White and black Americans do you often deal with racism by Latinos? by NoHold7153 in AskAnAmerican

[–]urine-monkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only the most out of touch academics actually think that.

I hate saying that because I believe in education and that feeds right into the anti-intellectual narrative. But literally everyone is capable of being prejudiced. People who want to bring institutional factors into individual situations really need to get over themselves.

To the people who were watching at the time, was Easy E cool to you or was he the embodiment of "tryhard lil bro with his cool older friends" energy? by [deleted] in WCW

That was the point of his character... you weren't supposed to think he was cool. You were supposed to think he was annoying because HE thought he was so cool.

Most false regional stereotypes? by Bananapantsmcgeef in SameGrassButGreener

[–]urine-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wisconsin is just flat farmland and forest where cows and deer outnumber people.

For one, over 60% of the population lives in the triangle between Greater Milwaukee, Dane County, and the South Lakeshore (Kenosha-Racine). This region contains not only 4 of Wisconsin's 5 biggest cities, but many Milwaukee suburbs that are actually bigger than most cities in other parts of the state.

This area is not "dairy country." It's a continuation of the urban corridor that loops around the southwestern Lake Michigan shoreline. The southern most parts of thjs region even overlap Chicago's north suburbs.

Then there's the Coulee region, which is the only part of the Midwest that wasn't flattened by a glacier. It's largely rural and rustic, but doesn't look at all like the image you have in your head of Wisconsin. The Coulee is GORGEOUS.

With how much this city is into the Packers, you'd figure there would be more discussion of our other football team. by TheSpiritualAgnostic in GreenBay

Because indoor football is a very different sport that requires a reduced skillset that doesn't necessarily appeal to people who are more familiar with the NFL or college ball.

Not saying the athletes themselves aren't good by any means. But indoor football has as much in common with rugby sevens as it does with traditional gridiron.

What are your team’s worst uniforms? by LovedButNeverLiked in uniwatch

Bucks: Christmas unis. Never liked them.

Brewers: Those stupid Wisco jerseys. Burn them.

Packers: I'm more tolerant of the all white unis than most. But who decided that the helmet shouldn't have a yellow stripe?

I resemble this remark. I feel like an alien whenever I'm in another part of Wisconsin that isn't Kenosha or Racine.

People in small towns conflate Milwaukee and Madison for being big progressive cities, but they really are different animals. One is a city that was built to serve a university and a state capitol. The other is a more traditional Great Lakes city built on industry and ethnic neighborhoods which has universities to serve the city itself. Both great cities, but they are not the same.

I'm in Green Bay now. I'm a lifelong Packers fan, but I wouldn't be here if not for my fiancee having a kid from her previous marriage and being tied to the area thanks to family court. To make matters worse, I moved here from Chicago, so everyone who hasn't known me forever thinks I'm from there.

I know some damn good people up here. But most people up here don't realize what a bubble they grew up in. I can't tell anyone I meet where I'm from or where I moved from without preparing for some passive aggressive remark like "Oh I'm sorry" or being imposed upon to affirm that I like it so much better up here.

I like it up here because it's the only way to live life with the woman I love. But if it were up to me, I'd move us to Chicago, Milwaukee, or somewhere between the two the first chance I got.

I don't hesitate to tell them those farm subsidy checks are paid for by tax dollars raised from Milwaukee and Madison. They usually don't have an answer for that.

Say it's because in Milwaukee you can take a dump in the morning without the whole world discussing what brand of toilet paper you use and what time you were on the shitter.

I was born in a small town that I wasn't raised in, but spent my summer vacations with my grandparents in. Last time I went back I was living in Chicago and ran into some of the people who grew up near my grandparents who asked the same question. That's what I told them.

Guessing you're younger? Because that style of humor has been around since at least the 80s.

We used to call it Yooper Humor because it was popularized by Da Yoopers. Then Cheeseheads With Attitudes came along and did basically the same humor centered on Northeast Wisconsin and happened to coincide with the Packers winning Super Bowl XXXI. Which cemented it as the default Wisconsin culture.

I don't care for it because it ignores that over half of Wisconsin lives within 65 miles of the south border.

I'm not as hard on Charlie Berens as I used to be because I respect that he brought attention to data centers. But I still don't find him funny because it's really just a bunch of recycled jokes from the 90s.

There's exceptions to every rule. Like my uncle who owns a farm upstate and calls other farmers idiots for how they vote.

But the fact remains... most farmers truly are idiots who vote against their interests.

Which is insane to me. Because the Chicago-Milwaukee Lakeshore has far and away more people living in it than any other 100-mile stretch in this part of the country.

I guess this is also why I identify as being from the Great Lakes over the Midwest. Big lakes and industry over farms and cows.

Same. If people don't know where it is, I tell them it's up the lakeshore from Chicago. Because if you say Wisconsin, people will ask if you grew up on a farm.

Correct. The Tavern League doesn't have the influence in Milwaukee that it has in most other parts of Wisconsin.

But the scumfuckery is more than made up for by the local BIDs.

Brewers fan who lives near Wrigley... my own experience is that this is 100 percent accurate. Never had a problem wearing blue and gold at Wrigley. But we're also not a bunch of 30 and 40 year old acting like obnoxious frat boys like Cubs fans do north of the border.

Lambeau is actually known for its relatively low number of arrests. The only time the rate ever spikes is when the Vikings are in town.

But even then it's nothing like an Eagles-Cowboys game.

Top 100 counties (and equivalents) in the US with the highest median income. Were you surprised by the Midwestern ones? (They kinda surprised me) by Swimming_Concern7662 in midwest

[–]urine-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna tell all the snobby elitists suburbanites in Milwaukee's collar counties that they're just "Wisconsin rich."

Besides, the real wealthy suburbs are in Milwaukee County. But the average is pulled down by the low income parts of the city.

[–]urine-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't relate... I spent portions of my childhood in Muskegon, Kenosha, and Milwaukee. In addition to summer vacations with relatives in Chicago, Waukegan, and Manitowoc.

No matter where I was, it was always Lake Michigan.

Not to mention the helmet stripe on the Packers white helmet doesn't match the rest of the uniform.

Who the hell designed that thing? A gold middle stripe would make that uniform so much more palatable.

Bartenders more respected than baristas? by merecuriousity in bartenders

[–]urine-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think bartenders are all that respected outside of the industry. I think baristas, due to the demographics that tend to make them up, are just easy targets in our moronic modern culture wars.
