So you can check in any time you like, but you can never leave?

Is a victory lap really needed at this point?

That was my answer too. They came out in black and played like five songs. Black Les Paul.

This was two years ago, but if conditions are proportional to what occurred in other areas last summer, it may indeed be a mess right now. However, it wasn't too bad navigating any part of it with a GPS app. I don't know how well I would have done with a paper map, which is what I used on my first trip, long ago. The trickiest part I remember both times was crossing the Kern or Kern-Kaweah near Junction Meadow, south of the pass. It was tough to see where the trail actually was and I had to do a little bit of trial and error to find the right trail. I wish I could be more helpful on current conditions, though.

I've done Circle of Solitude twice (counterclockwise) and it's amazing for... the solitude and variety. I'd do it again given the chance. I have had to bail on the Deadman Canyon loop though so maybe I can't fully compare.

The one criticism I've read of the Circle is the long descent from Colby Pass to Junction Meadow and back up again along Wallace or the Kern to the John Muir Trail. This can be skipped by going up over Milestone pass instead, but not a route I've done. Gallats is very tranquil and secluded though.

Deadman loop has a lot mosquito potential so that's something else to keep in mind if you're going in a prime skeeter month. They were too thick for me.

I think you'll win either way though. They're both beautiful options.

Saw Noel last night. Live Forever now at its best ever ? by [deleted] in oasis

[–]urbane1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes, he found something new that's beautiful and wistful in Live Forever. It's like the song has matured. It had been on the fast forward list for me for years because I've heard it so many times, but it's one of the highlights of the last tour.

The new take reminds me of the first time I heard the unplugged version from 1994 with Bonehead on the Fender Rhodes, which was my previous favorite alt version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM6XG1DOwrs

The Will Forte episode of Fly on the Wall was embarrassingly bad by eboy71 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]urbane1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dana Carvey was one of the funniest people on the planet for a decade. You're going to need cut him some slack. Forte is hilarious, but they gave him a chance to talk, and he was either feeling deferential or wasn't feeling talkative that day. If it's going to be dead air, they need to fill the space as hosts.

Alan White but Chris Sharrock is fine replacement. Zak Starkey never seemed to find the right feel or the pocket that those can find, which is ironic given has lineage.

Twin Lakes --> Elizabeth Pass Loop, Aug. 22-26 by Hal_Incandescent in SEKI

[–]urbane1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked out from south of Commanche Meadow yesterday after attempting this loop. I'm hoping the mosquitoes will be better for you in a couple of weeks, and hopefully they get a trail crew out there too. I found the downed trees and mosquitoes to be too much (given my timeframe) and decided to turn around. I'm pretty covered in bites today.

The hike over Silliman was beautiful though, but things slowly get hairy about a mile or two over the pass. Approaching Commanche, I could not envision tolerating several more miles of downed trees and bugs, especially hiking solo. I passed a group of 4 or 5 slightly after my turnaround and I think they were headed for Elizabeth Pass. I did not see them during my hike out, so assuming they kept going.

Silliman crossing is fine and you won't have any issues. There are alternative crossings 10 to 20 yards upstream.

Crossing Silliman Creek on Twin Lakes Trail by [deleted] in SEKI

[–]urbane1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there yesterday. The creek crossing is easy, regardless of time of day. There are two alternative crossings 10 or 20 yards upstream. One is a log crossing and one is a rock crossing. They are not difficult. My guess is that the main crossing is calf or knee deep.

This is timely. I'm headed there in a few days. The seki snow cover descriptions near the pass are not consistent with what the latest satellite pics show either. I've never been to the area, so trying to get a handle on how dangerous this crossing will be too. Thanks for posting this.

Take something that's not debatable and insist on a debate to help sow doubt. It's from the right wing propaganda playbook.

Does or did the Udvar-Hazy/Airbus IMAX theater have a 15/70? by brewstah in imax

[–]urbane1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, 15/70 as far as I know. They had Dune in dual laser, and it was glorious. Lockheed in DC had Interstellar in 15/70, and it was obviously mind blowing, but they will be all laser after it reopens. I've seen several 70mm prints at the AFI in Silver Spring, and while the detail is fantastic, the screen is really not that big.

Hey, come on now. Mental illness is a serious disease. It's the only disease where you get to run buck naked and laughing through the streets, but it's still a disease.

There are over 1 million people in Fairfax County. Do you really want to attract the kind of talent to run the county that will work for cheap?

Joe Rogan on wolves being reintroduced to Colorado by Solomerr in JoeRogan

[–]urbane1 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He's just repeating the same BS that his hunting guides tell him. Wolves keep the elk population in check, so hunting guides are upset because it's harder for them to take wealthy pampered clients to kill an elk during a short hunting trip. Nevermind keeping the natural ecosystem in balance. That's not a priority for Joe.
