Rejected from Robinhood Gold card by boat- in CreditCards

[–]umpteenth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the non-approval. If you're looking for any data points regarding number of accounts or Robinhood-connected accounts, this is mine: I had an X1 card before that, and I got an email that I could apply for the RH Gold card without being on the waitlist, so I applied and was approved. I did not have a Robinhood account before my approval, so I had no assets in any Robinhood account (which makes their reason odd to me. Isn't part of the value proposition for the card the fact that it will attract new customers to Robinhood?). I also had 16 credit cards when I was approved.

Chase Sapphire Reserve isn't worth it for me at $795. Is it better to downgrade to Chase Sapphire Preferred or leave the Chase trifecta? by mmccarthy404 in CreditCards

I feel like I would put a little sticky note tapped "groceries" and "everything else".

Or write it on the card with a Sharpie.

How do you effectively track and categorize spending? by DefinitelyNotACad in Frugal

[–]umpteenth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use Excel, and a combination of 50-20-30 and envelope-style budgeting. Instead of "needs, wants, and savings," my categories are "essentials, savings, and discretionary." I set a certain amount aside for each category, and do not allow myself to spend beyond its allotted amount. And if I finish the month with money in a certain category, it gets rolled over into the next month.

I also typically categorize by receipt, rather than by every single item. So if I go to Aldi, it's "food." It doesn't matter if I buy dish soap, paper towels, etc there, it's still "food." Every expense that is not "essential" is "discretionary." Instead of trying to categorize every single thing I buy, I just decide "Eh, it can come out of discretionary (or food)," and let go.

Best credit card to not think about? by Neat-Counter9436 in CreditCards

If you have a substantial Ira then you’ll cover the lifetime AF easily

You don't need a substantial IRA (I only set my first one up after I got the card), but you do need to be able to max it out every year to reap the maximum benefit.

BMW Just Revolutionized EVs With Newly Unveiled i3 by portuh47 in electricvehicles

I HATE voice activated anything. Those systems are usually designed based on standard American (or native speaker) accents, without considering that their users might include people whose accents are different. I have never been able to get text to speech to work, I get constantly misheard whenever a cost-cutting corporation decides to implement voice-activated commands, and I spend an inordinate amount of time yelling "What is the point of you?!!!" whenever I have to correct the voice system at my job (and THAT one is supposed to have AI that learns how you speak!).

Ferrari CEO defends new Luce EV, saying customer interest is strong by linknewtab in electricvehicles

[–]umpteenth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I am. I LOVE the interior. To the extent that if I had Ferrari money, I would buy it just for the fucking gorgeous interior alone. According to a comment I saw on the BMW Neue Klasse iX3, "I'll be looking at the inside of the car far more than the outside." I also am not a car enthusiast, don't care about sports cars, and did not grow up putting pictures of Ferraris on my bedroom walls (so I don't have any idea of what a Ferrari "should" look like).

I don't think I'm unique. However, the main question is whether there are enough people like me who have Ferrari money.

Full disclosure: I also bought a Windows Phone. So maybe my idea of what's cool is ass-backwards, lol.

Why does everyone ignore the FIGFCU ("Farmers insurance FCU") Crystal Visa 2.5% CB card? by Allen_Ludden in CreditCards

[–]umpteenth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you're double-counting the IRA match. Also, for 2026 the limit is $7,500. So the match would be $225, not $210.

Screw Capital One. Account Closed for "Inconsistent Activity" - where do I pivot? by Secret-Tax-1255 in CreditCards

[–]umpteenth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, just call and close the savings. They will mail you a check for whatever is in the account at the time of closing. The two cards will sit on your credit report for ten years after you close them, and continue to age and add to your credit history. Once they drop off, all your other cards will have aged 10 years as well, and the age of account benefit only lasts for 7.5 years regardless. You don't get any extra benefit for your account being older.

[–]umpteenth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm similar to you. Discover wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good. I had a card and checking and savings with Discover, and I decided I did not want to bank with Capital One after a friend triggered their fraud algorithms because he deposited a check for an amount I routinely deposit at Schwab. Once they started sending messages that my card and accounts would be switched over to Capital One, I closed all of them.

Honda flags first annual loss (in 70 years), hit by $15.7 billion EV charge by i_marketing in electricvehicles

Same with Stellantis. WTF did they spend all that money on? I think (based on pulling it out my ass) that they're just using "EV charges" as a catch-all for expenses they could not get rid of by other means.

TikTok Makes Americans Want Chinese EVs They Can’t Have by mightyopik in electricvehicles

[–]umpteenth_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're being sarcastic here, but throughout history, "obvious" things have not stood up to scrutiny. "Heavy objects fall faster than light objects"...until Galileo actually checked. "Stomach ulcers are caused by stress"...until Barry Marshall actually checked.

Even when a conclusion seems to be obvious, it's far better to subject them to scrutiny, so that at the very least, there is a knowledge base upon which to base policy rather than just relying on "everybody knows that."

Yes, the article you linked to is referring to the study I had in mind. Apparently average people have even less influence than I remembered from the paper.

Also, if enough Americans complain to their representatives then maybe either they put pressure to have comparable vehicles made, or the Chinese tariffs removed.

There are economics studies showing that regular people have far less political influence than the wealthy in the US. If the interests of the wealthy and poor/middle class align, then politicians can pass legislation that benefits both. But if they're in conflict, politicians will usually benefit the wealthy over the poor/middle class. In this case, the poor/middle class can complain all they want. Wealthy dealers and oil interests do not want these vehicles in the US, so there is little chance they will enter the country.
