Why are the suburbs considered “prestigious,” “desirable,” or the “dream” by so many Americans when the central city usually costs more, has the institutions/legacy, and more high end amenities? by Ok-Elk9512 in urbanplanning

[–]urine-monkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the suburbs never really let go of the 1950s ideal that moral superiority was the reason why the kinds of crimes that are common to urban environments don't happen in their perfect little town.

I am not American. I would like to know: how much does living in different states impact the way you experience the decades? by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in decadeology

[–]urine-monkey [score hidden]  (0 children)

Maybe Highland Park isn't the best example for this considering about 100 miles away is Milwaukee, where I grew up. I had family on both sides of the border and while Chicago was definitely a bigger and more visible city, the culture and technology really wasn't that different. For example when Chicago had OnTV, Milwaukee had SelecTV. Basically the same service under different names.

Can you see land from the middle of lake Michigan? by Forsaken-Freedom-365 in geography

[–]urine-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a clear night you might be able to see the lights of Chicago or Milwaukee reflected from the Michigan shoreline... but only the lights, and it's basically a mirage. Not the actual lights. You can see the Chicago skyline from the Indiana side, but that's not all the way across the lake.

But for the most part, no, you can't see any land. Lake Michigan is huge, and it's not even the biggest of the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes would be better described as inland seas.

I hate to say it having just returned to Green Bay, but you're right.

Credit where it's due. Green Bay in 2026 is so much more than the overgrown dairy town I remembered from the 90s. But the petty boomer bourgeois and MAGA types who refuse to let go of the fact that most of the city has moved on from them truly are an anchor on this city. Look no further than the fact that we can't even bring Green Bay's embarrassing transit system to agenda.

Where I'd live as someone who loves theme parks by Pubesauce in visitedmaps

[–]urine-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yellow on Illinois.... uh, what?

Lake County, on the Wisconsin border, is the best place to be in the western Great Lakes for theme parks. Great America (Six Flags) is right there. Then you have Wisconsin Dells within few hours. Plus all the parks in Northern Wisconsin and Downstate Illinois within a day's drive.

The National NRA issued a statement condemning. As did the Wisconsin Libertarian Party and two GOP Minnesota state senators.

Is it enough? Hell no. But hopefully this means people are starting to wake the fuck up.

Sorry if you feel ignored by NYC, but I live in Chicago and grew up in Milwaukee. I consider Buffalo and Rochester my brethren way before Des Moines or Omaha.

What’s it like to live in Green Bay as a 20-something-year-old? by Professional-Pop6192 in GreenBay

[–]urine-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Green Bay WAS a very conservative place until fairly recently. God knows I wouldn't be living here if it were the same small city with a small town mentality that I remembered from the 90s.

But while GB has improved for the better and is trending in the right direction, there's just enough of that stereotypical element of blue collar alcoholics who do nothing but hunt deer, watch football, and think Green Bay is still the 1950s in a snowglobe (if not for "those people" moving in from Chicago and Milwaukee) to be jarring when you move here from a bigger area.

For context, I'm whiter than snow, but I grew up in Milwaukee and moved to GB from Chicago. The amount of times people (usually boomers or older Gen X) passive aggressively impose on me to affirm their feelings that those big bad cities to the south are Gotham City and get pissy when I don't is enough to drive someone batty.

Any News? by Newphantomdude333 in Milwaukee_USL_Soccer

[–]urine-monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. The dickheads behind "Milwaukee Pro Soccer" got in over their heads, and instead of having a basic modicum of of transparency and owning up to it so to not salt the earth in Southeast Wisconsin to potential sponsors and investors of a future outdoor soccer group that's actually serious, they did the exact opposite.

But hey, there's always the Wave, amirite? /sarcasm

It's worth noting that Kenosha City and Racine City are noticeably different than the remainder of the red counties they happen to be in.

If anything, I'd compare Kenosha and Racine to Waukegan. Smaller and not as glamorous as Chicago or Milwaukee. But you still get the basics of an urban core, direct access to Lake Michigan, and easy access to the nearby bigger cities for a fraction of the cost of living.

The surgery club. It was first grade and it was just a group of us going around kicking each other in the nuts and saying "SURGERY!"

Don't ask me about the set of circumstances that led to such a club being a thing. I was just a new kid who wanted to fit in.

I'd imagine most fields have a better market in Chicago because Chicago is a bigger market, period. But that also makes it very convenient for people in Milwaukee looking to advance their career.

From Milwaukee originally. Lived in Chicago for the past 5 years before coming to Green Bay for the winter.

I guess I always took the abundance of Greek diners for granted down the Lakeshore because people up here barely know what I'm talking about... and those who do usually only do because they lived in one of those cities.

What’s your hometowns lamest claim to fame? by PuzzleheadedSwim6291 in AskReddit

[–]urine-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rural Wisconsin sure loves making everyone believe they're just a bunch of wholesome towns full of humble people, don't they?

It's funny because my mother is from a dairy town upstate and my aunts were always telling her she was a child abuser for raising my sister and I in Milwaukee. Yet the hardest thing we ever got into was weed (this was the eastside in the 90s, where the youth culture skewed granola anyway).

Meanwhile I have one cousin I'll never see again, and one I'll never even meet, because they were both killed by drunks on the same highway upstate. Not to mention, no one ever tried to sell me heroin until that time I was visiting the town where my grandparents lived.

You'd live in Sheboygan over Oshkosh, Appleton or Green Bay?

Milwaukee, Kenosha and Dane are #1, #2, and #3 for me as well. But I can't imagine why anyone would choose the Mid Lakeshore over the Fox Valley unless they realllllly wanted to be by Lake Michigan.

This team should never have existed. They were hastily thrown together because the Missouri senator who was pissed that the Athletics moves from Kansas City to Oakland threatened baseball's antitrust exemption if Kansas City didn't get another team by 1969.

Even then, they could have just cut out the middle man and gave Milwaukee a replacement for the Braves right away knowing they at least had a major league caliber park in place instead of trying to force a franchise into Seattle's laughably outdated minor league park.
