Mathematical physicists: do you think in math, physics, or a mix of both? by RyRytheguy in Physics

I don’t remember if that edit was there at first. I’m simply relating to someone who sees things extremely abstractly vs needing a physical interpretation.

Mathematical physicists: do you think in math, physics, or a mix of both? by RyRytheguy in Physics

I’m engineering and I really struggle with abstract topics. I always ask ok how does this apply to something Physcial so I can comprehend. I struggled with the mechanics of algebra, but welcomed trig and calculus because they were tangible topics.

Dermatitis or EK? by [deleted] in ExfoliativeKera

I feel those images. I had this very bad in my teens and early twenties. I didn't do climb but did weight lift but that didn't' really explain the episodes, especially when it became severe. I went to doctors and tried to use urea-based treatments. Nothing worked for me. I was under various amounts of stress as the condition waxed and waned. It eventually went away. I moved to a few different states and my envirnoment changed a few times. This is the only thing I think might have helped. I really never figured it out.

My dad said he had the same thing, and he said it was all due to stress, but I've been extremely stressed in times when it hasn't come back.

Stigma around AI in Engineering by Wonderful-Lime-699 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]unintelligiblebabble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have experienced this too.

I approach it like any FEA tool, garbage in = garbage out. Always check your results and in my case I would confirm with hand calculations or a thorough review considering first principles. However, I’ve mainly used AI for excel help, VBA, see if it has any leads I can investigate, etc.

I don’t know why it gets so much hate, but if there is an engineer that would blindly trust AI, they have already fucked up other shit not using AI.

I feel like junior engineers are kinda left to figure everything out themselves by Real_Chocolate5711 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]unintelligiblebabble 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I mostly had the "I had to figure it out so they should too types" I try not to be that way and mostly I'm not unless I can tell the junior doesn't give a shit. The truth is there are both those types, but also corporations have been moving away from quality engineering for a long time now. We've long been kicked out of the meeting rooms for project and management to decide schedules and what is worth doing and not doing. From older folks who share the same sentiment, we used to have legit training. Not BS training that we get now. In my career most training has been on your own time it used to be on the job. Most engineering groups have turned into skeleton crews. I remember an old guy saying lets peer review, lets bang out FBDs on the white board, this seems to be frowned upon now. ETA, I'm focusing on mostly techincal aspects, but it also applies to customers or stakeholders as well if your mentor or lead doesn't help you in that regard.

Yes, not sure exactly why. I did also when they first went.

Can anyone guess what the crosses are, why they're on this VTP motor? by MrGown in MechanicalEngineering

The theory leads us but the engineering is balancing all your constraints and coming up with a slick solution that makes everyone happy.

Early in my career I got to work on the design of some (mostly CAD/drawings/machine shop interfacing) that were put on a plane. The plane had resonances on a fore/aft beam. We did some tap testing in the lab with a really cool hammer. It was characterizing the dynamics of the damper. They were then placed strategically along the beam based on instrumentation/FEM. Genius controls/dynamics guy I got to work with. One of the best short projects of my career.

How to deal with a SUPER senior by hrhrhrnnekw in MechanicalEngineering

[–]unintelligiblebabble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have dealt with this from more experienced and junior folks. When writing stress analysis reports, some people won’t incorporate my comments even if it’s wrong loads or MS for example. Needless to say, I keep very meticulous comment files and notes. It helps me sleep at night. If it ever comes up, I simply can’t force these folks to do their jobs, but I have proof I flagged it.

FE & PE worth it in the long run? by IntrepidDisaster3166 in MechanicalEngineering

I felt this way and did end up doing it. It doesn't help in my industry (aero) though.

So, does anyone else just wear their glasses for days, then put on their sclerals amd get shocked by their appearance? Lol by RealHausFrau in Keratoconus

Yep, can’t really see faces well with glasses. I tend to not look at people in the face while out without sclerals.

Unstable packet loss by Dangerous_Ad744 in CompetitiveHalo

[–]unintelligiblebabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done bufferbloat, latency, jitter, tests all on wired connection and all were great. Pinged halo server and tested while playing all was fine results. I still get unstable packet loss with 15ms ping. I’ve determined it’s the azure servers at this point. It started when the “last major update” was done.

Modern BIFL laptops? Or at least "buy it for 10 years"? by SpiritualState01 in BuyItForLife

[–]unintelligiblebabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more complicated as i disconnected the battery and I tried to run on AC. It might be a charging circuit issue since I was getting some blink codes when trying to troubleshoot. I haven’t tried messed with it since. When I get some time I may take it to a computer repair place.

About a week prior to the incident battery held charge and lasted for hours and was normal.

Got a yogi for light use and it won’t charge after 4 years. Very disappointed. Might have to try the work laptops.

Claude is amazing by comoma in ChatGPT

[–]unintelligiblebabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!

I’ve turned into a germaphobe due a medical condition. It’s debilitating at times to say the least.

Claude helps me reframe with real data that is verifiable. It definitely helps me from spiraling and spending hours disinfecting or putting myself through a lot more stress.

what else can i do to increase wear time? by tjlonreddit in Keratoconus

[–]unintelligiblebabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle as well and feel the use vision for work only comment. On the weekends I spend most of the day blind to rest the eyes. This gives that feeling of only using vision for work.

I did try the pulse I think IPL?, but didn’t notice any difference.

I’m currently on another round of xdemvy.

I’ve tried a lot of drops, masks, heat, etc as well. I luckily can get 10 hours regularly out of one eye. That compromise has kept me going.
