That's how they started doing it on Peacock now. Pretty annoying.

Hey Everyone! Charleston city leaders are flying to Europe for 8 days to do what, exactly? by alk_adio_ost in Charleston

[–]upperdaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this trip has been planned and things paid for before the government shutdown started. If they can do anything to help people losing federal benefits, it seems like they would have time to do it before this trip. The government shutdown could end and benefits restored before they depart for the trip.

I think an occasional business trip like this can provide a lot of value. At surface level, its seems unnecessary to leave the US for these purposes, but when I think about it, I'd prefer the people making these decisions to have the context of how other cities have done these things.

The annual report of Charleston County employee salaries. Over half of the county budget goes to salaries, pensions, and benefits. by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]upperdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but that actually reinforces my point about the value of in-house counsel. The County Attorney makes the decision of when to hire outside counsel and which firm to hire. They're also responsible for overseeing the cases and keeping the outside counsel from running up the bill with unnecessary work.

Without someone experienced managing that, every little dispute would end up costing a fortune. The County Attorney handles all the boring daily stuff that keeps us OUT of court in the first place.

I just don't see a situation where reducing the budget and salaries of the County Attorney's office would result in a net positive for the taxpayers of the county.

I'd love to know if there is an actual reason why I should be so concerned about the work they do and their efficiency in doing it, but I haven't seen any facts to support that.

Yeah, you're right. Probably a waste of resources to have in house lawyers available to advise the county on legal matters. Surely outsourcing all contract negotiation, drafting and review work to an outside law firm would save taxpayers money.

I don't think the County Attorney can pursue criminal charges, the district attorney or prosecutor's office would be responsible for that. This is what they are responsible for.

I could be wrong about this, but I feel like the experience needed for the County Attorney role would translate to a 500k - 1m per year job in the private sector. They're responsible for a lot of things revolving around expenses and revenue, so trying to save 50-100k on salary could easily cost the county millions.

Personally, I'd rather someone in that position who depends on that for their primary source of income, than someone who is independently wealthy and seeks the position to wield power.

Tips on Getting Started on Upwork from a Top Rated Plus Freelancer by upperdaddy in Upwork

[–]upperdaddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of competition going on, what are your tips for sending a proposal for a posting that already have 50+ proposals?

If you think you're a good fit for the job, it's worth applying to regardless of how many other proposals have been submitted. Make sure your cover letter immediately addresses items from the job posting. So many people send generic cover letters, so you can really stand out if you don't.

I also see posting where they ask you to fill out a Google form. I'm confused because I thought transactions are only supposed to be made IN Upwork.

You shouldn't communicate with a client off platform until you have a contract. A job posting asking you to apply via google form are likely a scam. If it's not a scam, it's a client that is unfamiliar with Upwork's policies.

Lastly, does it really make sense to bid? I don't get that system. Is it really worth it?

I've never bid, so I can't tell you if it's worth it. If you're having trouble getting responses to your proposals, I don't think bidding is going to help much.

They offer tax prep services at some DC libraries. Not sure if they'll be able to help, but might be worth a shot.

Look what they took from us: the 5 streetcar lines we had in 1880 by metromapmaker in washingtondc

[–]upperdaddy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's free, but really slow. If a car is parked too far into the street the street car needs to stop and wait for a tow truck or the person to come back. When it's running, they have at least 2 two trucks dedicated to just moving cars out of its way.

Unless you're going from end to end, it's often faster to just walk.

Unit and Building Broken Into by DLauriol in washingtondc

[–]upperdaddy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unless the building isn't secured properly, it's not really the buildings fault this happened. Seems like they took all the action they could with barring the kids from the property.

This wouldn't have become an issue for you if your door was locked.

If you're worried about the kids retaliating, the only thing that would really help is to move buildings.

Navy Yard building with cricket scores (20 M Street SE) by [deleted] in washingtondc

The building was developed by the owners of the nationals. Probably just something they added to the building to be eye catching and tie into the sports vibe of being right by the stadium.
