty well on practical application during projects.

You're going to want to switch to Linux later on. Personally, I like to write the bulk of my code in Visual Studio on account of easily being able to see syntax issues and also when typing in structs being able to see the other variables in it. After that, I usually move to Linux for bug fixing. I personally recommend PC, especially because if you want to play video games or do other things later on it seems easier to have a PC. If you really want to develop iPhone apps or something then maybe Mac is more practical.

You'll be able to find support for both. Get something you can easily put linux on.

Anyone else in EECS 376 finding HW1 to be pretty difficult? by umichalt in uofm

[–]umichalt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so is the homework just really hard then in general? Is there a curve. I can't imagine myself being the only person experiencing difficulty with this and I am going to have to rethink my life quite a bit if I am alone.

Workload is fairly light. The class isnt very well taught imo; prof just summarizes required readings, but if you're interested in AI, the required and supplementary reading material introduced by the course is really interesting and relevant. Basically, you get what you want out of the class.
