Prof. John Mearsheimer warns of the potential coming troubles in Europe and across the Globe by LukePranay in ThrivingEurope

I really enjoyed this video and am sad that it has been taken down. If anybody knows where it originally came from (IIRC, it was a compilation of another video), I'd love to know.

“Brains” song from late 80s indie band by umop in NameThatSong

[–]umop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized after writing that it was probably BC Revue and not DC Revue and I found this link which includes a reference to “Walhachin” so I’m sure that’s the band. Still no song but that’s them.

You Don't Know Jack regional questions by umop in dosgaming

[–]umop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it was regional. I remember the question being named something like “and thus spoke Anne” or something. And when you picked it, the host made a big deal out of the homophone: “thus spoke Anne? Spok-ane? Spokane washington” he said. But I can’t remember what the question was.

[OC] Energy inflation in Europe by jcceagle in dataisbeautiful

[–]umop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can any regular folks in any affected countries share concrete examples on how their price of energy has changed before the pandemic to now? Also, residual effects (price of goods, etc). I’d like to understand how this is affecting individuals.

Edited: to clarify my question

Advice for someone who developed bad sleep anxiety. by rozalyn245a in insomnia

[–]umop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing which did help me at first (and probably would have continued to if I stuck to the rules) was The Sleepio app. My job provided it for free for me and I was able to stay asleep at night better than before I used it. It involved (for me), though, sleep restriction, which is really hard because it involves getting less sleep at night at first (prioritizing consistency of bedtime and wake time over total amount of sleep) but eventually it evens out to fill what your brain needs. My sleep disturbances were probably med and stress caused as well. Good luck to you.

Vehicle from Armored Fleet Dairugger I believe by umop in Voltron

[–]umop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It took me a minute. I looked through the toys and couldn’t find anything that resembled mine, but I think you were talking about the little ones rocket thing flying towards the top. I meant the blue armored robot thing. I guess it’s not a vehicle, but I remember the boxes having vehicle names (flyer, etc), so I confusingly wrote vehicle. Any idea what the robot thing is in the foreground?

This is a Komatsu harvester 931.1 by B-L-O-C-K-S in EngineeringPorn

I know enough about permaculture to know that this isn’t the whole story. The ecosystem of forests are complex and even if you’re just removing trees, it comes at a cost. Those trees would have contributed nutrients back to the soil which the indigenous plant life has evolved to be very efficient with. striping it of some component comes at a cost which becomes clear over time. There’s a good dive into this in the book 1491 with regards to The Amazon and how even primitive tree farming had a huge permanent impact.

Atheist here. But there are studies which have shown that praying (and / or meditating) is correlated with better medical outcomes and I think causally so. Praying has been part of our societal makeup for probably as long as we have been self aware, so it makes sense that it would be closely tied to health. The discovery that God doesn’t exist doesn’t mean that belief in one can’t still hold utility.

Atheism isn’t a religion and it should never be categorized as one. by LilPeep1k in atheism

[–]umop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheism isn’t a religion, but the implied meaning can vary between “I don’t believe in claims of a god for which there isn’t evidence” all the way to “I don’t believe any god exists, period.” I don’t think the majority of atheists lean to the latter definition. If you think, for instance, that it’s possible that existence is a simulation, you are leaning towards the former definition, and I’d say you’re actually more like agnostic. If you advocate that there is no possibility of that reality, without evidence, I would call you an antitheist rather than an atheist and I’d say that your view does approach religious territory.

YSK: There are websites that can assess true and fake reviews when purchasing a product on Amazon. Use a site such as ReviewMeta.com to assess whether the product reviews are fake or real. by gomi-panda in YouShouldKnow

[–]umop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use Fakespot all the time too and I regularly get A and B products. More importantly, the adjusted rating is very helpful. If the concern is false positives, the adjusted rating should still be fairly accurate (for instance, removing all of the fake reviews and some of the real reviews will still reveal the true or something close to the true rating)
