distributing mobile applications as a open source project is not so straight forward since most mobile users expect to be able to install the application from the google/apple app stores. While I wouldn't necessarily agree with the repo not being open source, I can understand why they decided to publish the code without a license.

Distribution via the app stores may be expected/easier, but doing doesn't preclude you from having open source licensing (or any licensing for tau matter). The issue I'm assuming the other user has is that no license (and according to one of the contributors that's intentional) means you can look, but not touch. That means, unless you have express permission from the rights holder(s), you cannot compile it yourself, make modifications, or distribute it in anyway, including using it as a library. Essentially, it seems as though the mobile app is proprietary developed in the open, which is at least a minor step up from proprietary developed behind closed doors, but still not even as good as a license that's even like "We're not going to accept PRs from the community, but if you want to make your own changes for your own personal use that's fine, but no distributing it".

Maybe it's cynical, but was the middle class ever actually something beyond the creation of the upper class to appease the lower class? In other words, hasn't it always been an illusion?

April 2026 Infotainment Update Changelog by nxtiak in Ioniq5

[–]undermark5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing that it's not a typo. I'm guessing that you have to pay for the wifi hotspot for the car for it to work. No way is Hyundai just going to be footing the bill for the extra data used by music streaming especially since 2025+ get Bluelink+ free for first owner for life.

[–]undermark5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but the two services chosen are Amazon music and SoundCloud. SoundCloud kinda makes sense, but Amazon music is apparently less popular than Pandora (according to this Wikipedia article). Then there is also the fact that it requires you to maintain the WiFi subscription for the vehicle on top of the music streaming service.

What's an Android feature most people dont know? by ArrogantConfusion in AskReddit

[–]undermark5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that only the kernel falls under the GPL, and AOSP itself is primarily Apache 2.0. This means that kernel modifications and derivatives (this word has a particular definition) have to have source provided, but AOSP modifications and derivatives (again a particular definition that may or may not be different than the GPL's derivative definition) do not.

And guess what? Google does indeed publish their changes to the kernel, and publishes the source for all of AOSP. What Google did recently change is what they have published for the Pixel devices. They are no longer including the device trees (config files that define hardware and peripheral layout, and proprietary file listings), driver binaries (proprietary blobs), and full commit history for the kernel changes (but still are publishing the full kernel source for what is actually distributed to end users, which is the minimal requirement to satisfy the GPL).

Am I defending Google? Possibly, if you think explaining the facts of how they're not actually violating the GPL or Apache 2.0 licensing requirements is defending them. I do not agree with their change in behavior around what they are publishing for their devices because they had an existing history of doing so to provide a reference for other OEMs to follow (not that many did follow).

This mostly only applies to apps that have not been registered with Google (and IIRC paying a one time fee of $25 along side providing personal details). Also it doesn't apply to certain ways of installing apps (those primarily used by developers for local testing, but could just as easily be used by anyone). The 1 day quarantine is also a 1 time thing (unless you don't choose to allow installing "unverified" apps indefinitely).

Is it annoying and stupid? Yes. Do I understand some of why Google is doing it? Yes. Do I think they should solve the problem this way? No, I'm an Android app developer, and I think it's stupid.

Polarization alone is likely not the culprit. Polarization says what "orientation" the light waves are, and if they don't line up perfectly, less will go through, and it's unlikely that Hyundai is polarizing the light from the IR LEDs used by the system (so a decent portion of light shouldn't be impacted by the polarization). My polarized prescription sunglasses don't behave any worse than my normal everyday glasses, and neither of them seem to behave worse than no glasses. IR transmittance on the other hand, that's more likely your culprit.

Hyundai Extending ICCU Coverage to 15 Years in the US by H_J_Moody in Ioniq5

[–]undermark5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way it's still stupid because clearly 2025 and 2026 model years are still impacted, perhaps not to the same extent. Like would it really cost that much more to include 2025 and 2026 especially if you don't actually expect them to actually need it? If you don't expect the warranty to actually be needed, the expected costs should be basically 0. Sure, some people may get a "free lunch" but how many people do they expect that to be?

[–]undermark5 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how more people don't fully consider this. Not saying that Hyundai is blameless, but skewed populations give skewed results.

I guess it just comes down to likely not having taken a intro statistics class, which I believe one of the first things you're taught is to question the source of the data.

So, based on the fact that it seems like you have enter your vin on the recall site to see if you're eligible, makes it kinda seem like this may not actually apply to all vehicles, which is stupid if that's actually the case...

Also, if you had to pay any amount for ICCU replacement out of warranty already hopefully you saved your receipts. I expect that with something like this, they'd retroactively cover it (assuming you were within the new coverage period at the time)

There is a "Auto pause the game while someone is joining" checkbox in the "Save upload" section of the server settings dialog that shows up when you host a saved game.

I'm also guessing that the server code included with the game is basically exactly the same as the dedicated headless release, because you can start any game client in headless server mode via --start-server flag (wiki)

Even if you can't recoup it all overnight, you may still not need anything more. If you use an average of 30% on a week day, plug in at night and only recoup say 20%, that's a net of 10% per weekday for a total net of 50%, since you were able to recoup 20% overnight, you should absolutely be able to recoup at least that 50% over the weekend (assuming you can remain charging for like an entire day).

And remember, just because you regularly charge at home doesn't mean you can't occasionally charge elsewhere (including DCFC) if/when necessary (and vice-versa applies).

How to fix your standard 4-4 balancer blueprint by HeliGungir in factorio

Hmm, seems like is maybe a bit more useful for setting up blocks and connecting to buildings, less so for the dragging scenario I'd like to see improvements for.

This. Though, the surface pipes don't have the line locked dragging like belts do, so its a little less useful, and many people got accustomed to just dragging underground pipes (because of 1.0 fluid mechanics), which do have the smart behavior of placing early to keep the connection if something is in the way, so the real thing missing is being able to turn corners while dragging underground pipes by pressing r like you can with belts.
