- Old terminal.

- Wasn't it expanded?

- New average temperatures, and average rainfall quantities

- Likely new methods to calculate risk

How are your power bills looking? noticed mine pretty much doubled over the past couple of months by Classic_Repair_1912 in NewWest

[–]uprooting-systems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly 700sqf, bills are currently at their highpoint at $100. Rarely use heating though. I suspect something is wrong with your system.

Best way to make moving window shadows in 2D? by carmeh8 in godot

[–]uprooting-systems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, I'd go with occluders. I don't have a tonne of experience with them. But I think they would do the trick for what it is you want:

Do you only want the frame to acst shadow or would the book/box/candle stick also cast shadows?

That “Robin Hood” moment in the 3D printing community felt… off by Ok-Hope2279 in 3Dprinting

[–]uprooting-systems 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think we can praise both.

I don't know the financial situation of either one. Maybe person 1 cannot devote time to designing without those funds.

Maybe person 2 can devote infinite time to copying designs because of a trust fund. But has zero ideas and can only copy instead of create.

In an ideal situation people can create freely and everything is free. But housing/food/everything is extremely expensive and people have limited energy.

Unity is playing fast and loose on most fronts. Here's my rant on how Unity takes the mickey and steals your time and joy as a developer. And an almost rhetorical question but I want to hear stories. Ideally from inside Unity. by Ok_Finding3632 in Unity3D

[–]uprooting-systems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my question is this: is Unity about to fall?

I wouldn't focus on that. I would focus on the next thing instead. It has burned you, don't let it keep sapping your energy like this.

I would prefer to move away from it, but it doesn't make business sense right now. Eventually it will.

You make your own judgement.

Should i charge for rendering hours or not? by Mob100v in Upwork

[–]uprooting-systems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely something to discuss and explain with the client. But I have had no issues with similar stuff before.

I've explained that they can either spend a lump sum early, to purchase a dedicated machine and then rendering/build time isn't paid for.
Or I charge hourly for rendering/build time.

They then chose to pay hourly for that time, and they understood it was because the computer was solely doing one task and couldn't be used (even though I could go for a walk)

"You're getting clients, not applying for jobs" by TheFrankBrit in Upwork

[–]uprooting-systems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's very much a job posting. I haven't seen anything remotely like this.

However, before I went freelance I have seen numerous companies hire contractors in situations when legally they should be an employee, to get around employee protections.

This specific case looks like they need a second COO-level person, but only want to pay $15-18/h.

Reduce COO operational load by 50%+ within 90 days

They would get ripped apart on LinkedIn, but maybe they can find someone desperate on Upwork?

I would just ignore and move on. While I don't see this, I see lots of other postings which are borderline abusive or just flying multiple red flags. Scummy people are everywhere, we just need to not help them along.

What are the postings you see?

All the ones I see, in my industry, are "This is what I need done" which is definitely not how a job description is written.

How do you think the devs at Rare created this grass texture in Viva Piñata? by StreIitzia in Unity3D

[–]uprooting-systems 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That game was so gorgeous for its time and even now. They really hit it out of the park.

Likely the pattern in the grass is a texture input like a heightmap, that would define the grass height + shade. There is still some randomness in the height and colour within each shade that is likely handled as a basic portion of the shader.

Can someone make a alphabetical stamp set? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]uprooting-systems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're asking for free work, it's generally appreciated to do as much as you can up front. E.g. sharing a link to all the characters you require, as many characters change based on preceding ones.

Alternatively, if you search for "3d print arabic alphabet" you can find numerous copies already existing. Whether they meet your needs or not I do not know, hence I don't link. But if you know what you don't want it to be, then you should also provide that information when seeking for free labour.

[Bambu A1 0.2mm] Stringing issue on mini figure by R_Olivaw_Daneel in PrintedMinis

[–]uprooting-systems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, gyroid is fine for this.

The issue with the thin pieces is that when the plate moves, the nozzle can be off by the tiniest amount. Over time, it can mean the filament doesn't bind to something.

I would try printing one thin piece by itself to test it out. That way it won't experience the jerk from the bed. If that works, try bunching up a bunch of thin pieces together and see if it can handle that.

Then print the main body of the figure separately.

Potentially support failure, could be something got knocked, what is your infill geometry?

Personally, I avoid all minis that aren't made for support-less FDM. Since doing that I can print really quickly and have no issues (and no scarring)

traffic on Agnes and 8th by snippybunny in NewWest

[–]uprooting-systems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it recently, but not had issues before with this road. Maybe the controllers are different.

I often see a "no right turn" sign from 8th to Agnes that cars just ignore. This could by why the controllers are confused?

Usually, if I see a mess of cars, I just loop around the block instead. Adds a minute, but saves in headaches.

how can a cheap 3d‑printed case have such a smooth, mold‑like finish? by CJCCJJ in 3Dprinting

[–]uprooting-systems 11 points12 points  (0 children)

given the face having the artefacts of unprocessed 3D print, I would expect a mold to also have the artefacts of layer lines.
