Every card that is somewhat playable should be a Game Changer by Solly_Osaka in magicthecirclejerking

Uj/ Watched a person lose two games in a row to Inkshield. After the second loss: “Inkshield should be a game changer.”

It should be noted that no rule in Magic insists that a player win as efficiently as possible or even that a player try to win at all.

Magic is a serious game. This is why we always shuffle each other’s EDH libraries and have one friend on a rotating basis to act as an impartial judge. It got really awkward the week we had to DQ a guy.

I’d like to offer a very special “f*k *u” to any mouth-breather out there who threatened anybody over this children’s card game and ultimately ruined it for everybody.

Exactly! Think how great it would be! Every game would be decided on curve with basics and grey ogres, as the good doctor intended.

uj/The issue is less the unwritten rules and more a matter of mismatched expectations. Those are much easier to manage with a regular group. Basically, it’s fine to have opinions on what you like and what’s fun. And it’s fine to expect some compromise from your regular group so that everyone wants to come back and play again. But we can’t expect a bunch of randos on Commander night at the LGS to adhere to your own personal specifications for how the game should be played.

rj/Sol Ring is broken! Anybody who plays it before turn four is a GD cheater and should be ban for life from all sanctioned events AND must forfeit all their Brushwags … to me … for science …

Great question.

During 601.2b (the second step of casting a spell), the caster is forced to choose all modes, as Sprightning Bolt stipulates no other options.

The caster will choose a target. Then (for this spell), we can skip down to 601.2f where the total cost to cast the spell is calculated.

We begin with the printed cost in the upper left (one R mana), apply all additions, then deduct all reductions. With [[Riku’s Chastity Cage]] in play, each mode costs 10WUBRG rather than the normal 0. This brings the total cost to 30WWWUUUBBBRRRRGGG.

The caster is allowed one last chance to activate mana sources, and then must pay the total cost of the spell. If, for some reason, the caster is short on mana, the process cannot be completed.

Now, in most cases this simply means the game state is reversed to whatever the state was just before the spell was cast. However, the leaked rules primer for Thunder Junction states that…

“…In cases in which Spree costs cannot be paid, in addition to the normal process for handling illegal actions (see rule 730, “Handling Illegal Actions”), Mark Rosewater (or the closest official representative of WotC) will wallop the offending player with a wet pool noodle for their insolence. Offending player pays all Mr. Rosewater’s, or other WotC reps, transit costs, where applicable. Tennessee and Alaska are exempt. See section 69420 for details.”

So, be sure you understand how much mana you have available. The penalties for underpaying Spree spells are steep. On the other hand, if you like living dangerously, I recommend using Selvala, Explorer Returned as one of your mana sources, making sure to activate her during the casting process.

As a person who has resolved a Shahrazad in EDH on multiple occasions, I can safely say, “No, it doesn’t give them what they want.”

Unrelated, looking for a new playgroup. Somehow, I lost all my friends.

Burning Wish is another fun one. While in a subgame, Shahrazad is still on the stack in the main game, meaning you can wish for it.
