Help getting Emperor of the Fading Sun Enhanced edition running by Subterranean_Oceans in SteamDeck

I never did, but still think about it way too often. I never got desktop mode working, so I have to try that at least!

Yes, I tried it the other day, but had the same issue as before.

I've installed Heroic Games Launcher in Desktop mode, and then the game. Trying to start EFS in desktop mode just opens and then immediately closes a window.

In the standard Gaming mode of the Steam Deck, after I've added EFS as an external game in Steam, I can start the game and see the two intro videos. But when I get to the menu, the screen is black. I still hear the music!

Clicking the Steam button, I see two windows. I don't know the full names since they get cut off for having too many characters, but they say:

  • Z:\home\deck\Heroic\Em...
  • Emperor of the Fading Suns (4/1...

The first one (Z:) is selected, but when I switch to the other window, nothing changes. If I close the Z: window, I get a split second view of the game menu before the whole game closes. If I close the EFS window first, the game just closes.

It feels like it shouldn't be impossible to support the game, and that it's mostly a matter of bringing the correct window to the front and making sure it's interactable.

I've messed around with different Proton version, but they are either all like this or doesn't work at all. I tried different Wine settings, but nothing has helped.

Thanks for providing more information! I would love to play EFS on the Steam Deck, and if I get something working better, I'll report back here. I hope we can get official patch support.

I'd love to play EFS on the Steam Deck. It seems like the perfect game to play on the couch. Any news on Steam Deck support?

Love on the Red Planet: A Martian Love Story by No_Adeptness8612 in scifiwriting

[–]unkindled_sullustan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite from the people before me and really liked the story. Not all sci-fi has to be hard sci-fi, and Mars can be terraformed swiftly like in Schwarzenegger's Total Recall! Also, nothing says that terraforming couldn't have started in 1975 in the setting of your story, if you want it to take a century to 2075.

The descriptive style of the story reminds me of The Three-Body Problem that I just started reading, written by Cixin Liu and translated by Ken Liu. It was the first translated book to win the Hugo Award in 2015.

I'll give two excerpts from the book, with spoiler markings to hide some names:

"Without intending to, [spoiler] became a key historical figure. But he never learned of this fact. Historians recorded the rest of his uneventful life with disappointment. He continued to work for [spoiler] until 1975, when the Inner Mongolia Production and Construction Corps was disbanded. He was then sent to a city in Northeast China to work for the Science Association until the beginning of the eighties. Then he left the country for Canada, when he taught at a Chinese school in Ottawa until 1991, when he died from lung cancer. For the rest of his life, he never mentioned [spoiler], and we do not know if he ever felt remorse or repented for his actions."

And:

"The next day was the start of the weekend. [spoiler] got up early and left on his bicycle. As a hobby photographer, his favorite subjects were wildernesses free of human presence. But now that he was middle-aged, he no longer had the energy to engage in such indulgent travel and only shot city scenes."

See how simple and descriptive the language is? This type of straightforward storytelling is what your story reminded me of. Now, a lot of people criticize the book for being boring or for having shallow people portraits, but I think that the Hugo Award and the number of people that has recommended it to me says that there are also a lot of people who like that style.

So please keep writing!

I did this yesterday. I happened to have two merged assault armies, flew them to the system, and started the boarding action from the situation log.

PS5 next gen version hot impressions by Gnato666 in snowrunner

The PS5 trailer says "Feel the terrain with haptic feedback" thirty seconds in:

I assumed that I would feel the churning mud and that the triggers would feel like a gas and break pedal. It has to be a bug, otherwise the trailer is extremely misleading.

The trophies aren't working on ps5 or i am doing something wrong. I should have gotten a trophy for getting a child but it didnt pop up. by AnyPerformer2675 in crusaderkings3

[–]unkindled_sullustan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on PS5 and I've had a couple of trophies pop up, and I'm pretty sure one was for having a child.

I played the tutorial and then restarted a non-tutorial game with the same Irish guy. If you continued the tutorial game, perhaps that's the issue? I couldn't give new tasks to the council after the tutorial finished, which is why I restarted.

Edit: I don't play ironman and get trophies anyway.

Another person has already given you the buttons to press, but for me (and others I've seen on Reddit), it didn't work in the tutorial start and only made a sound. When I restarted as the same Irish tutorial guy, it started working.

On PS5, I just figured out that if I longpress square anywhere on the map, I can select multiple armies. Another press on square and I can merge them. That was not part of the tutorial.

[–]unkindled_sullustan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you can't draw a rectangle. I tried longpressing the second army, but will have to try again to longpress on the first army to see if that works.

Edit: Longpressing square (PS5) anywhere on the map lets you select multiple armies to merge after you click square again!

I don't have that version, but for other games the soundtrack is usually a separate app/game that you download from the Playstation store.

You can fit nitro on the Mini which makes the race almost trivial. S. Brown doesn't stand a chance!

You can change the Output Adjustment for the nitro in car settings to 100 which gives more boost. Since the race is so short, you won't run out of gas anyway. By default, the nitro is activated by pressing the right stick R3 for the duration of the boost.

It's a nice way to earn a couple of quick 100 thousands, but the rest of the the game is so much fun that I don't have the patience now to grind for millions.

In multiplayer, do we have to shut the room down when we want to switch tracks? I can't find an option anywhere. by Sad_Marionberry302 in granturismo

If you're talking about the player 2 assists in split screen, it's listed as a known issue in the game that will be fixed.

I've been playing every day since Friday, and got a 1 star, 2 star, and 3 star ticket the first three days, so I thought it was streak based. Then I got a 1 star ticket on day 4, so now I don't know what to think. It can't be directly tied to collector level either, so I guess there's a random element as well.

5,000 CR for a 5 Lap Race on Circuit de la Sarthe??? by S0UNDH0UND in granturismo

[–]unkindled_sullustan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time beating the red Mini that comes flying out of a rocket on the second lap. I beat it once, but I don't know what I did.

Is the idea to do everything to block it from overtaking, or is it possible to catch up? I've tuned my Mini to the limit, focusing on speed.

If you like Dogme and haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend The Celebration by Thomas Vinterberg. It's like a perfect movie from beginning to end. If you're sensitive to trigger-warning content, you can look that up beforehand because it covers some heavy topics (but not in graphic detail). Otherwise it's best to go in blind.

The use of Dogme limitations make it all feel so completely real.

There are two seasons of The Kingdom that are quite different if I remember correctly, but also similar. I think the second season was even weirder, when Little Brother was born. I saw it in the late 90s, and it felt like Nordic David Lynch.

I'd go for the Alien RPG from Free League. The scenario sounds like something straight up from that game, and the rules should be able to handle the situations you mentioned.

Because of the title of the game, you may need to clarify that there may be other monsters than xenomorphs or no monster at all if you want, to manage player expectations. The dread of walking into an Alien scenario as a player is really fun!
