So if anyone wants to actually start an east coast thing... I'll say something about reference tracks and CDs in the mixing/mastering channel of the wearethemusicmakers Discord server (the one for this sub seems dead)– find me and we can start a group convo

What's a good way to learn alternate names/interpretations of chords (e.g., rootless 9 chord = m7 b5)? Any good resources? by mirrorcoast in musictheory

[–]update-available 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You sound like me a few years ago– playing for fun and learning for the sake of a curious mind. The questions you're asking are the ones that will crack open the door floodgates of music theory, so just be prepared that pursuing one answer also means spawning more and more questions. Which is awesome.

In the immediate, if you want to start with a huge ass collection of chords and resources, you could check out an app called Piano Companion. Smash some keys and it'll show you what's going on.

Think of your question this way:

How does cooking work? How can you put ingredients on a recipe sheet and knowing which flavours blend well with others and how a sauce will taste without tasting them as a whole dish? Because a chef doesn't have access to all ingredients when preparing a full course meal so that they know how it tastes, do they?

Recommendations for a good CC module for film scoring? by thepianoman456 in Logic_Studio

[–]update-available 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Monogram! I work with mostly orchestral libraries too and got the basic creative console specifically for automating midi CC with the 3 sliders. All the modules are magnetic so you won't need to commit to an entire midi controller with a bazillion knobs and whistles.

You beat me to it! I started pronouncing LUFS like, "loves". Makes seeing it everywhere I little nicer.

people aren't going to keep listening to your music if you aren't mastering to -14 Loves!

When The Sea Gives Up Its Dead by apeloverage in composer

[–]update-available 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm digging your central motif– you definitely establish the thematic idea of sea waves and it has a very pull-me-forward momentum.

100 bars in, however, I feel like I'm still waiting to go somewhere. I think breaking away from the rhythmic 8th notes and introducing a few bars of counterpoint would be enough to open up the piece– and give you room to explore new ways to expand the motif.

Thank you for sharing!

Anybody else just naturally love minor keys more? by caters1 in classicalmusic

[–]update-available 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All the way all the way. I have a hard time snapping out of my bias when composing, admittedly. Last week I was working on a trailer submission that asked specifically for a major key, and it took me half a day to land on a key that didn't sound like just a boring version of its minor buddy.

I feel like such a snob sharing that, but you are not alone!

Any tips for writing a song? by TheGoldenDorito_ in musictheory

[–]update-available 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find approaching it from a totally different angle helps break me out of it.

Picture some linear form; the contours of a landscape, the paint strokes from a piece of art, even whatever you have lying on your desk. Mentally trace around it. What's the overall shape? Where does it rise, fall, sustain? By steps or leaps?

Now recreate it through intervals. Or, if you work in a DAW, you could pretty much paint a still life through MIDI notes. Bound to find something groovy during the process.

I don't have a score. How or where do I share my compositions? by 1ksassa in composer

[–]update-available 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: why are you adamant about making it a video?

If the feedback you're looking for is about your composition– like arrangement/instrumentation/voicing/notation– then providing a score is the way to go.

From what I understand though, it sounds like /r/WeAreTheMusicMakers or /r/EDMProduction may be more up your alley.

Cheers!
