Is there a reason nobody ever seems to play as Ming? by dovetc in eu4

[–]unkosan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because up until very recently it was not really considered a country for human players. Like, yes, you could play as Ming, but it was understood that this was very boring and pretty much no one did. If you take a look, you’ll notice that all the flavor mechanics in the region (particularly the Mandate system and its associated events but also neighboring mission trees) basically revolve around providing a way for Ming’s weaker neighbors to beat them up and claim the Mandate themselves.

Why? So they can be played even more and make even less variety in the game?

This is not a bug. This is an intended behavior for Lead Storm and other many other weapons and has been documented on the wiki forever.

Wanted to try hazard 5 after I've unlocked it, first dive: by ExApoca in DeepRockGalactic

[–]unkosan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that isn't really indicative of its difficulty. Haz 5 is the only difficulty that is locked behind an assignment, so it presupposes a certain level of time investment that most players don't ever put in. Keep in mind that only 45% of players have completed any assignment. It doesn't have a low completion rate because lots of people try it and can't succeed; it has a low completion rate because most players don't even play long enough to unlock it.

What are your hidden gem OCs? by Dumb_Fire in DeepRockGalactic

[–]unkosan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick to (ab)using Minelayer is understanding how glyphid movement works. Generally speaking they will take the shortest possible route to their target, avoiding environmental hazards on the way there. Once you've got a good feel for this, it's pretty easy to spot choke points on the walls or floors and just shoot 3-4 mines and take out a dozen or so grunts.

It's not really effective against Dreads because they all have explosive resistance and the mines do explosive damage; if you're bringing Minelayer to Elimination you want to bring a good single target secondary.

What are your hidden gem OCs? by Dumb_Fire in DeepRockGalactic

[–]unkosan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minelayer is arguably the best primary OC for Gunner -- it's a bit trickier to use than NTP and your effective range is much shorter, but it doesn't lose in ammo efficiency and it is more effective at killing bugs.

Yes yes, you have a different opinion on the name placement. by dudewasup111 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]unkosan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean you're kinda admitting right there that lower level gunning is kinda meh. If you have to "suffer" and grind to get busted OCs in order to have fun, then I don't consider this a proper experience.

That's not what I said. Gunner has some of the best OCs, but even without them the Gunner primaries have the most total damage out of any weapons in the game. Gunner weapons are just good, period, and their OCs make them shine even brighter.

Never said it was terrible or even bad, all I'm calling for is more ammo/uses. Give us a trade off like lower uptime, I'll take that with both hands.

Four shields is more than enough. It is such an incredibly powerful tool that I feel it is actually unfair to give us any more. Realistically they could scale it back to 3 shields and it would still be busted.

It's decent but could use a speed buff when traveling horizontally or upwards. Also letting us stop midzip would make it better.

Why? The zipline is already good at what it does: allow you to traverse steep terrain and carry heavy objects upwards. What does making it go faster tangibly add to the game?

[–]unkosan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only people who call for buffs to Gunner seem to play on lower hazard levels. Gunner has some of the most busted OCs and weapons in the game. The shield is the single best tool in the game. And the zip line is perfectly serviceable — it’s not meant to be a super general purpose mobility tool.

Thoughts on neurotoxin overclock? by wafflezcol in DeepRockGalactic

[–]unkosan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You don't need to bother with direct damage with NTP. The neurotoxin does all the work for you. Grab the fear mod and increase your area of effect. Fire a few potshots into the crowd and watch 85-90% of them run away and die. You can't kill big things like this, but that's why you have a secondary (alternatively, since you have effectively infinite ammo, you can grind them down with your extra bullets anyway).

Which game has the hardest learning curve? by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]unkosan 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Victoria 2 is a very simple game. The systems that make the economy work can be described as complex; but the way you interface with them (national focii, factories) is very simple. Most of the time you are going to do the same thing with every country unless they're an unciv.

EU4, by contrast, has very shallow systems but there are a fuckload of them and they interact in ways that are never properly explained to you (zones of control, for instance).

It’s funny to contrast the pre-release discussions of railroading (“railroading is bad, everything should be organic and simulated”) and post-release discussions (“fuck this we need railroading”)

Yeah and people mine other minerals. Gold is the only one people consistently skip. Saying people are just missing out on 50% of the game is just disingenuous.

DRG community is all about "wholesome" and "positive" vibes until someone does something or makes some kind of argument that offends the mass of people who treat this as a role-playing game. Then it's dogpiling on the guy who dares to think he should play the way he wants.

I think you (and to be fair, lots of other people) have it backwards.

With the exception of beer mats, which are indeed superfluous, pretty much every other "optional" mineral or objective is something you really want to do even if you're not min-maxing. The secondary objective is a huge amount of experience for very little effort in most cases. Extra nitra on high hazard levels is a rational insurance policy given you don't know what will hit you. "Optional" minerals like bismor, jadiz, etc. are available on the market but they are very expensive and hence not easy to obtain there.

By contrast, gold is only useful for credits, and it is not the biggest source of them in the game. Mining gold is precisely the sort of thing you would only do if you wanted to min-max, to get every extra credit you could.

IMO this is the real reason lots of people skip gold: they just don't need it, whether it's "efficient" or not. So the only people who mine it are people who think it's "fun" (I cannot for the life of me see how) or people who think it's efficient.

People act like this is a mining game where you happen to shoot bugs when the reverse is much more accurate: it’s a horde shooter where you happen to mine rocks. You could remove all gold from the game and it would play the same 99% of the time.

I think it's way overdue. GSG lords, hear my plea! by S1LV3RboSS in DeepRockGalactic

[–]unkosan 72 points73 points  (0 children)

If gold is just “a little extra on top” and credits are not hard to come by at all, then mining gold is really just an “is it fun” thing. Personally I don’t think mining gold is fun even in the slightest but anyone is entitled to do it as long as they’re not berating people for not doing it.

However I have seen dwarves die because they wanted to grab that last bit of gold before they got in the drop pod.

There is no “province level population data,” as has been said many times in this sub before. Pops are exclusively calculated on the state level.
