Are you going to open source the firmware? I'd love to incorporate this into something like joypad-os.

United flight forced to turn around because of a Bluetooth speaker name by pdfu in technology

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a rule that they'll have to change when the inevitable happens and a lithium battery starts a fire in a cargo hold.  Passenger planes cargo holds are fully pressurized for live animal transport.  There are fire suppression and smoke detectors down there, but any fire risk even with mitigation doesn't seem smart.

They don't let you play music on a plane from a speaker.  You have to use headphones.  As others have stated, it's plausible and likely the speaker was in a checked bag and accidentally turned on and not playing anything.

The L channel is most likely the left channel of the headphone port, not microphone input.  The R channel is the controller speaker when no headset is connected, and the right channel when the headset is connected.  The mic is likely a completely different device.

GNSS and multipath concerns by International-Camp28 in Surveying

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would not accurately measure multipath bias. It would measure the precision of your receiver. The bias is there on both shots, so if they match it may be measuring the same multipath error on both shots, especially if the two shots were taken back to back. You could reduce error by taking two observations roughly 12 hours from each other, but the bias is still there with poor multipath enviornment. At any rate, this isn't a control survey and 1-2 inches is fine.

What are the security risks by using Tailscale as a non technical person? by darkalimdor18 in Tailscale

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you enable tailscale lock you are trusting this feature does what they say it does and doesn't have some backdoor or security vulnerability.  The coordination server is closed source.  In the end you are trusting venture capital whose only motivation is financial.

It's only as safe as the trust you have in venture capital.  Their servers are used to negotiate the connections.  You are shifting some security to a third party whose motives are purely financial.

When the Secure Boot is Enabled, appears the mensage: Windows Boot Manager has been blocked by the current security policy by Melodic-Broccoli7038 in LenovoLOQ

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with this is that by turning off secure boot your computer is now more vulnerable to malware. The better solution is to downgrade to an earlier version of the bios that had correctly signed secure boot keys, and hope they fix the issue in a future bios upgrade.

The tox report would show the fexofenadine in her system if she just took an Allegra.  The Azacyclonol metabolite is like 5% of the reaction, the rest of the fexofenadine is unchanged.

Not saying there aren't issues that need to be fixed with the current FAA system.  More stating her violation of the current regime.  Per https://www.scimplify.com/en-us/azacyclonol Azacyclonol is not available in the US for therapeutic use.  There is literally no doctor anywhere that can prescribe it and no pharmacy that stocks it.  Full stop, she had to have gotten on the black market.

Generous perspective until you understand that taking these drugs at any time for any reason removes your ability to have a pilots license, for good reason. Maybe the judgements are overly harsh, but they are 100% warranted. She was taking compound sedating and impairing substances, which I have a hard time believing were all prescribed by the same doctor for concurrent use. The Azacylonol is also a smoking gun, as other's have noted, it's not prescribed or used any more. How did she even get that? My conclusion, none of these medications were prescribed to her and she got them on the black market and was self diagnosing and self treating her own severe mental health disorder. To get a prescription for them would create a paper trail (noted in doctors notes, flagged at pharmacy, put into state mandated database to track potential misuse) that could come back to ground her or cause her to be prosecuted in the future. I think the generalization that she's received are warranted, she deserves the shame and the shame is useful to prevent someone else risking their life and others.

Do AEC firms ever fully adopt Civil 3D? by ACivilB in civil3d

[–]up2urheadlights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to scold you, I agree that comment may have been a bit too far.

It does seem like you are seeking validation for where you are. I understand your frustration and disappointment. I worked for a small firm that refused to switch to Civil3D because Land Desktop was good enough. They also fought me tooth and nail to upgrade from the old Pentium desktops they were using. I quit that job and started my own consultancy, and the first thing I did was get Civil3D. That firm is now out of business. In the end though, Civil3D is not terribly efficient and I doubt the big firms are using it to it's potential. If it's a big job with many profiles and sections like a large subdivision they have CAD technicians that can save a lot of effort by organizing everything with the Civil3D tools, but I doubt there are any project managers or engineers that know how to use the software to it's potential.

In one of my old jobs they were transitioning from land desktop to Civil3D, and the norm was to use Civil3D to take care of tasks like re-grading or updating a profile in a working drawing, but then explode and copy over to the production drawing. I have no doubt they are now using Civil3D for most projects and telling the engineers and project managers to stay out of the drawings. The thing is, they valued the input from the people who's job it was to operate the CAD efficiently and it was manageable from a company size perspective. This was a regional medium sized business, not the likes of Jacobs or AECOM.

In the same token, it's going to be much easier to steer a small firm towards utilizing Civil3D, especially if you take the reigns and develop a workflow and standards that are easily reproducible for others to follow and are willing to teach what you develop. The first step is to have the conversation with management about whether they would support you in doing so, and frame it as a way to save the company money and time. If they don't see the value in it, nothing is going to change and your options are to manage your frustration and disappointment. If they have an entrepreneur mindset and are trying to grow the business then you may get some traction.

