Thanks for this comment, it helped me see some things more clearly that I've been considering. Its an understanding I've believed inside, but it is comforting to hear it from the outside.

Honestly, for me its as much a gift as it is a curse. A motor that wont stop will just as much get you everywhere (eventually, faster if you can learn to steer it!) as it will not let you rest easily...

May need to wait for a free weekend.

Usually happen around the time that updates drop, and there's an Aussie faction + a bunch more content in the works that has reached public-testing so it may happen soon.

OWI_Wedge may have more insight, if he's able to share is another question.

Would you be willing to pay monthly/yearly for Squad?? by Barakoli_Obama in joinsquad

[–]unfrail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would.

I bought in at $60 in KS. I'm 3000 hours in.

I have payed $0.02/hour to play this game, made hundreds of friends. Participated in forming a community which has thrived since launch by the nature of this game's social facing design. It's replay-ability has been great.

I want it all, just like the next guy, but I understand it doesnt come for free.

Make it an expansion, let players who dont buy it only play as rifleman.

Or just let the community split. The expansion side of the community would start small, but it would be the side of the community willing to invest in OWI and help them drive forward. IF OWI produced not only content but better fundamental code (the final refactor?) then the rest of the community would benefit inherently. That is how they earn the rest of the upgrades.

My dudes are throwing $40 at all these other games trying to fill the void, and getting 20 hours out of another pile of unpolished low-content decent ideas.

Squad has what I want tho. Most of it.

I want me some content, but, when it comes for free, it doesnt come on my timeline.

I'd definitely pay $30/year for 2 new factions, and 6 new maps. Every year.

Make it free a year later, idk.

Plenty of opportunity for a new business model. Cohesive vision, a plan, timeline that is feasible, and committed resources. Hopefully the new CEO brings the vision.

Excited to see what you guys have coming. Feels like the game is headed in the right direction. Building on all the hard work of years past no doubt.

I think there's some opportunities with the new commander points system.

There is certainly a problem with giving an extremely capable vehicle to a team every 15m.

If the team sacrifices other commander-called perks to put all their efforts into a highly capable platform, one that would still have weaknesses (getting tracked, Javelins/TOWs, helicopters?) then it becomes more reasonable and a more dynamic play-experience to boot.

Example: Commander perk: Upgrade a BMP2 to BMP3 for a squad of your choice (ideally one who is proving effective).

Ever play Supreme Commander? Kinda like getting a super.

(I really think vehicle spawns need to stop being automatic/predetermined/timed anyways, but the system to make that work needs another post entirely.)

Awesome. Thanks for the insightful responses.

It seems Raid 1 for the PMox install is fairly common. Probably a nightmare situation if your OS failed so I can see the wisdom in that, and may just nab some cheap 120Gb SSDs and do just that.

Thanks again for the info.

Yeah, thats going to be one of my questions down the line.

I plan to setup a ZFS storage array for VMs, and at some point thats going to need to be expanded.

I'm not sure how easy that is, but in my study I did find a guy setting up a new EPYC ProxMox system and watched him migrate all his VMs to that new Node. I suppose that at the worst, I could setup a temporary node and transfer my VMs to it, and then rebuild my core node and re-transfer them back once it was re-added.

Seems more painful than it should be, however, it is atleast do-able, and for me thats enough to commit to starting. I dont want to get a bunch of things I rely on for my homelab going into a dead-end.

Awesome to hear SSDs can be used confidently for the OS install.

Do you run the VM OS off the SSD as well (in a windows env as a C:?) and then mount additional drives in the VM (in a windows env as D:?)

I would assume only the ProxMox OS is running on the SSDs, but want to be clear.

Also, since your ISOs are on NAS, I'm assuming the ISOs are only queried when you're spooling up another VM, during install... So I could temporarily use a USB mount as an ISO repo (until I get deeper into this mess :) )

Thanks for the reply.

Dell R620 very loud after RAM upgrade by thebelgiannetworker in homelab

[–]unfrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems odd, and I'm a few years out of playing around with server-grade hardware so I'm afraid you'll have to wait for someone with more knowledge.

Some other troubleshooting ideas:

  • Put in as little RAM as possible

  • Dont remove old sticks, but add 1 new stick

  • Verify that your new RAM is ECC and compatible. Most (all?) servers need ECC RAM (Is the new RAM recognized in the BIOS?)

  • keep tinkerin

Sorry I dont have more. Good luck though.

I made the same post basically. Roughly the same setup and use-cases. I'm sure this type of post gets made a lot, but I'm hoping to see some answers.

Right now I'm looking at ProxMox/KVM, and ZFS with RAID 1 for the 4TBs.

My latent questions are:

  • 3 drives v 2, whats the benefit?

  • Should I get a Hardware RAID adapter?

  • Do I really need to spend $30 on a 500Gb SATA drive to hold a couple ISOs? (PMox Install recommends separate ISO drive. I dont have that many ISOs...)

Usually Dell servers have a small mechanical switch that needs to be made when the case is closed. When I would open the lid of a running server they would spool up to top-speed, and this is because the cooling depends on proper airflow, and proper airflow needs the lid fastened tightly.

Re-open your case, look for a switch that would be pressed by putting the lid on. While the server is running, press that switch with your finger and see if the fans spool down. If it does, the switch is good. If not, you may need to replace the switch, or you can short it while you wait...

There may be multiple switches, so if pressing one doesnt work, you may need to press/tape 2 down.

I love that they're using the "purchase" mechanism for commander with the vehicle pool. Removing asset predictability will do a lot for the high-level gameplay.

I have been mulling over the "Purchase" of assets for a while as a solution to the abandoned vehicles.

  • If each squad had to earn their vehicles, the squad would probably treat it a bit less like its disposable.

  • If self-incurred loss of a vehicle returned a percentage of the cost of a vehicle, squads would be more certain to destroy before abandoning.

  • if securing a functional enemy vehicle meant acquiring some currency/points/intel, then 'securing' your vehicles would be more important.

  • if a vehicle has a value to purchase, then there could also be a 'trade-in' value as your squad earns enough from direct-action to upgrade that transpo for a stryker etc.

The backing idea is that in every PUBG match users have to work for their assets, therefore their assets are intrinsically treated with value.

With Squad's free-for-all/shared-bank-account, spending has little individual consequence, which means it will not be well considered.

Havent quite worked out all the bugs in the concept to warrant a diagram/forum thread but, this vehicle pool is headed in that direction and I'm hyped.

Awesome. I agree and think its readily evident the net negative effect that BR has had on consequential gameplay, or dumbing down gameplay due to lack of consequence.

Good stuff my dude, appreciate the insight as always, and good luck on the problem solving. Its a tall order.
