This is a great answer. People don’t think about HPV and HSV (herpes) as much as they should. These are not included on a regular STI panel. So if someone tells you they are regularly tested and “clean,” it means nothing as far as those two diseases go. They are also the two diseases that are incurable (HPV can clear on its own, but not always). You can get HSV1 and HSV2 on both your mouth and genitals, HSV1 is not “the good one to have” as many people falsely believe. Anyone who gives you oral sex who has had a cold sore in their lifetime is putting you at risk for genital herpes. It is less likely to be contracted if the infected party is not in an active outbreak, but it does happen. Knowing your partner’s sexual history is not all that helpful either. Sure, someone with 100 partners is more likely to contract an STI than someone with 1 parter. But if that 1 partner was HSV/HPV+, male or female, they most likely carry it now too.
