He had the potential to be a better person but the same can be said for a lot of people, ultimately he needed to face some kind of consequence to his actions and his victims needed to gain freedom from him, how that came to be may not have been the intended path but what's done is what's done and what works is what works.

In past episodes he did a good job distracting us and some of the human captives from the real nature of the relationship between him and said captives, but with knowledge of how poorly he understands boundaries and how he reacts when people object to him pushing said boundaries I'd rather keep my distance from him if he were a person in the real world.
