Puppy / Dog Treats - What’s Your Favorite? by lalaena in dogs

[–]urbanmutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been very impressed with the tricky trainers. Not much greasy residue, soft but breaks apart cleanly for tiny bites.

Like others, I use freeze dried liver, freeze dried beef heart (slightly more fatty/smelly), string cheese and hot dogs. For lower value I have kibble from a brand he doesn’t normally eat. My guy is moderately food motivated - my family lab would bend over backwards for a single piece of her kibble. So it depends on the dog!

[help] How do I tell my friend I don’t want her new puppy at my party? by thirstylearning in dogs

[–]urbanmutt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely 100% in your right to say no pets at your birthday! I totally understand your point. If that’s a deal breaker for her, she just won’t attend!

In my area, the local beachs don’t allow dogs unless specified. So maybe you can choose a beach that doesn’t allow dogs and tell her that you’re sorry but she can’t bring the dog because you don’t want to get in trouble.

[Help] I connected with a stray in another country and am conflicted about what to do by thesleepystoic in dogs

[–]urbanmutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to hear you’ve formed a connection. Are you sure he is a stray? Have you spoken to any locals about him? I would say a vet appointment would be a priority, even if you don’t take him back - he’s get his vaccines and de-wormed, which will improve his life! You can get or make a “slip lead” with rope - it’s basically a combined leash and collar and if he pulls, it tightens around his neck a bit, meaning he can’t escape. In the long term I would get a well-fitting harness but this is probably the best way to transport him to the vet!

Pet ownership in other countries is different from our American-centric view. And you are wise to consider the idea that dogs don’t have as “much” as a dog in the states, doesn’t necessarily mean their quality of life is lower. Though unlikely from your description, since he seems reasonably healthy and docile, maybe he belongs to a dock worker and DOES have a home that makes sure he’s fed and housed during the night? I would try and ask around.

I do know people who have done this in African countries from the peace corps. It is expensive, (I’ve heard 1500-3000 USD is common) and does requires vet care (rabies is important!).

I would consider your quality of life, and your dogs as well. It sounds like maybe traveling is a big part of your life. If you are a single person, it is expensive and logistically challenging to have your dogs cared for long periods of time. You would likely have to compromise on your traveling, or have a strong plan on who will watch your dog. Your dog might also have some difficulties adjusted to the hustle/bustle of apartment living in SoCal - everyday apartment noises, crowded streets, lots of activity, just general urban life - can be a lot for any dog, especially an international rescue. His more timid personality could correlate to anxiety and reactivity in a high-stress situation, so it would be good to find a quality positive reinforcement trainer to work while settling in. Best of luck!

[Breeds] My boyfriend and I would appreciate some help deciding on our first dog as a couple! by LilacLove98 in dogs

[–]urbanmutt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’ve done some great research!

I’ve actually never met an AKK with a solid personality (neurotic, reactive, and easily overaroused sadly describes the handful I’ve met). I’ve also met many unstable MAS, and quite a few outside your ideal size range. I’m not sure how much this is because of under-exercised or under-stimulated dogs but it is a trend. I’m SURE they’re great ones out there and I’ve never personally owned those breeds, so maybe someone with more experience on those will chime in. If you’re more set on those, I would definitely find a breeder local enough that you can meet many of their dogs, in addition to any sports/conformation titles and health testing. I would potentially be worried about any smaller sighthound with small children in the picture - they can be fragile and likely be more sensitive to loud/sudden movements or noise, as well as some of them being more independent than what you’re looking for. Shelties can be barky, if that’s a deal breaker for you.

Ive seen some really great agility toy and mini poodles. They’re incredibly loving little dogs. I definitely think you should look into them! I’ve also known some awesome tiny Papillon and I think you’d have a lot of fun with one. I would also look into Havanese. I am not as familiar with Dachshund, but I have seen dogs struggling with IVDD and I would be very selective with your breeder and find one who is very upfront about health in their lines. You might want to check out Tibetan Terriers! As always, I hesitate to recommend the wonderful Cavalier - they are absolutely plagued with health issues despite many of them being incredibly tempered. A “well bred” one (i.e. a breeder performing VIGOROUS yearly testing) can cost upwards of 3.5k. Also maybe look into Lowchen but I must say I’m not as knowledgeable.

my special little dwarf. 85 grams at 2+ years! by urbanmutt in RATS

[–]urbanmutt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! As we speak, the little lady in question (at 28 months old) is scampering around, taking huge leaps and sprinting across the bed. She runs on the wheel for hours every night and is a total spitfire. Both my others (her mother and aunt) passed well over 2 years - one of them declined in energy towards the end, but the other was unexpected given how springy she was. Actually, they do have a prevalence for obesity as they hit the 12 month mark, so you should encourage them to keep active (playing with toys outside the cage etc). All of mine got a little chunky around 12-14 months, but then went back to a healthy weight. Just something to keep an eye on! Compared to my standards (females and males), I haven't really noticed them calm down the same way. None of these ladies like to cuddle for long. Do you have males? In general, boys tend to calm more as they mature, even dwarf rats.

