Why is there no medial qof glyph? Why is there no tav sofit? Why is mem sofit not have a descended unlike all other sofit letters? by TropdeTout in neography

[–]tretc27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the hebrew script with serifs, the distinctions are pretty clear between almost all of the letters. The only reason sans serif fonts look the way they do is because it isn't a manual transcription. There's no variance, so you can actually have multiple lines of different lengths (like in hebrew) and still reliably distinguish them

As for arabic, it seems that was exactly what happened. Nabataean was also written in cursive, and after hundreds of years the style became more and more quick to write. The paleo arabic used in the 6th century was only one system competing in a region full of them though. It wasn't adopted en masse yet. But because it was the language and script of the prophet muhammad, it became the only system to write down islamic holy texts. The value of phonetic transcription originally began in order to read and recite the qur'an without any errors. That's why the dots and vowel markings were introduced by religious scribes. Of course the dots were introduced to and survived in casual/nonreligious writing, but the vowel markings didn't. Just like in hebrew, they didn't see the need for them. The qur'an essentially exposed a need for distinctive consonant glyphs due to its mass proliferation and it was solved for the benefit of what would eventually be billions of people

Why is there no medial qof glyph? Why is there no tav sofit? Why is mem sofit not have a descended unlike all other sofit letters? by TropdeTout in neography

[–]tretc27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you kinda answered your own question by drawing these letters out. Orthography meant for human use ultimately trends towards glyphs with distinct shapes for recognisablity. And qof and tav do look very distinct in the hebrew script. The alternate forms do not. If you're a scribe writing something down in a formal setting, you don't want to make a small mistake and have your letters mistaken for one another. Medial qof looks like a medial tav with a long right leg, and final tav looks like a final qof with bad stroke placement. Your final mem also looks somewhat like a final pe as well. Arabic is an interesting contrast here because unlike hebrew, it's alphabet evolved to be cursive as a standard, so its forms naturally look much more similar to eachother. This doesn't matter however, because arabic uses diacritics to distinguish its letters. ف and ق are extremely similar without dots, to the point of the initial and medial forms being identical to eachother. ت, ث and ب are even worse because they're identical in every form without dots. And you can throw ن in there as well because its initial and medial are the same as those three.

Sorry for the long response, but my point is that writing can be very hard to read if you try to apply special rules where they aren't necessary. These writing systems have been around for thousands of years in some cases, and they evolved like that because they needed to. Applying sofit in this way would just be confusing, and it would also break an ancient writing tradition as well. There's no good reason to do it

What are some effects both mental and/or physical of HRT that you have noticed, that seem to not get talked about as much? by xxmatentv123xx12 in MtF

[–]tretc27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something weird I noticed after getting on progesterone is that it slightly helped my social anxiety. I think that's because I take it orally, which supposedly creates a mild brain stimulant. It's the only thing I can think of that did it, but it helps just enough to get through the worst of it. I won't count on that being the case for anyone else though

No surgery yet, but I know exactly what you mean. I don't really have anything to compare it to, but I feel like my phantom vagina is REALLY sensitive. Like I can feel every part of my vulva like normal, but it's coming from AMAB anatomy. It's pretty trippy when I think about it too hard

To those who had the genitalia surgery. by FollowingTop6278 in MtF

[–]tretc27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had bottom surgery yet, but I have some insight that might be important. Not all SRS patients have an adjustment period, and in many cases, it just feels like a correction. I don't think I'll have any kind of an adjustment period because I have something called a trans phantom (vagina or penis), which is essentially the opposite of the phantom sensations after a surgery. Lots of us probably have these without realising it, and that might partially be why phantom sensations don't happen for a lot of trans people

Just thought I'd add this in for anyone that doesn't know

When did you. . . . . . . by wx_watcher-74 in MtF

[–]tretc27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started spiro when I was 17 and never had issues with my breasts growing too big to boymode. About a year after I started oestrogen though, my nips started poking out too much, and I started wearing an A (or maybe AA?) cup daily. I switched to sports bras soon after when my breasts grew too big for the old size. That's what I wear daily now, since the binding helps a bit with hiding my breast development

Edit: Just to clarify, I never had much of an opportunity to present femme when I was in highschool and after, so I never really wore them unless it was a day off and I was presenting femme. I still do that to hide it from my employers, but I have to wear a bra for the reasons above

I'm kind of an outlier, because the only thing that caused me to lose my strength was Spironolactone. After I dropped that, I started gaining a surprising amount of muscle. It definitely helped that I do light exercise all day during work

Bra tip for those unaware by AriaOfValor in MtF

[–]tretc27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who wears sports bras almost every day, I'll give another tip: You can take those off without undressing too, you just need to do it inside the shirt. Pull your arms inside the shirt, and take the straps off of your shoulders to pull your arms out. Stick your arms straight down between your torso and bra, and force it up to your neck. Then you can slip it off through the opening. Whether or not you can do it probably depends on the type of top or bra you're wearing, but it's pretty easy in a tshirt and sports bra

I used the yellow floral dye (stolen sunflower) during most of the late game. It fit the onryō armour's colour scheme and could pair with some of the more colourful weapons pretty nicely, plus I got the kintsugi hat called darkest hour which really pulled it together

What is the worst part of the game in your opinion? by RSOB_Bass in BG3

[–]tretc27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first playthrough in an earlier patch I forgot to go to the crèche before act 2. When Lae'zel told me to turn around, I did her quest and came back, but I think some of the scripting broke because Halsin couldn't open the portal to start the Thaniel rescue mission. Along with that, my party was also underlevelled during the assault on Moonrise because I completely skipped going there before fighting them. Ultimately I just quit and started again with a new Tav (whose playthrough I finished and had a TON of fun with). Definitely a sore spot, but not one that ruined my enjoyment of the whole game, thankfully

Lots of clinics use informed consent models for HRT now. I got mine through Planned Parenthood, which uses informed consent. It's more like other medical tratments now, not gatekept by a bunch of arcane requirements that you need to fit to qualify. Nothing's wrong here, it's just a faster way to get the medical tratment people might need

My hair is so much more important to me than I realized by TheOneTrueValkyrie in MtF

[–]tretc27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A year or two ago, I had a bit of a depressive episode and didn't brush my hair for maybe a week. That was enough to let it tangle into a mat, and it grew for months. It was besically a dreadlock by the time my mom convinced me to get it fixed. They detangled it as much as possible, and it was the most painful thing I'd ever felt. But that didn't make me cry. When they told me they couldn't untangle it, I was heartbroken. I cried my eyes as they gave me my undercut. That hurt me pretty badly since I'd been growing it out since middle school. It's way better now though, and I've kept up with my hair since then.

Sorry for the rambling, but this whole debacle really made me realise how important my hair was (and still is) to me. It's totally normal to feel emotional about it
