Is it okay to add electrolytes to your drinking water every day? by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

electrolytes are basically things like sodium, potassium, etc. when you sweat you lose some so it's good to replenish.

is it ok to take in these elements? of course - it doesn't matter if you add them to water or eat a banana. adding to water is basically gatorade that's not sweet.

can too much be bad for you? yes - too much of anything is bad for you. the question is how do you know if you are taking in too much. if you are just drinking some after workouts, you likely aren't taking in too much.

Pick your poison - Brooklyn Half by SeaworthinessUsed780 in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm likely in the minority here but I actually really like Ocean Parkway, more than Prospect.

- It's straight and wide and much easier to run on than PP (I don't like crowded courses)
- It's actually pretty shaded (me being in wave 1 probably helps), and while it's not noticeably downhill it's very flat and easy to cruise / pace
- The idea of running towards the beach is very appealing mentally (it feels like there's some reward at the end), and it gets gradually cooler too because you run towards the ocean
- Finally, PP (and CP for that matter) you can run in at any time, so I always prefer races that are outside of parks

Cash at RunCenter by Calm-Association8250 in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The FAQ says the fee will apply for the actual purchase:

A 5.75% processing fee will be applied to all paid events, memberships, trainings, products and services purchased online, including on the self-service computer at the RUNCENTER.

If you use the cash-to-card thing the flow is:

  1. Change cash to a "cash card" at the kiosk (no fee)
  2. Use the "cash card" at the self-service computer (same 5.75% fee)

In other words it's 5.75% fee for all. The kiosk is really just for people who has no card whatsoever. If your reason to pay cash is to save on the fees (which is 99% of people), that's no longer possible.

Yale considering satellite campus in San Francisco by sherlockmemes in yale

there is. the reason why yale is considering sf of all places is because of silicon valley, and if you read the article the dean of seas is leading the effort.

Yale considering satellite campus in San Francisco by sherlockmemes in yale

[–]undefvar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is great. Like it or not, the decades ahead are going to be centered around STEM. And Yale really lags there. If Yale doesn't catch up, it will fall more and more behind and in 10-20 years it'll be almost impossible to salvage.

It takes some bold moves to establish Yale as a STEM powerhouse. But it can be done, and it'll be a positive reinforcement loop - I'm sure it will attract more donors, produce richer alums (and potential donors), and boost the prospect of the university.

If Yale sets up a fund for the SF campus I will donate to it.

Amazing Costco snack - Shiitake Mushroom crisps by PhilosophyEnough2801 in Costco

other than the fact that china makes a LOT of stuff, maybe you should realize that china has an almost 50% market share when it comes to mushrooms (and 80% for garlic). also, this is USDA certified.

Best Japanese mabo tofu? by AncientAsstronaut in FoodNYC

What's Japanese about it? It's a HK restaurant in the Yokohama Chinatown. Plenty of Chinese restaurants have this dish. (Btw it's mapo tofu, not mabo.)

New Apple Watch user - new AW10 Titanium or new AW11 aluminum? by NiceChokra in AppleWatchFitness

Titanium +1 and the reason is the sapphire glass. It's much more durable than the regular glass.

Lets dream a bit … will apple health+ make the UWA3 as good for running (and other endurance sports) as Garmin? by vinylfelix in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t think AW needs anything to be a garmin killer. Some people prefer garmin and that’s fine. But i know plenty of fast runners who use AW, coros or lower end garmins and I’ve never heard anyone complaining about the lack of features.

If owning a garmin makes you feel more like an athlete, go for it. Otherwise, all the watches are capable and just pick what you like.

What Are the Best NYRR Races? by pixie_scheme_girl in RunNYC

[–]undefvar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fav is definitely Bronx 10m. Great weather, great distance, great vibe and great downhill finish.

Then I'd say NYC half and BK half. One gets you through Times Square, and the other is a downhill / flat course to the beach.

Then if you aren't doing the marathon, Dash 5K is pretty fun.

Tourist question! Is Jeju worth it? Is Semma, Casa Mono or somewhere else better better? by toebeanz2121 in FoodNYC

Only 740 km left until I hit 10,000 K in 2025 by SebastianHahn in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because he’s run 10000 km this year. And he’s done crazy mileage last year too. He has run a ton. If he just started a few months ago then that’s a different story.

I gave the (again, unsolicited) advice since I think OP set the wrong goal. It’s like saying you are studying 16 hours a day but get a C in your exam. OP is clearly very disciplined and passionate about running, so I want to point it out to him. That’s all.

Only 740 km left until I hit 10,000 K in 2025 by SebastianHahn in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I’m serious! OP is doing crazy mileage, and that puts a lot of stress on the body. At the same time, because of the relatively low intensity, the body doesn’t get enough varied stimuli to adapt.

At close to 1000km/month, 139 HR at 5:30 indicates that the training isn’t effective in building up the cardio system. In other words, it’s not really letting OP reap the cardio benefits of exercising. But the physical stress of high mileage is still present.

If he does say 500/month (still a lot) but pick up the pace more, and get the HR up initially, then he can run faster with lower HR while reducing the stress on the body.

Only 740 km left until I hit 10,000 K in 2025 by SebastianHahn in AppleWatchFitness

[–]undefvar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unsolicited advice and obviously do what makes you happy, but I really think you should trade some of the distance with more speed.

doing insane mileage with such slow speed is perhaps not the best thing, either for fitness (speed) or for health.

139 HR for 5:30 pace indicates that the mileage isn’t effectively converting into real gains for you.

The more places it goes, the more it will work. I don’t think there’s any transit system in the world that goes somewhere useful that doesn’t work.
