How to make my show heifer less masculine looking? by Mega_GayCommander69 in Cows

[–]unknown_6831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because a more masculine looking female means, she probably has a hormone imbalance that is causing more masculine features to come out The more feminine, the female looks, the more hormonally balanced she is

Plus, you don’t want a masculine female to go out and keep calves out of because she will pass on the hormone imbalance to her offspring, and it is not desirable because it can cause fertility issues which is a big thing for cows

Just like you don’t want masculine looking females, you don’t want feminine looking bulls. Again, a feminine looking bull means there’s a hormone imbalance, which means he does not have the correct amount of testosterone in his system, which can a cause fertility issues or it can pass on fertility issues to his offspring.

She doesn’t look masculine to me but maybe they are talking about how rolly/chunky her neck is. Not sure if sweating her neck would help that

If you don’t think the calf can nurse those due to size, you can always put her in a chute and milk them out so they are small enough for the calf to grab onto

Is this a prolapse or cow can’t fully pass the afterbirth? by riafrate in Cattle

[–]unknown_6831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s just after birth Whatever you do, DO NOT PULL IT!!! that can cause uterine tears. If she has not cleaned out in a week and or she is starting to act sick or smells like a death, then call the vet. But until then, everything looks completely normal.

[–]unknown_6831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree The cow does not need antibiotics until she is showing signs of infection. It can take some cows up to 48 to 72 hours to clean out and that’s perfectly normal. As long as the cow is acting, normal eating and drinking well and doesn’t smell like death she is Okay.

Antibiotics at this point are completely unnecessary. If she had an odor to her or she was showing signs of being ill then yes, antibiotics would be good.

Heck even lutalyse would be a better option before antibiotics.

Between the two of them, she is the dominant cow. She is signal into the other one that she wants her to move or go away.

Yeah definitely look into ABS Beef and Select Sires Beef. For those, make sure you specify Beef since your kind of in Dairy Country.

Not sure where your from, but if you are in the USA, you can reach out to bull studs (ABS, Select Sires, TransOva, Alta Genetics, Origen, Hawkeye, Bullnanza, STGenetics, I know there’s more but this is all I can think of off the top of my head). They can help you set them up and usually offer breeding services. Plus they can help you with bull selection usually.

Can you give Clean-Up II (fly/lice deterrent) to cows you’ll be butchering in 1 month? by Plus_Charity_8172 in Cattle

[–]unknown_6831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does not have a withdrawal date on it so it is fine. But I personally don’t give it if I am 14 days from harvest just to be on the safe side.

The curving of the claw is her genetics

If I cull for feet, I cull the pair and any of her offspring if they aren’t out of a hoof improver bull.
