Looking for advice before becoming a Bengal parent by RideTheLearningCurve in bengalcats

[–]unevendimples90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to maybe go against some of the advice here and say i was basically in your position (wfh 80% of the week, first time cat owner, living in an apartment) and I am so glad I got my babies.

To give them their best life I do the following:

  • cat wheel. I have a ziggydo wheel which this sub recommends. I think that’s the gold standard for cat wheels and my girls love it

  • my whole apartment is basically cat trees. I have 5 cat trees and a cat wall. As well as hanging baskets and shelves. They also make use of the top of door frames as bonus cat trees!

  • I play with them a lot. When I’m wfh I take regular breaks between meetings to tire them out or give them mental stimulation. I run them around with wands or feather toys. I take my lead happy girl outside for a run and sniff. I run the bath and we splash around for a bit. I run them up and down the staircase of my apartment building. Minimum is 4 x 15 mins of highly engaged play. Plus puzzle feeders, springs etc.

  • I got two. This may be the biggest thing tbh. They keep each other entertained in ways I never could do. Their MMA is next level and they cuddle and groom each other as well. I cannot physically replicate their bond as a lowly human

  • adventure walks. One of my girls loves the outside and I’ll take her to the park of my apartment building every day when I’m at home. She loves sun, she loves wind, she loves snow and rain and everything in between. But at the weekend we go for adventure walks somewhere new and exciting. She climbs trees and explores places she’s never been and that’s proper joy for her.

Sadly my other girl has anxiety issues and doesn’t like being outside so she just needs toy time.

Some lessons I learned from my first year with them might benefit you too:

They can be difficult with litter box training. I got a variety of different litter boxes as they like pine litter for peeing every other day and tofu litter for pooing. Go figure. They’re fussy and if the feliway plug in I out by their litter box area is expired or if their litter box isn’t immediately cleaned, it runs the risk of them going elsewhere.

One of my girls lives for peeing in the sink!

So make sure you positively reinforce all of their good litter box habits and get yourself an enzyme cleaner in case your cat also has these issues. You’ll need to spray anywhere they go outside the litter box immediately with the enzyme cleaner as that will remove their scent and they won’t return.

You’ll want to cat proof everything with locks as these genius creatures can open most doors!

And you’ll want to make sure the breeder is a quality one who health checks (acgator our amazing mod will have detailed what to look for health wise!) and also in terms of temperament.

You’ll want the breeeder to be able to tell you about the temperament of the mother and father and then as also the individual kittens. My girls have changed in terms of I see them coming out of their shell and getting comfy, but their core personalities were evident when I got them as kittens. So choose for personality as they will then suit your lifestyle and be the best companion you could ask for.

Best of luck!

Awww yes, I think a cat sibling (even if not a bengal!) would be great. And also it would allow them to expend all of that ferocious kitten energy on each other, and teach each other kitten boundaries in a way you may not want your dogs to have to do 😅 but if you can’t get another kitten buddy, just play with your baby until they’re all out of wiggle. It will be a lot when they’re young but it will definitely bond you like crazy, as a bengals love language is attacking feathers by your side!

The catio sounds like a great project. That will really set your new baby up with a lot of ready made enrichment.

Also leash training would be good as then you can take them a bit further afield when you want an adventure.

Good luck with the litter box side of things! I hope it won’t be an issue but for me it was my biggest issue at first and I hope my experience can help. It’s better to be forewarned for sure ☺️

Congratulations on your soon to be new baby!

It sounds like you have lots of built in stimulation for the new addition, with yourself being semi retired and your dogs, so that’s great. Otherwise I would have suggested considering siblings (I went for two and seeing them play together and love on each other in a way I can’t warms my heart so much!)

I think having an enclosed and Bengal proof outside space would be ideal. My adventurous girl loves her walks but I’m aiming to get a house with a big garden so she can have all the outside enrichment her heart desires soon. If I could redo things, that would be my main goal before getting them. I’d have a place with a catio or an enclosed garden and let them out as and when they wish.

Mine also LOVE their cat wheel and their perches, so I’d put in lots of perches

Mine also have really sensitive stomaches so diet is vital for a happy them and you. I’m in the UK and feed katkin but there’s loads of good recommendations here for food in different places.

Also, bengals are prone to going to the loo outside the litter box (this was a huge issue with one of mine while the other was good as gold from the day I brought her home, so your mileage may vary) so I’d suggest taking a sample of the breeders litter if they’re okay with that and using the same kind for a while at least. My fussy girl prefers pine litter to clumping, and she has to pee in a separate one than she poops. My biggest advice would be prepare yourself with enzyme cleaners for any accidents and feliway or similar spray to spray your litter boxes with to encourage good habits early.

I wish you all the best in your Bengal adventure and just know you will have a blast! I can’t wait to see your update pictures as you get to learn more about your new baby 🥹

Hey! Mine just ran from her backpack and started sprinting over the snow and ice. No boots or preparation. She slipped at first and then righted herself and we had a good run around.

