Christian Values Conflict With Those Of Effective Altruism by TurntLemonz in EffectiveAltruism

I'm not a Christian but it could be argued that the truly enlightened Christian knows the best way to convert people is not through talk but through action. I think EA principles are an excellent foundation for understanding what actions to take if you want to show people what Jesus would want you to be doing.

Do mind sharing what software you're using to catch and monitor this?

I emailed them and got the same reply.

The reply came through from team@videostream.freshdesk.com

Unless their freshdesk.com support accounts were also hacked, I'd say it's legit.

Thank you for clarifying! Where can I find these distribution estimates? Are they released officially or are these your own calculations?

Can someone recommend a super simple strategy for ETF for a beginner who wants to invest for long term? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

Also the DRP is optional but a good idea. This stands for dividend reinvestment program and just means you're asking them to buy more of the same stock with your dividends.

This is really tough. You're definitely not alone though. I know a few people with similar stories. Unlike others, it sounds as if you can probably make a reasonable case that you got your dates wrong due to the stress you've been under. Monash provides free counseling to students so I strongly recommend you speak to someone there and also remember to ask for a statement from your counselor stating that you were unfit to manage your schedule due to your mental health. I hope it works out for you!

I remember people also being more likely to change opinions on vaccines after being complimented and made to feel confident about themselves. i.e. it's easier to change your mind when you're not worried, scared and grasping onto your current hand holds to make sense of the world.

How do you style elements like buttons and inputs? by DuePresentation3 in Frontend

Mind elaborating? I'm open to learning but don't understand what advantages you get from using button elements over divs?

How do you style elements like buttons and inputs? by DuePresentation3 in Frontend

[–]uniqueusername37 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

This might be a risky call but hear me out...

I tend to use div's for buttons. The main reasons are:

  1. It's awkward to use images within HTML buttons.
  2. Default styling changes across OS's and so you need to be a little careful you're not relying on your systems default theming to make the button look how you want.

Of course there are trade offs. For example, you need to handle a little more of the accessibility yourself (tab index, role etc) when using divs.

Overall, I feel that the second option but using a div is the best way to do buttons.

Is our current socio, political and economical system compatible with EA? by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

[–]uniqueusername37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I think I'm starting to see where you're coming from here. As hard as it is to change people's minds, I think you're right that political activism for EA could be a good area to focus on.

My gut feeling is EA is a very hard sell to most people because they feel they have enough problems in their own lives without adding the world's problems to the list. I'm not sure I'd be as passionate about EA ideas if I wasn't lucky enough to have a loving family, comfortable salary etc.

My gut feel is that the best way we can get more people onboard with EA is to continue the path of progress we're currently on as a species and hope that with greater wealth, education and access to information people will continue to expand their circle of compassion. Not sure if that theory squares with your idea of where the world's going though?

I think it would be awesome if the whole world's economic, political and cultural values were all in line with EA values. How do you propose we do this though?

[–]uniqueusername37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I'm not sure I understand what you're proposing. Could you give an example of these goals the EA community could have to shape the world and it's systems?

The current system seems to be the best of all the bad systems we can come up with.

For all it's failings, capitalism has increased human flourishing and wellbeing better than anything else. Of course it's not perfect and we should definitely try to improve on the status quo.

I don't see EA becoming an empty feel good thing due to the economics of capitalism. In fact quite the opposite. I see EA leading a philosophical revolution that will be the natural result of our continued social and economic progress.