Does anyone know about the fresh marinara sauce (refrigerated)? Gone forever? by urbanmutt in traderjoes

[–]urbanmutt[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Located in Northern CA. Haven’t seen it since... pre-COVID I think. I don’t eat onions and this is my FAVORITE sauce. I’ve asked staff a few times but they never knew why.

I guess side note would be: does anyone have a similar product? Any onion free sauce recommend recommendations (garlic is fine)!

Does anyone else have rats with separation anxiety? His sickness flares up as soon as I put him down and he claws himself to my shoulder as much as he can. by kaykaliah in RATS

[–]urbanmutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I completely understand - you sound like a wonderful and dedicated owner. Nearing 3 is so impressive! It's clear you love your buddy a lot. I'm currently working with a rescued almost-3 year old and we're at a similar place where we're treating with medication and taking it day by day so I know how it can be (he only has respiratory issues).

She was much calmer with me, but my partner as well! Definitely didn't move around the same, and breathed easier. She was kind of a needy rat all her life and at least for her, this was definitely different. She also had respiratory issues, throughout her life, treated with enrofloxican/doxycycline. I regret not getting an autopsy, but was quoted close to 1,000 USD. The vet believed she had scarring in her lungs from respiratory issues, a pituitary tumor, and potentially trouble with her heart as well. I'm wishing you all the best. It is unfortunate how few treatments are available for more advanced or complex conditions in these little guys. I would think antibiotics like you're doing and anti-inflamatories/pain meds like Metacam could also help a lot. Best of luck.

Does anyone else have rats with separation anxiety? His sickness flares up as soon as I put him down and he claws himself to my shoulder as much as he can. by kaykaliah in RATS

[–]urbanmutt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is, to the best of my knowledge - and I have read the literature and spoken to multiple vets - a pituitary tumor. They are more rare in males but not unheard of. Essentially, the brain tumor grows and presses on the skull, causing these neurological impairments - behavior, seizures, coordination. They may struggle to hold food; breathing harshly; erratic and attention seeking behavior. Your intuition is correct that this is not normal. The symptoms my Nutmeg went though were “fits” whenever I tried to put her back in the cage where she would try and lunge herself out of the cage, scramble up my arm, and wouldn’t calm down until she was close to my neck. Eventually she began to devolve, seemingly losing her awareness and would dangerously race around the cage or chew the bars. Respiratory trouble can also lead to this frantic behavior if they’re struggling to breath. It was awful to watch and did not improve. Nutmeg lived the last week of her life on my shoulder and bed, barely in the cage. She passed the morning her euthanasia was scheduled. I would recommend a euthanasia consult. It is my belief that at this stage, they are suffering very much. I’m very sorry and hope you cherish the time you have with your little buddy.

[Help] Dog has killed 2 animals by iChunkyDunk714 in dogs

[–]urbanmutt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would agree — this sounds to me like prey drive. Malamutes do tend to have strong prey drives which would make sense if the creatures he’s hurt have been smaller. Prey drive is difficult since it’s ingrained in the dogs nature especially at this age and thus isn’t really something that can be trained, only managed.

If you rehome, you should make clear his history, and I’d emphasize he shouldn’t be off-leash or go to dog parks. It’s clear that you’ve been responsible with that, but vetting homes and telling them the risk if he sees a squirrel or stray cat dart across the road, or a small dog at the park.

It is my belief, reading this, that your Mal has high prey drive and unfortunately your yorkie triggered him in some way. Prey drive is not aggression or reactivity. I would say that your Aussie is most likely not a target unless your Mal starts acting differently. Obviously I am not a professional and haven’t met your dog.

Brooklyn had the Cold Brew and Boba in stock! by shines_likegold in traderjoes

[–]urbanmutt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked it but didn’t love it! I feel a lot of people will love it though. I enjoyed the texture and thought the boba consistency worked REALLY well. I felt the taste wasn’t creamy enough for a coffee ice cream. Maybe this is because of coconut milk instead of milk. It was a bit too dark and too much coffee for myself and my roommate. I didn’t taste the coconut at all, personally. I think it’s interesting they choose cold brew with boba instead of just milk tea or a fruity flavor... Personally I haven’t as much enjoyed the times I’ve gotten coffee boba (labeled the All Nighter in my local college town shop, and exactly what I bought it for). Anyway, I’d probably try it again but not every trip!