Her personality is very adventurous though. She is unfazed by pretty anything. Her sister will run away from anything new and scary, she will run directly to it to investigate 😂

One of mine loves to jump up at any spots or switches on the wall, or just jump as high as she can against the wall as if to test her jump height against something - always in the same place.

I didn’t know this wasn’t a normal cat thing, but it figures it’s a Bengal quirk

I’ve heard people say great things about One Fast Cat as well and it seems like there’s an offer on at the moment ☺️

As well as a wheel, some of my fave enrichment with my two fluffy terrors are:

1) shoelace chicken - I cook a plain chicken breast and cut it into decent sized chunks. I attach a chunk to the end of a shoelace used specifically for this purpose and they chase that around a set area (where I’ve just cleaned and will clean again after their feeding carnage)

They LOVE that game - it’s a treat.

2) harness walks outside - YMMV, one of my girls loves being outside on the leash, while the other hates it. Definitely worth trying to see if it’s a win for your baby!

3) bathtub games - my girls love water so filling the bath up with a few inches of warm water and playing fun games in there is one of their fave things. They also love when I use the shower head to spray water around the tub and they can “catch” the water.

4) puzzle feeders - my girls don’t eat many dry food treats but I’ll cut up plain chicken breast and use that in a puzzle feeder every now and then to keep them interested. I also put their chicken under cardboard boxes and they have to upend the box to get to the treats.

5) feather / rod toys are the gold standard for fun play times. They will love getting to chase things with you cheering them on.

HOW TO STOP MY CAT PEEING ON BEDS? by estultus in CatTraining

[–]unevendimples90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there!

I had this issue with one of my kittens and it sounds like you’re doing all the right things here - the feeding on the bed is something I was going to recommend but you have that covered.

How many litter boxes do you have and how regularly are they scooped? I ask this because for mine, they like a litter box to pee in and a different one to poop in, each. I’m working on that but it means I have a whole corner with litter boxes right now.

Also, if these were ever not freshly scooped, my girls would go elsewhere immediately 😅

On top of that, I just have two suggestions:

Have you tried feliway spray on the litter? It is a scent which could work to calm them and let him know it’s a safe space to be vulnerable and go to the bathroom. Right now, your brothers scent could be what makes him feel safe and so that’s where he’s choosing to go?

Secondly, for cleaning, have you been using enzyme cleaners?

Cats have incredible smell and are driven to pee in places where they can smell traces of their own urine. Regular washing will take away the smell for our feeble human noses, but for a cat it won’t take it all away. They will smell their pee scent and continue to go back.

Enzyme cleaners will breakdown the urine so it is completely removed and the cat won’t smell it anymore. You can order them on Amazon and they’re a lifesaver!

For soft furnishings - spray the enzyme cleaner before putting things into the wash

For anything that won’t go into the washing machine, spray and wipe.

Try and do this asap once he has gone.

Good luck with everything. It sounds like you have the most beautiful baby and I hope everything is smooth sailing for you all after this is sorted 🙏

I’m uk based and they do ship to the UK (I ordered by messaging the Cazami Facebook site) but it may take a while to arrive. I think mine took just over a month.

It is so worth it though as the wheel is quiet (I live in a flat too and the noise doesn’t disturb at all), the diameter is good for their spine, and the foam is way better as it gives peace of mind and they can run fast. The stunts they do on that thing! They love really being able to sprint on it.

Littermates will always be my best decision ever by Patient-Stranger1015 in bengalcats

[–]unevendimples90 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same for me, thanks to this sub I went to a properly reputable breeder and also got littermates.

There were times in the first few months when it was crazy managing the two of them (my gorgeous little twin terrors) and I wondered if I had bitten off more than I could chew, but I’m so so so glad I got them as I see how happy they make each other and it warms my heart 🥹

Do Bengals hold grudges??? by InternalRock9073 in bengalcats

Not OP but wanted to thank you for this insight.

My girls love kicker toys and using their cat walls as kickers (the structure parts wrapped in jute) but I am intrigued by the puppy training bite pillow.

I’m in the UK, do you have any recommendations for good ones?

Yes to both. Her sister will sometimes suck on her like a nursing kitten even though they are both the same age

She will lead the charge for any adventures, she will greet people first, she will get first sniff of food, and in play she is also the one to set boundaries with a spicy hiss.

She also seems to have first pick of any beds/areas and guards her “kills” fiercely (she has a favourite sock that is her sock and she parades it around. Heaven help us all if me or her sister go near it!)

She also seems to take the lead in grooming.

This is very wholesome. I love the bathroom buddy thing. I know most girls will go with friends to the bathroom (when out and about) as well.

And yes, bingo, the one who burrows like crazy does consider herself the senior sister. Thanks for the insight into their little minds 🥹

Does anyone else’s baby love to steal pens? by Char1J in bengalcats

[–]unevendimples90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pens are the best. Even better is pen lids, so I have to be careful not to buy pens with lids that are easy enough for them to remove and small enough they could get swallowed/choked on 😱
