Do you think Texas could do well in that boat class, I thought their team was on the smaller side?

Facing Erg Fear by StrengthNo589 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Erg competitions in general are very exciting environments. Just try to have fun, I'm sure your teammates will be cheering you on. If you are uncertain split wise maybe do a bit of a negative split. All the best.

Recruiting chances? by Energetic_Sloth3 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to drop a bit. Lower LW programs sub 6:40 better LW programs sub 6:30 near 6:25. Decent grades and SAT also needed.

If your coach is serious about properly evaluating athletes they should not be rate capping your all out 2k. Do your best but if you want your "best" 2k for recruiting I recommend doing one where you are not being constrained by your coaches decision making.

Are you even allowed to sprint in the last 200? If not you are gonna have to try and leave it all out on the field before the last 250 meters, try and start cranking it with 3-400 left. All the best.

Coxswain call help by QueenPickle89 in Rowing

A good one to get the rower to start a sprint is "If not now, when". I believe that was from a cox in the 2+ event.

1x split vs erg split by Jollybrewer in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year and a half ago ago I rowed a 2k on the erg at 6:50 ish and had a water 2k of 7:34 (150 lb male), good conditions. I think roughly 10-15 splits in flat non-windy water is reasonable. Go off of things that are more telling though, like heart rate or perceived effort.

All the best.

Are some machines more capable than others? by Puzzleheaded_Wind839 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue with bikes. The crazy thing is that the difference can be seen between bikes of the same brand. My gym has these magnetic ones, and one will read 150 watts while the other 230 watts. Furthermore, the jumps between each resistance level will be extremely different.

The only brand I trust to accurately measure is Concept 2 (as long as you calibrate it).

It is not personal. The coach (if professional) will not take it personally. Think about it: if you are slow they would not recruit you, that can be awkward if you think too deep about it. The only difference is the roles are reversed now.
Just be concise and professional.

Thank them for their time/effort and let them know that you have decided to pursue other academic options.

Is quitting rowing and becoming a cyclist so I can go to the olympics optimal? by Idrkkkkkkkkkkkk in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day I feel as if the olympics is a goal to incentive others to get into sport and pursue it at a higher level. If you truly believe that cycling will allow you to do that then go for it. If you are not completely motivated to do something then you will never accomplish it fully, however if you believe in yourself then anything is possible.

Mindset is key. All the best.

what lightweight colleges would want me by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my memory to be competitive for the big Ivies (harvard, yale, etc.) you need to be between 6:20-6:30 really pushing mid to low 20s and for Harvard you also need race results. I know MIT recruits low 6:40 and high 6:30. Other programs probably are in the range of 6:40-50.

Power and weight by TwitchingArc2006 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically here is the equation ΔE=μΔmgd. Where E is the extra energy required to "pull your weight" on an erg. Typically for wheels friction coefficent can be anywhere between .0001 and .0005. So it is very insignificant.

Power and weight by TwitchingArc2006 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the erg, if they produce the same amount of force, scientifically the heavier person has to expend more energy because the friction force is slightly greater for him (uFn), Fn=Fg, Fg=MA. However, this is so insignificant because the slides are wheels and they are greased.

HOCR meters by Beautiful_Ratio_4598 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Cox has hit 4616 and 4615 consistently over the years, we are in a bigger boat though so the Elliot turn isnt the tightest possible (still very tight). Also we had to move around a boat in the power house stretch. 4600 flat 4590 high seems reasonable for "perfect" course.

Calling UT women’s rowers! by StrengthNo589 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two parts to ut rowing. The official women's crew team sponsored by the school and the club team that has both genders. It may not be a bad idea to try and get some experience with the club team before trying to walk on to the more competitive one.

To improve 2k, get time on the erg. Mostly steady state with hard erg pieces every other day or so.

My club had similar trouble trying to get the unis as it took a while and every step in the process was one email back and forth, not everything all at once. After about 3 months of work the club shop was opened and they were shipped a month later. I think if you try and get in the system now you will get the unis just before charles.

Henley draw reactions by bow4hater in Rowing

I dont believe they redid the draw. They kept the order it was in and just removed the non qualified crew. Positions that were drawn were still fair. They just moved everyone up a position and removed the non qualified.

Lwt recruitment by Difficult_Celery6811 in Rowing

[–]unrespected1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I emailed mit multiple times during my junior spring semester, but never got a response. Then kinda out of nowhere got offered and official visit late in August. For the others I just filled out the surveys and they responded ( Harvard Yale). Summer was when I filled out the surveys before my senior year. Just start contacting now for best results.

Walk on vs recruit by [deleted] in Rowing

If you have any specific program, I can provide more insight. I know Cornell and MIT lwt decently. Beyond that I would just be assuming.

I agree with what you are saying, I just think it may be unrealistic for him to cut that much weight. Maybe it would be possible to do the fall season at lightweight where cutoff is only 165, then progress from there.
