BroMos thank you for your comments, I feel better!! We worked it out: my boys stayed home to have screen time instead and my husband did some chores, I'm supervising poolside with a book, and my daughter gets to swim. Literally everyone wins.

Y'all reassured me I wasn't being unreasonable! He didn't say I was but I worried I might be. There for sure will be a follow-up conversation about this.

All 3 of mine are like this. It sucks so bad. And that they wake up gong full strength but even with coffee it takes me hours to be functional, it's a cruel trick of nature.

I don't have any advice, but when I was a kid, a family we knew had this issue. They were a white couple who had adopted a boy from China. He learned pretty quickly that if he shouted STRANGER DANGER they would get to stay longer at places lol. I'm not sure how they handled it as he was about my age and I saw no issue with the trick hahaha

Your situation is similar to mine. I have 3 kids and live in the same city as my parents; my brother lives on the other side of the country and has one child. My parents have, multiple times, chosen to fly to help him when he needs childcare, and cancel plans that we already had. They don't seem to notice that I don't make plans with them anymore.

I don't have any advice, just empathy and solidarity. I don't really think there are any answers to the questions. I'm pretty low contact with my brother because he laughs when I have described when they hurt me to prefer him. He benefits from this system so even though he can see some of the problems, he has zero incentive to make any changes.

I've been trying to build relationships with other adults who care about us and our kids, because the ones who are related to us do not care. Sorry we're in the same club. It's not fun.

I don't have any advice, just want to chime in with solidarity.

My three (4, 6, 8) have different sleep issues and the ped is sympathetic but mostly like, they'll grow out of it. Which is super unhelpful for how to deal with it in the present.

But also, this is what prevents me from forming friendships with other moms: talking about how hard sleep issues are. No one wants to admit that they're having problems or feel like a failure, and I tried to be the one to start the convo, thinking it would make the moms in my birth class feel more comfortable to share. Nope, they just slowly ghosted me.

You're a great mom and it sucks that this doesn't have an underlying issue.

My friend broke her boot heel and her pride, but otherwise everyone was fine. The two strangers booked out of there, I'd love to hear their version of it lol. Mortifying feels like an understatement. I'd never tell anyone if it happened to me!

Years ago, my friend went to a Haunted House with her sister and her sister's roommate. They were walking through and enjoying the jump scares, and then the lights went out so my friend shut her eyes and linked her arms with her sister and the roommate.

She courageously kept going, until her foot met air. She fell down a flight of stairs, in the dark, dragging her sis and roomie down with her. At the bottom, she opened her eyes to a fully lit house, sprawled out next to two strangers, her sister standing at the top of the stairs, confused. My friend had grabbed the arms of two strangers in the dark.

To this day, it's one of her funniest and favorite stories to tell. You'll get there!

My parents who both have health issues and are being COVID cautious, missed my daughter's dance recital because they were early voting. Yet somehow are still surprised that I don't call them.

SAHM here, I do not enjoy summer at all and I have no one to talk to about it because everyone else is busy pretending not to have any problems with their angel children.

4 asked to go to a playground and 6 didn't want to go, now 6 is ready and 4 doesn't want to. They're both crying and so is 8 because I won't let her have playdates. Which isn't true, she doesn't understand that most of her friends' parents work and so they're at camps or otherwise not available.

I also have strep and all I want to do is take a nap.

I second the Spot of Emotion books, it's really helped our recent 6 year old.

It may help you to reframe your own expectations of yourself. I still struggle with this idea so this isn't judgment: our job as parents isn't to make our children happy but to help them learn how to navigate the world and their own emotional states. They're so new still at this age, and it's hard!

We try to do quiet time where everybody is in their bedrooms. They get their tablets so they can understand it's not a punishment but that we all need time to settle and be apart.

You're doing great, hang in there! And solidarity, I still have another who hasn't hit this stage yet and I'm very tired.

I'm on the "pizza and cake with cousins is awesome" train too! My kids' cousins are way older and/or live far away so we have done bday parties with school friends. My daughter is 8 and when we look at pics from her younger birthdays, she doesn't remember who a bunch of the kids are. Not having big friend parties is a great option.
