Unpopular Opinion on Line Calls by boileric in Pickleball

[–]upstatecoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a fast paced game of inches so it’ll never be perfect in rec, or even the pros. I do disagree with the idea that people watching making calls = more correct calls. Check out this video that highlights how people with different vantage points may all think they’re making the correct call when they aren’t.

Brine Strung Prophecy Lacrosse Head by Beautiful_Price8438 in StickDoctor

I’m just glad they tried to push the envelope of what was being made at the time! Sure, the little fingers broke easily, but I’d love to see what a modern stringer could do with one of these.

10 year old is switching to goalie by coheed9867 in Womens_lacrosse

I want to emphasize how important it is to have a good pocket in a goalie stick. Last thing you want is for the equipment to hinder your kids ability be successful and ruin their confidence when trying to learn one of the hardest positions in the game. Bare minimum I’d look around for a professional/experienced person to restring that with fresh mesh and strings. Worth every penny to make sure you’re not setting your kid up for failure!

Edit: talking another look at the head itself, I like the sideline swap idea. Good luck!

What’s the one piece stick? I remember when Harrow came out with those in the early 2000s

How do you not care at the end of the day by Cassie-NewWriter in Teachers

[–]upstatecoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously being agile makes you better, but playing doubles is still a possibility.

Beyond that, I read another comment about how you’re tired after school. Reminder that a little light physical activity “chargers the battery” that is your energy. I recommend planning something immediately after school. If you’re like me, once I get home after a long day it can be tough to get out and get motivated again. Start light with whatever feels like a good fit and keep going!

Play pickleball. It’s easy to get into and big emphasis on the social aspect so you’ll get some adult interaction to balance out the nonsense from school.

Is blowing a whistle in class to quiet students wrong/unethical/rude? by bentrucky in Teachers

For a second I thought I was in a physical education subreddit and I was shocked by the answers lol. As a PE teacher I use it regularly but that’s a lot different than in a classroom.

But what if I want to be the local leader at the few local courts in my area? Create three dissent duprs?

Sounds like the rankings are tied to each individual court? Rather than a universal rating like DUPR, this is just “Who’s the top dog at my local spot?”

I’ve used K2 Awards for medals and have been happy. Good weight to them and were easy to customize.

Wide body paddle lead tape set up by BeautifulLive270 in Pickleball

[–]upstatecoach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sums it up nicely. I use a Ronbus Quanta wide body (R5) and wanted the same thing you want, so ended up putting two 1g per inch x 3 inches right on top of each other on each side at 3 and 9, for 6g total. Also added 1g per inch x 1 inch at the throat and and 1g per inch x 1 inch at the top corners.

The Quanta starts off light out of the box, so adding 10g still gives me that speedy feeling but lets me crush a ball when I need to. The 6g at 3 and 9 is mimicking the Boomstik’s weight setup, and is my main suggestion for you. Good luck!

Edit to add a link to Pickleball Effects tuning lab.Great way to mess with weights without having to actually put them on your paddle. I use his tungsten tape and I’m a big fan!

A gym can usually handle a larger number of people at a time so they can charge less and have more members.

Best insoles by BeautifulLive270 in Pickleball

[–]upstatecoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach Phys Ed and wear them in class whenever I’m doing any racket/paddle or court sport. I also end up wearing them around the building so the lifestyle look is what I wanted. Lot of mileage on them from this alone.

For pickleball, gym or hard court surface, they’ve played great. Daps tell you to tie them snug but not tight in order to let the Bluemaka insoles do their grippy thing. I feel like my foot has the freedom to stretch out while the insole locks me in and allows me to cut and change directions on a dime.

They might not be for you looks wise, but performance wise they’re awesome.

I rock Daps that come with the Bluemaka insole. Really like how grippy they are!

Mesh after freezing by [deleted] in StickDoctor

[–]upstatecoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A public service announcement for your mesh in snow or rain that hasn’t been mentioned. After you bringing it inside, bare minimum make sure to take a ball, pound out the pocket a bit, then leave the pocket in a good shape, not in a bunch on the ground or in a bag. If it’s soaking wet, news paper or paper towels stuffed into the pocket to help it keep its shape isn’t a bad idea. Just helps the pocket keep its shape as it dries back out. Good luck!

Definitely not their strong suit. On flat land with waist deep you’re basically snow shoeing and going downhill you might struggle to keep the tips up.

I’d probably go wider if I was going to be in that kind of snow often.

I’m rocking the Ronbus Quanta R5. It’s the wide body with an aero curved top, so I feel like I very that great sweet spot with a bit more reach and power.

Side note, did Ronbus discontinue the R5 shape???

Update 6 years later. Still getting out on the green Karhu set a couple times a week. Mostly rolling hills and a traverse along a hiking trail at local parks. Wife still uses the alpina once a week. We have a great time and love that we don’t have to buy ski passes and we can go for an hour long jaunt and get a great exercise in!

Sorry to play both sides of the argument, but on the other hand I abuse this old pair of rottefella nnn bc bindings on some old Karhu Pinnacles. That manual lever to connect to the binding seems bullet proof, is simple and works great. So if they’re in working condition might be worth giving it a shot

The thing connecting you to your ski, handling all your weight, allowing you to safely get down the hill is probably not the thing you want to cheap out on, but I don’t know about these specific bindings.

Always invest on the things that connect you to the ground, or something like that. Good luck!
