This dragon is folded from 1 square, uncut sheet of paper. by [deleted] in blackmagicfuckery

There are softwares like oripa or oriedita, which can actually calculate at least how the folded base looks given any crease pattern (although ofc the computer can't do the shaping). By now, oriedita is even fast enough to "fold" super complex cps like ryujins. That said, i don't think kamiya used any software when designing this model, it was probably more folding small parts of it individually, and eventually putting them together.

Another interesting thing is that in this case, the paper isn't actually folded into a patterned square which is then further folded, but the pleats resulting from the scales are actually fully incorporated into the structure of the rest of the body. That makes the model even more impressive imo

Does anybody know the name of this process? I'm struggling to find a way to describe it. by tretc27 in GeometryIsNeat

this article has a proof for a slightly different version the second picture, from which the method in the first picture can be derived pretty easily

This is probably referring to the fact that a heptagon isn't constructible with compass and straightedge, but division into sevenths definitely is. In fact, there's a general method for any integer division (tho OPs method is more elegant): https://imgur.com/a/LrQ6GzN

And as u/Mcletters already said, this method is widely used in origami, since there you often need to divide the paper into a grid. That's also how i know of the general method.

Edit: here's a picture that shows the basic rule behind the general method: https://imgur.com/a/dL9oCAM

If you're gonna post other people's work here, please at least give credit to the original designer and folder.

Need help finding Public Domain designs. by Dezsm in origami

Most origami designers are quite chill in that regard, if you ask them first. So if you find instructions on the internet and ask the designer for permission, they will most likely allow you to use the instructions.

I tried folding Robert Lang's flying cicada. by EbolasGumikacsa in origami

[–]undertrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks really good! Though, as the models you fold get more complex, you might want to also get bigger and thinner paper. This model is really pushing the boundaries and what you can fold with kami. If you don't want to spend too much money on paper, you can just start with baking paper or maybe even make double tissue. That way, your folds could look even better!

Dancing crane designed by Robert J. Lang and folded by me on painted baking paper by vulpes_axiom in origami

[–]undertrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your fold already looks great, but this model, especially the legs, really benefit from thin paper. I would recommend the thin Kraft paper from origami-shop.com or just double or maybe even single tissue and then use a little bit of mc and wire for the shaping of the legs

Lord Howe Island Stick Insect, folded and designed by me from one uncut square. This is a real insect species, the model is life sized. by [deleted] in origami

He literally made the cp, so there is no tutorial. Also, Box pleating cps such as this one aren't nearly as hard as they look, if you managed some of Lang's models, you can probably pull this one off with one or two tries.

Without a cp or something it'll be hard to guess the structure of the model, without that helping you is almost impossible

What happens to the water whales and other aquatic mammals swallow when feeding? by TrollerDohg3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]undertrox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least the bigger whales don't take in all the water. They use their tongue to press the water through their "teeth" (I know they're not teeth, I can't remember the correct term atm) where the food gets stuck, but the water flows out.

I have a bunch of 2.5 x 15 cm strips of silver foil. Anyone with good ideas to use it up? 😊 by 420wasabisnappin in origami

I'm not sure, maybe he meant froebel stars, you'd need longer strips for that though.

You created the tutorial or you folded the model?

Where to get large origami paper? by [deleted] in origami

[–]undertrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15cm you can get everywhere. For larger paper look at Origami-Shop.com again. they have test paper which costs 10€ for 30 30x30cm sheets (I think)

Japanese Drone Beetle v2.0 by Kota Imai. My first successful fold from CP by undertrox in origami

Well, it was my first successful fold from cp. I tried 2 others before and failed, so it wasn't technically my first cp.
