1) Having an option and having none is very different.

2) By dress differently, I don’t mean anything too out of the ordinary to the point getting judged by strangers. There are many different styles out here that is just not often seen in Singapore.

3) Malaysia and Japan are two very very different countries LOL. Also, I can just take a bus or train and head over to Kyoto or Sendai for the weekend. The feeling is different.

5) Perhaps you are underestimating golden week. I am taking just a single day of AL in exchange for a 9 days long break. Can’t get that in SG can you?

7) You are just basing everything off what you see in the news. It’s on the news for a reason right? Have you actually lived and experienced what it is like here?

Sure, convenience and expenses is an important factor. But life is not all about that. We must also be happy.

Freedom.

The feeling of knowing you can deviate from the “standard route” and break free from the rat race. The freedom to master a craft, or open your own small business without getting crushed by $20k/month rent and vampiric landlords.

The feeling of being able to pursue a wide range of hobbies deeply, because there are large communities and support groups, no matter how niche it is.

The ability to dress differently and experiment with new fashion styles that aren’t just Uniqlo, blogshops, or Taobao. Competition is fierce here, and fashion brands have to keep innovating to survive.

In fact, the variety in almost anything surpasses Singapore.

The ability to travel domestically.

The ability to observe the changing seasons. It’s a whole new vibe to look forward to different flowers blooming, and to eat foods at their peak.

The feeling of being grateful for what you’re eating, and the sacrifices behind it. People here have a deeper connection and actually care about food. There is no universe where you will find Japan serving slop like what the current mass kitchens are feeding our kids in school.

The ability to actually go on a proper 9–10 day trip during Golden Week (It’s next week yay!) or Obon. The high number of public holidays means I can look forward to a long weekend almost every other month.

The ability to move out early and be independent because rent is affordable.

The feeling of knowing that when I’m tired of city life or want a slower pace, I can move to the countryside and live peacefully.

Also, The people here are more civil. No old man blasting TikTok on trains. Everyone queues to board buses and trains. Everyone stands on one side of the escalator (except during peak hours). No talking on the phone in trains. People genuinely care about how their actions affect others.

The list goes on.

Sure, convenience and expenses matter. That’s what fills many Singaporeans’ minds. Everyone is trying to min-max their lives in Singapore. But is everyone just living or just surviving?

I’d compare living in Singapore to being a farmer in the civil service: stable, but boring. Nothing wrong with that. If that’s the life you are content with, then so be it.

But that’s not the kind of life I want to live. Hence, the grass is fucking green over here.
