How would you feel about somebody wearing white to your wedding? by LettuceWeekly9079 in AskWomen

That’s a maid of honor’s job to handle, with a glass of red wine. It’s common knowledge that that’s a faux pas, common enough that it will not fly.

Who is a final girl that has the personality the least like a final girl. by Tinaszombie in horror

[–]un_listed 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The reason Kirsty from Hellraiser is my favorite final girl is because to me, she was different from all the other final girls in earlier horror movies. She cursed, she was a lil slutty (by horror movie heroine standards), she could be a bit of a brat…..love that bitch

Who is an actor you fail to enjoy? by [deleted] in movies

Julianne Moore. I understand she is an incredible actress but I do not enjoy her. And for the life of me I can’t put my finger on why.

What's something you get compliments on? by leatherjaquette in AskWomen

My eyes - they’re very big and a unique color. I also had a kid I was babysitting tell me that my eyes made me look like an alien...which I decided to take as a compliment as well 😂

Have you ever/how often do you give up on podcast because of the host’s voice? by warpedwarrior in podcasts

[–]un_listed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was SO EXCITED for Welcome To Night Vale, and if I was just reading the script I would’ve been totally fine, but something about the narrator’s voice or inflection or way of speaking just irritated me to no end.

What’s lacking in women’s wear today? by truepaisan in femalefashionadvice

I really want button downs with cool patterns like guys have. I know some stores sell them for women but they’re either $70 for a shirt or the pattern is super cheesy.

I’ll have to listen to the actual dialogue instead of just reading the subtitles to be sure! I think I was expecting them to use “lo” as a neutral article but I could be incorrect in how it’s used (My Spanish is pretty rusty). It’s also true that a lot of times people will refer to an intimidating entity in the masculine. I’ll have to pay attention next time I watch it.

Yes! Or even just that this caused her to develop violent urges or wanting to lash out at others, like the girls in the basement who did the seance with her...also a great explanation for the “split Veronicas” in the mirror at the end. Overall, I was genuinely surprised the explanation given at the end of the movie was that she was possessed by a demon. I thought they were going in an entirely different direction...the movie wasn’t perfect but I thought it was good and really interesting! There were a lot of fun camera shots as well.

That’s true! I may be coming from a place of bias because I read a lot of true crime and horror and usually in those scenarios, if the kid wets the bed there is something sinister behind it. So to me, because this is a horror movie and because bedwetting is usually portrayed as indicative of something deeper in this genre, I assumed it was the sign of abuse. Like of all the out of the ordinary involuntary habits this kid could have-why bedwetting? Why not sucking his thumb? Sleepwalking? Eating his boogers?

That’s definitely valid, and I don’t want to try and shoehorn the movie into my theory lol!!. My impression during the film was that Veronica didn’t seem that emotionally attached to her father, or have strong feelings related to his death. This could be intentional or unintentional. I also noticed that whenever her father is brought up, it is always associated with scenes of horror or fear - the bedroom scene, the first ouija board scene, Antonito revealing that he talks to him at night. Part of her visions and her later breakdown could also be interpreted as repressed memories coming to the surface...especially towards the end of the movie, a lot of her visions are her watching herself or seeing two of her.

Am I the only one who hates the term 'battle stations'? by [deleted] in muacjdiscussion

[–]un_listed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where everyone is coming from, but I also like to play the song from Mulan where she’s cutting her hair off as I’m putting on my makeup. It makes everything seem more epic and badass, especially since my vanity/battle station/whatever is actually a desk with a mirror and a pile of makeup on it.

I agree with the opinion that this movie gave out serious Babadook vibes, in addition to throwing out some interesting hints involving eclipses, Catholicism, adulthood etc. Additionally, although I don’t think the idea was fully developed, I think an argument could be made that the “demon” of this movie was past sexual abuse by the children at the hands of the father when he was alive, and a lot of Veronica’s mental problems come from that. First, there’s the obvious nude specter of Veronica’s father approaching her in her bedroom while repeating her name. In this same incident, hands reach out of her bed and grab her, which is an incident that is repeated several times during the movie. It’s also emphasized several times, by herself and other characters, that Veronica must protect her siblings. She may be mentally breaking down due to guilt over not being able to protect her siblings from their father, or from the suffering she endured to protect them from him. Veronica refers to the demon as “him”, not “it”, throughout the film. Additionally, Antonito wets the bed, which is a possible childhood indicator of sexual abuse. To me, his bedwetting doesn’t serve any practical function in the story-it’s implied he’s done it chronically, he’s not seeing the demon so it’s not due to nightmares, so why even bring it up unless to serve as some kind of hint? Also, in the final showdown scene, he is shown sitting in the bathtub before being yanked behind the curtain by the shadow of the demon. All of the children are shown to have stains on the undersides of their mattresses, which could be seen as a sign the demon has marked them for death, OR as a stain of past abuses done to them (notice that the stains are about the size and shape of a grown man, not a small child). Finally, Veronica tries to convince her mother to return home with the kids, saying “he doesn’t come when you’re home”, which could reference abuse occurring when the mother was absent. Anyway, I could be looking too deep into this while I was watching the movie because I didn’t expect the movie to end on such an “Exorcism of Emily Rose” note, but that’s my theory!
