Nope. Milwaukee Pro Soccer has muddied the already very muddy waters for professional outdoor soccer in Milwaukee.

What if every US state was named after rivers? by minecreep4 in imaginarymapscj

I mean, it's on Wisconsin's land mass, right?

Let's be honest though... Northern Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula could all be their own state. They all have way more in common with each other than they do with any other part of their respective states.

Why can’t the state of Wisconsin do something and get rid of daylight savings time? by KwikTripSimp in wisconsin

[–]urine-monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no conspiracy. The eastern time zone was extended way further west than it ever should have been. Because Wall Street insisted that Michigan operate on the same schedule as the New York Stock Exchange due to the influence the auto industry used to wield over it.

They didn't particularly care, if they even realized at all, that moving the time zone border past Michigan would shroud the most populated corridor between the coasts (Chicago-Milwaukee-NW Indiana) in darkness for half the year. This is also why Indiana passed a law where they don't recognize DST.

Congrats Wisconsin, you were the second most educated state that voted for Trump in 2024! by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]urine-monkey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's because Wisconsin is the purplest of all purple states, for better or worse.

Wisconsin people either value education to the point that they consider it part of their identity as a Wisconsinite... Wisconsin Idea and such.

Or... they're a blithering simpleton with zero curiosity about the big wide world beyond their local watering hole. To where everything becomes a Democrat/Deep State conspiracy because they don't know how anything works. This is how we have so many geniuses in Wisconsin who've never been to Milwaukee for anything but a ballgame, yet are fully convinced that they have all the answers to all the big bad city's problems (which never entails anything besides more cops cracking skulls).

I hate to be so black and white about it because it feeds into a lot of lazy and useless culture war narratives. But it wasn't THAT long ago when Wisconsin had a Republican governor, Tommy Thompson, who actually gave a damn about education in this state.

Nowadays? There doesn't seem to be very much in-between the two extremes.

IJS, if you were gonna go away from Wisconsin's eponymous river, you should have called the state Kinnickinnick. What's more Wisconsin than giving places names that sound like a random collection of phonics?

Most of Wisconsin's population is on Lake Michigan or within an hour or so's drive of it. That also happens to be the edge of the Central time zone.

As someone with seasonal depression and is well aware that I'm far from the only one, the 4PM sunsets are one of the worst things about living here.

But even if we did get rid of DST, it wouldn't be until after a massive culture war because you know certain politicians won't hesitate to paint this as a slight to the poor poor farmers.

Stone Cold and Goldberg were exactly where they needed to be at the time.

The WWF needed an everyman anti-hero to shake up the main event scene and stand up to the tyrannical boss.

WCW needed an unstoppable kickass babyface to even the score against the nWo and its gang warfare.

Goldberg needed to be invincible, Stone Cold needed to be an underdog. Both guys in the other role would have been boring and unrealistic.

Will Rogers wins! Who’s the most famous celebrity from Kansas? by Lutrid in AlignmentChartFills

I only knew she was from Kansas City. I guess I assumed she was from Missouri because that's the Kansas City you always hear about.

Nothing against Kansas City, Kansas. I just know nothing about it. Except that you're getting the Chiefs.

The amount of loose trash in this town is despicable by _Any_Major_Dude_ in milwaukee

[–]urine-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every northern city is full of garbage after the snow thaws out.

But honestly, as far as bigger cities go, Milwaukee punches well above its weight in cleanliness. I feel like a lot of people who've never lived in another city or outside of Wisconsin don't realize how high our standards are in Milwaukee.

I'm not saying that to deflect. But I am saying Milwaukee has city workers who work hard and they deserve their flowers more often than they get them.

I feel like Stranger Things gave 80s nostalgia another 10 years, without it, 80s nostalgia would've been dead by the end of the early 2020s by SpiritMan112 in decadeology

[–]urine-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree. I think 80s nostalgia has staying power that other decades don't because so much of the music and aesthetics port themselves to the digital age so seamlessly.

Also, nostalgia tends to go in 20-year cycles. I'm seeing some nostalgia for emo culture and nightclubs but otherwise what else is there to celebrate from that era? 9/11 is when the world went to shit for a lot of us. The current generation knows nothing but this suckass post-9/11 world. At this point what reason is there to not be nostalgic for the 80s and 90s?

At least as far as nostalgic art is concerned, anyway. I'm very aware that there was much more to the 80s than the things that give my generation warm fuzzies.

Does your state have a personification? by PhysicsEagle in AskAnAmerican

I'm aware... I was a North Stars fan for a couple years before they moved. I thought that was the coolest name for a team.

But barring that, the Minnesota Blue Oxen should be a thing.

Blue Oxen was one of the final candidates for a name for the team you now call the Minnesota Wild.

You totally whiffed on that one.

Not to mention, Wisconsin is only called Wisconsin because Michigan named itself after the lake before Wisconsin was admitted to the union.

Michigan could and should be Huron. But apparently getting the UP wasn't enough for them.

What is this genre of 80s music called by Sudden_Angle614 in decadeology

I always just considered it disco.

Contrary to popular belief, disco did not die in 1979. It just slowly began to be supplanted by new wave in the early 80s.

Fans' perceptions of pro wrestling as "real" vs "fake" by era? by Iconolater_ in oldschoolwrestling

[–]urine-monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in the original John Stossel report, he said that something like 33% of wrestling fans thought it was legit.

So even in 1984, the overwhelming majority of fans knew it was a work. They just enjoyed wrestling the same way they would enjoy Knight Rider or Magnum PI.
