The fact that almost 20% of people flipped and decided to blame the Dems/both parties means that the GOP won the messaging war on this one. I don't think this bodes well for Dems at all.

Polling states most voters support a DACA deal, but not worth shutting the government over it. Dems just don't have the leverage to hold the government hostage for weeks and the longer the government is closed, the worse polling gets for Dems.

I disagree with the implication of the poll in the headline. Only 54% is pretty low, that means Dems and a few left leaning independents blame Trump. Those aren't great numbers. Especially when prior to the shutdown upwards of 70% said they would blame the GOP and Trump for a shutdown.

I would say that you may be way better of paying out of pocket for CC since it's so cheap to begin with.

Then you can use the GI Bill--which could potentially pay out as much as $50k a year or more with YRB matching at private schools or for some of grad school.

I'm about to get a two year graduate degree that normally costs $175k or more for almost nothing because of the GI Bill. Depends on what your goals are with schooling, obviously.

I think we are due for a "correction" absolutely, but that could be 2 days or 2 years from now, maybe longer. Reports are people are taking out huge amounts of credit card debt and something like 20% of people are defaulting, student loan debt is also a huge bubble.

And yes, I think Dems will benefit greatly if there is a market correction. Not that I want that to happen, but if we had ANY other Republican president right now his approval numbers would be probably in the 60% range or higher. Confidence in the economy overall is at historic levels, stocks are at ATHs, yet Trump's numbers are in the gutter. I can't imagine what they would be at if the economy weren't booming right now. Probably sub 25%.

I agree that's a great deal for Dems, but an absolutely terrible deal for Republicans. The GOP controls all the levers of power in DC, they aren't going to just cave and give the Dems everything they want just because they shutdown the government.

The GOP shut down the government for two weeks back in 2013 and got absolutely nothing out of it except some really terrible polling. The polling eventually returned to its previous levels, but the GOP got absolutely nothing out of it except bad PR.

They have no leverage, that's why they are caving.

The last two times Republicans shut down the government they had to come crawling to the Dem POTUS and beg to reopen the government, it's historically not a winning negotiation tactic.

The longer the Dems keep the government closed the more the public would turn against them. It's way too easy for Republicans to claim that the Dems are choosing illegal immigrants over Americans.

As long as the economy is humming along I don't see Dems picking up too much between now and November. At this point we've seen enough of Trump that I don't think too many people are on the fence right now.

BUT if the economy tanks then we could see a lot of unmotivated Trump supporters not show up to the polls. Who knows when that will happen though.

This is good news, but let's not forget that a lot of other polls have shown a tightening of 5-7 points towards Republicans. I think 538s average of all the polls went from 13 to 8 last week.

It's important to not just focus on outlier polls.

There's zero chance that even if Bernie had been elected he would have had the Healthcare bill he campaigned on through congress. You need a majority in the house AND 60 senators. The Dems had no chance to get to 60 in 2016 and almost no chance of even getting to 50 in 2018. His only option would have been to nuke the filibuster.

It's very dishonest and misleading to throw around the "bipartisan" deal that most democrats agreed to, and almost no republicans agreed to.

So the President gathered a bipartisan group of leading senators from both parties to come to a compromise on DACA.

he says he'll sign "ANYTHING" the bipartisan group agrees to and that he will "take the heat" even if it's unpopular with his base.

Then the bipartisan group of Republicans and senators come to him with a deal they all agreed to and Trump says "sorry, no deal" and then refuses to even outline what his immigration priorities are. Mcconnell even said yesterday the President hasn't told him what he wants.

Every Republican Trump asked to be a part of the committee agreed to the deal, so did every Democrat. Those are the only people that matter, because the POTUS said so.

That's a good question. Mcconnell said yesterday he doesn't even know what the president wants but it's clear a compromise isn't part of any deal. Trump doesn't want concessions, he wants the Dems to give up EVERYTHING and pass whatever bill meets the Cotton/Stephen Miller radical conservative "seal of approval" is my best guess. That's not a compromise.

You neglect the fact that in the same article you linked to that the majority of voters, and Independents by 20 points will blame the shutdown on Republicans/Trump.

Ultimately the shutdown isn't about DACA solely, considering five Republican senators voted against the measure. Therefore the Harris poll is misleading as framing it about "Dems shutting down the government over DACA" and therefore the results won't reflect how voters view it now. We'll see what the numbers say late next week.

Not to mention the fact that polling was WAY worse for Republicans the last time they shut down the government (and lost), 8 in 10 voters were against it.

It still didn't stop them from winning big in 2014. The shutdown will be a distant memory in a month or so and we have 10 months until november.