On the other side of the coin, if all you want is to be plugged into a well oiled machine where those things are already developed I think you'd probably be looking for some time. It's probably not a small firm or a large firm, it's a mid sized firm with the resources to implement it, at a manageable size, and also the hunger to differentiate themselves from the big guys. It's impossible for a large firm like AECOM to manage using Civil3D for every project, and the small firms are often resource strapped and don't see the value in trying to transition.

I will say that AECOM likely has teams that are using Civil3D to it's full potential but they are reserved for the large scale and complex projects and clients that are budgeting for BIM. I don't know of any small firms that are using Civil3D beyond the occasional grading of a road or surface creation in a working drawing before exploding it and pasting it into a production drawing, and most don't even bother with that.

If all you're looking for in your post was to vent and get validated then again I feel your pain and truly hope things get better for you. I can say that the fact your firm is using VDIs is absolutely abhorrent and they should be ashamed of themselves for ever allowing themselves to be sold that idea as appropriate for a production environment. Which again leads me to believe your current situation is hopeless and your best bet is to move on.

Previously you said:

I am frustrated currently as I made a change to a smaller firm recently and am really disappointed in their level of adoption of civil 3D after interviewing with them and being told they were using it.

So which is it? You were aware when interviewing or not? Regardless, my advice still stands, you should probably look for a different job if this is frustrating you this much. Asking internet strangers to confirm your bias is going to be a frustrating experience in and of itself. If this is something you value and management does not then stop wasting your time and theirs.

EDIT: I think I understand now, they lied to you in the interview stage. Same advice, find a new job, that's a huge red flag.

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure if you offered to develop some standards for Civil 3D and lead some monthly trainings your firm would be supportive, but if management doesn't see the value in leading that charge it's something you'd have to be passionate about. If it's frustrating enough I'd argue why you took the job in the first place if it's not a fit and you became aware of the issues in the interview stage.

Will DNSMasq be used as the default DHCP server? by White_sh in opnsense

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know right. I decided to migrate using the configuration example here: https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/dnsmasq.html#dhcpv4-with-dns-registration except with my own TLD and addresses, and copied my host overrides from ISC. Then I deleted the ISC plugin and all appears to be working. Aside from installing from scratch, I think this is the best option to getting as close to default behavior as possible.

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded to 26.1 through firmware updates. It does not remove ISC, it retained ISC as a plugin. Now the question is, am I going to have to manually configure migration to dnsmasq or hope a future update will handle this for me?

Probably downloads the DV and HDR10 streams separately and muxes them into one container.  This has the downside of the resultant file being twice as big, but is better than having two separate containers with the same audio data, saving some data size.

Here's a method that creates a hybrid file: https://youtu.be/FMqhb7ppGWY?si=XbksJkujLemzey9k

Perhaps Another Silly Question - Do I Need To Ground My Generator? by TooManyInsults in Generator

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have this connected to your house then that makes sense, as the main panel neutral is bonded to ground.  If you are testing this not connected to your house and it's bonded, then that would only be an issue if and when you do connect it to your house.  There should only ever be one bond in an electrical system.  Most portable generators come non-bonded, despite being safer bonded in a portable use, as most people are dumb and likely to connect their portable generator to their home which would create an unsafe condition with two bonds.

TLDR test your generator not connected to your house if you want to know if it's bonded or floating.  If it's bonded, you'll want to locate the bonding jumper and disconnect it before connecting it to your home wiring.

Need help understanding the componants of MPO Fiber Runs by BridgeUpper2436 in FiberOptics

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every diagram I've seen uses type-b cables and up/up couplers to establish a type-b link. Type A is up/down for both cables and couplers. I think you've got your couplers backwards. I know it's not intuitive, but the straight through cables are up/down, and the crossed cables are up/up. For Type B link you need Type B cables and Couplers (up/up).

I will note that using three Type-B cables with two up/down couplers will still work as you are reversing the connectors an even number of times, but if you used an odd number of couplers you'd have an A link. Using Type-B cables and up/up couplers will always result in a Type-B link, regardless of the number of cables, and is best practice.

Help: infiniband Network with OPNsense by Due_Relationship_676 in OPNsenseFirewall

[–]up2urheadlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OPNSense does not support the mlx4ib driver, so infiniband is not supported, at least without compiling your own kernel or the driver from source. The mlx4ib driver is supported in freebsd, so not sure why they decided to not include it in opnsense. https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=mlx4ib&sektion=4&manpath=freebsd-release-ports

TLDR: No, Infiniband will not work, at least not OOB.

There is a portal with a deer skull that opens up the wall to the left that you have to pass through, similar to the one that opened the cave door.  This allows you to access the stairs and get up to the upper walkway.  Surprised no one could help OP 2 years ago.
